This little child lives in a very remote village surrounded by tall desert mountain peaks. As we entered the village and the crowd gathered for Humanitarian Aid she and her friend kept their distance. She was very observant of everything that we did but never came to talk to us.

Children’s early language development includes learning to use and understand lots of individual words. As children develop a larger vocabulary they begin to understand that some words are often used together such as “shoes and socks”. They begin to understand that some words have similar meanings...

Need a refresher on how we got here? Check out these handy charts we created in 2009. From the financial sector’s death grip on our political system to better things we could have done with that bailout money (health care, mortgages, poverty), it’s all there. Can someone send this along to a certain Congressman from Virginia?

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.
Don’t be trapped by dogma -
which is living with the results of other people’s thinking.
And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.
They somehow already know what you truly want to become.
Everything else is secondary.”

Really exciting!!! Good Irene
Irene has started saying her first phrase of more than two words: “Where did it go?”
She seems to enjoy saying it too. Earlier this week, she kept hiding a toy herself so that she could then turn to Maggie, her shoulders shrugged, her arms out, her palms face-up, and say, “Where did it go? Where did it go?”
Six months of hearing with cochlear implants, and we have our first full sentence. Very exciting.

The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) offers this nice overview of cochlear implants, for anyone curious about the devices and trying to find out more about them.
The article covers the following topics:
What Is a cochlear implant?
How does a cochlear implant work?
Who gets cochlear implants?
How does someone receive a cochlear implant?
What does the future hold for cochlear implants?
Where can I get additional information?

The last post looked at different types of questions children learn to answer, moving from concrete to abstract. This post looks at the simplest level of questions which begin to develop in toddlers. Most children are able to consistently respond to this level by the age of three years.
