A Deeper Meaning
On re-reading Harry Potter as an adult, the pages burst with new possible meanings and conclusions which I could not have drawn as a child. I have tried to keep this spoiler free and as most people have now read the books it is unlikely to spoil anything for anyone. None the less, caution ahead.
Finding goodness in others: It is often mentioned, especially in the later books, that Dumbledore is known for always finding the good in people and believing that it is there even when most people would think to the contrary. Looking at this quality as an adult and given Dumbledore’s background I have come to believe that this is partly an acknowledgement of his own dark side and a caution on the part of Joanne Rowling at judging people too quickly.
On a deeper level, this could also be an example of Dumbledore trying to convince himself that there is goodness in everyone in an attempt to find it in himself. As we know, he has been haunted by the events surrounding his sister and also his own actions and thinking at this time in his life. This however is purely speculation.
***SPOILER AHEAD***
While there are many other examples in the series of subtle statements which bely a greater meaning, I am most drawn to Snape’s last words. As he lies on the floor bleeding to death with Harry at his side, he manges to say "Look... at...me...". In his final moments, Snape asks Harry to look at him, so that he can look into Lily’s eyes one last time.
