How did you learn to draw facial expressions so well??? I'm practicing drawing different emotions but so far it's very difficult to do...
honestly just studying manga ive read LOL
at some point you get a better idea of it and can make it more your own by looking at your own face for refs, and just knowing your own ~feelings~
like when drawing emotions, exaggeration helps a lot unless you’re going for more subtle stuff. like think about what it feels like to be happy, sad, angry, etc,
like when i think about feeling angry, i think about grinding teeth, very furrowed eyebrows, the face just pinching and the creases just centering around the middle of the face, like this
i guess think about the flow/direction?? it can help….
lot of it is also redrawing until it looks right lmao
Hi there! Thank you so much! :D Usually when I go about simplifying expressions, I like to start from drawing simple dot eyes and line based expressions before I make the expression more complex. This way I can figure out the base emotion of the expression, and then build upon it when I clean up the thumbnail drawing. In addition, keeping facial features simple will allow for the expression to read more clearly, as well as experimenting with line weight, such as making the pupil darker, and the eyelash a thicker line than the rest of the eye. I highly recommend doing expression studies, where you pause videos and draw different actors’ expressions, and try to simplify or exaggerate the expression vs. drawing the exact expression. I hope this helps, and thank you for the question! :D

Sorry I haven’t been super active! I’ve been really stressed and have been going through a huge transition in my life. Just a couple weeks ago I was going to CCA as usual and got the AMAZING opportunity to take a storyboard test for Disney Television Animation. And I got the job!!! In two weeks I had to move down to LA and get a place and car and wow it was A LOT but so worth it.
Today was my first day and I couldn’t be happier!

Hi I have a question and this been bothering me lately, do you have any tips for fixing art that is leaned (like putting a sketch in the mirror looking leaned).
Yeah this is still something I deal with but the good thing is that its easy to fix once you know the problem
Firstly, stop drawing on a flat surface
when you draw on a flat surface it warps what you see, not every artist has problems with the flat surface thing but its just better in general to not risk it and just draw on a tabletop eseal or just proping up your work.
Heres an example of an image that is warped by your vision at a flat surface
Everything gets stretched out and leaning happens as a result, because your natural artistic abilities will try to correct the distortion, but it actually makes it more distorted.
So have the paper propped up at least 45 degrees.
Finally it comes down to posing, sometimes poses can just be off center, it happens.
So if you work traditionally I recommend investing in a lightbox, flip the image and turn on the lightbox and you will see if its leaning or not. For digital just flip the image.
