Rokurokubi (ろくろ首) — one of the yokai spirits in Japanese folklore. Gained popularity in tales with the start of the Edo period. Ordinary people in general, they have been given an enormously long and flexible neck as a punishment (or on a whim of fate). The neck elongates at night, during a sleep, so some people might even be unaware of themselves being a rokurokubi. The more self-aware and mischievous ones, however, enjoy scaring people or playing pranks of different level of harm. In the morning the only things reminding of demonic metamorphosis are bruises and stretch marks on the neck.
I’ve been asked about it a lot, and finally can say that I might be returning to the folklore series (or mini-series, that is). Japanese this time, as you might have guessed) Same as the slavs in 2014, I would be writing short infos, so feel free to message me if there is a particular yokai you think would be interesting to do)
Higan
Unlike my previous project on slavic mythology, here I’m researching and illustrating the culture to which I do not belong. Therefore, despite checking various sources, I cannot be 100% sure of not making any cultural mistakes either in a discriptions or illustrations. If there are any — please, let me know!)
Autumnal Equinox & Higan (彼岸) is a Buddhist holiday celebrated in Japan in memory of the ancestors. The etymology of Ohigan is from “the other shore of the Sanzu River”, which separates us from the afterlife in Japanese Buddhist tradition. It is believed that during the Higan week the borders of the river are blured. Similar to Obon, Japanese people will often return to their hometowns during the holiday season to pay respects to their ancestors. Higan is a public holiday, thus many businesses are closed.
Today, special services are usually observed in Japanese Buddhist temples, and Japanese temples abroad, based on the particular Buddhist tradition. Aaand I’m late, as always)

Some are dancing, some are giant, some sing, and others rain down: vintage frogs and toads.
Grey Wolf Spiders.
A general name for spiders from several species across multiple genera, these wolf spiders create trapdoor lids for their burrows.
Look very carefully to see the curved door being held by the spider in the top image. The door can clearly be seen in the bottom edge.
These two individuals were found several hundred meters apart.
When open, the spider is out, probably hunting.
When closed, these particular lids were extremely hard to spot. You wouldn’t believe how quickly they can disappear down the hole and close the door.
