“I want to love something. / I want to love something without having to apologize for it. Please don’t tell.”
— Hala Alyan, from “I’m Not Speaking First,” The Twenty-Ninth Year
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, from a letter featured in The Life & Letters of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
i wasn’t looking for this.
i found him between one
good night and a lifetime.
it was a one in a million,
a stroke of luck in a game
of chance where the odds were
always stacked against me.
he made a bad hand
feel like a winning bet.
I always thought love was a wildfire;
blazing and furious, pages filled with flames.
now i know that i was wrong.
you are the peace that comes
with midnight after a long day.
ice cold water under a hot sun.
in the right light i swear
my body has known you in
a hundred different lifetimes and
we find each other in every one.

sunlight rests her golden hand on my cheek,
a blessing,
a reminder,
a glorious nudge towards all of the
warmth she knows i still have inside.
no matter how many times i try, i cannot be cold.
no matter how many times i tried to give it up,
this Leo heart burns for love.
for being held tight,
for the tangled legs in the morning,
for being starlight in all of your darkest rooms.
truth is,
i would put down all of my pride for you.
i am back here on my knees again;
love beats ego every time.
