A quick Cayou before I run off to work!
Making small tweaks to Steen’s design. Most notably he lost the dew claw on his feet. Streamlining!
More recent Steen doodles. I was playing with his face shape a little here. Steen’s become the artistic focal point of the project - everyone else’s design is going to revolve around how he ends up looking.
(Also he’s just super fun to draw.)
Another piece of early art. I was trying to figure out how to handle Steen’s fur.
Of all my older art of the main trio, this sketch is my favorite ♥
Color tests for Cayou! I haven’t 100% decided on her color scheme yet, though at the moment it’s likely to be a variation on #4. I like the soft gray look for her.
Steen and Cayou hanging out. I didn’t have Cayou’s proportions down yet, so her head is absolutely MASSIVE here. Still like the sketch though.
Some of the earliest drawings of Steen. Some notes about his look:
A case of convergent evolution - Steen is basically an alien primate. I based him heavily on capuchin monkeys, with a bit of squirrel (feet) and cat (eyes) thrown in.
If he’s got clothes on, smart money says it will be cargo shorts and one of the five or so tank tops he rotates through. Steen does not have an extensive wardrobe and doesn’t like deviating from his comfort clothes without good reason.
A very early drawing of the boys inspired by this song. Early versions of Rilan and Steen had a lot of ska as a musical theme. I’ve moved away from that but I still like “Hate You” as a mood for them.
The original concept sketches of Rilan and Steen! I had to cut the bottom of the picture off because their mini bios had too many spoilers, but the date at the very bottom says I first drew them 8/20/14. Five years ago. Wild.
Hello and welcome!
This blog is the home of Spinout - a project I’ve had in mind for years, which I’ve decided to finally start putting out into the world!
So what is it exactly?
Spinout is an original sci-fi story about a cast of misfit aliens, found family, and figuring out how to find happiness and peace within a volatile life.
The project will be centered around a plot-driven comic, but I also want it to be semi-interactive. In interludes between chapters, I plan on featuring shorter stories and one-offs, opportunities to ask me and/or the main characters questions, and to show all sorts of behind the scenes art development, writing, etc. Early days will feature a lot of concept art as I nail down exactly how I want things to look. Basically, come and enjoy a story take form!
Spinout takes place in the same universe as a previous story I did called Shades of Gray. (The original site is gone, but you can still read it and access some of the extra content on an archived site a fan was nice enough to make, or read just story on a mirrored site here.)
While part of the Kahmith universe, Spinout will be different from Shades of Gray in a few ways...
First off, I hope to have a more cohesive, professional look to the official comic pages and a more even tempo to the story as it is released in comic book sized chapters. I learned a lot from blindly throwing myself into my first story, and there are things I want to handle differently this time around.
Secondly, Spinout will have a much more adult theme than Shades of Gray did. Partially because Shades of Gray was a story about teens, originally conceived of when I was a teenager. It was about growing up and learning who you are. Spinout, by contrast, is a story I developed as an adult, about adults. The feel of it will be different, and the tone far darker at times.
[CONTENT WARNING]
While I plan on having a lot of domestic fluff, humor, and wholesome moments, Spinout is not for intended for young audiences. Please be aware that the following will be directly shown, mentioned or implied over the course of the story:
Violence, trauma, body horror, and death
Drug and alcohol use/abuse
Struggles with mental illness
Abusive relationships
Sex and prostitution (not planning on showing anything explicit, but it’ll definitely come up pretty often)
Adult language and discussion of some pretty heavy topics
The characters I’ll be working with are flawed people who carry trauma and baggage, and who will only pick up more as the story progresses. However, that’s the point. At its heart, Spinout is meant to be a hopeful story that explores the notion that no matter how badly things have gone, no matter how far you’ve deviated from the life you once planned on living, there’s still room for happiness. There are still things to look forward to, a home to return to, and people who will love you exactly as you are.
I hope you’ll all enjoy going on this journey with me.
It should be one hell of a trip.
