“In One Hundred Years of Solitude, Márquez wrote that we are birthed by our mothers only once, but life obligates us to give birth to ourselves over and over.”
Excerpt From: Erika L. Sánchez. “Lessons on Expulsion.”
Ever since I was a little girl I dreamed of creating an account and verifying my email and enabling 2 step verification and downloading the app and opting out of targeted ads and signing up for promotional newsletters and unsubscribing and unsubscribing and opting out and opting out
Yeah, when I was a kid I couldn't wait to be grown up and in charge of my life. What I had no way of knowing was that adult life is about 87% jack fucking diddly, and the other 13% is shit you have to do or you're going to jail.
Well I'm glad somebody's keeping track because fuck if I remember what I did last summer.
I’ve never related more to a post in my life.
There's a whole demographic of people who are profoundly incurious and just assume everyone else is too, so when they see something unfamiliar they immediately rush to declare that not only have they never heard of it, none of you did either. You're just pretending. You had to look it up, don't lie. You didn't know this
And like, so what if someone had to look something up. That's how you learn new things. People usually say this about knowledge that's pretty damn basic, but I can't get over how they're not only scornful at the idea of people trying to learn something new, they casually assume everyone else is, too
"You didn't know that. Nobody knows that. Stop lying. You looked that up."
Wow, I wish these losers would stop saying that
"Of course I knew that too. I used ChatGPT to summarize -"

If we don't all parent each other how are we supposed to deal with the lack of parenting parents? As it stands we have just been trying to live without parenting and that is clearly not working
you’re an adult?
you are your parent.
if you’re very lucky, I might be your friend, I might be your comrade, I might be your co-conspirator, I might lie and steal and do espionage on your behalf, but I refuse to be your fucking parent.
INTERVIEWER
You have said that writing is a hostile act; I have always wanted to ask you why.
JOAN DIDION
It's hostile in that you're trying to make somebody see something the way you see it, trying to impose your idea, your picture. It's hostile to try to wrench around someone else's mind that way. Quite often you want to tell somebody your dream, your nightmare. Well, nobody wants to hear about someone else's dream, good or bad; nobody wants to walk around with it. The writer is always tricking the reader into listening to the dream.

It's okay to be sleepy a lot. I mean, look at cats. They're sleepy a lot and we love them. We love you too.
“He dug so deeply into her sentiments that in search of interest he found love, because by trying to make her love him he ended up falling in love with her.”
— Gabriel García Márquez, One Hundred Years of Solitude
“I don't know what I think until I write it down.”

your twenties are Also about discovering that you’re not a bad person in all the ways you believed you were but you’re a bad person in completely new and exciting ways
I don't disagree, but your forties are going to be a bigger revelation in this area.
Virginia Woolf, from a letter to Leonard Woolf, featured in The Selected Letters of Virginia Woolf
Many years ago I worked in a call center. That is important only because there are two sets of circumstances in my life in which the word "queue" was a thing, and that's Britcoms and working in a call center. Since not everyone grew up with a family that placed bets on what color Mrs. Slocumbe's hair was going to be on that evening's rerun, many of my coworkers were having their first exposure to "queue".
Not a lot of people know how to pronounce it, but almost everyone knows that they don't know how to pronounce it, and this has comedic value.
Which is why, 24 years later, I can still hear that one guy's singsong voice in my head:
"There are no calls in the kway-way..."
I'm happier when I don't look at Reddit, so I think I'm just going to stop doing that.
I have my queue on my alt set to post once a day, and since I queue things almost constantly, odds are nonzero that that blog will outlive me, and also, it's a fascinating time capsule. Especially when I blog political things.
