Bookcase Building
The Mediatheek Delft designed by Dok Architecten is part of the Hoogoven Building (former blast-furnace building) in Delft, which also houses shops, restaurants and cafes, apartments and bicycle storage sections. The most important materials of the building are glass and ceramics - dark bricks for the ground floor and orange bricks for the upper storeys. The media library is situated on the Cultuurplein (Culture square), embedded in the surrounding buildings. Its entrance is immediately recognizable there by the high glass façade that has been erected two metres in front of the existing frontage. This exposes the media library to the square, with its activities perfectly visible from the outside. The staircases are located behind this glass façade. Thus, a living image is created there, together with the activity on the square at ground level.
JR at the Louvre
JR has chosen the biggest gallery in the world to showcase his art: public spaces. For some ten years now, the artist’s monumental photographic collages have been popping up on the walls of cities in all four corners of the globe. “The most important thing,” he explains, “is where I put my photos and the meaning they take on depending on the place”.Whether it be the Middle East, the favelas of Rio, slums of Kenya, New York, Le Havre or Shanghai,
JR’s works leave no one indifferent, because they return our gaze and cut to the very heart of our innermost selves. His spectacular mode of intervention poses questions about artistic creation, the role of images in the age of globalization, and their widespread use, from intimate circles to mass distribution. Invited by the “biggest museum in the world”—which also generates the most selfies—JR has set his sights on one of the Louvre’s symbols, the Pyramid, which he intends to transform with a surprising anamorphic image.

Sunset Ring of Fire
Photographer Dan McGlaun shot these incredible images of a Annular Eclipse, viewed from Big Spring State Park in western Texas. An annular solar eclipse happens when the Moon covers the Sun’s center, leaving the Sun’s visible outer edges to form a “ring of fire” or annulus around the Moon. In an annular eclipse of the Sun, the Moon casts its antumbra - the outer part of the Moon’s umbra - on the Earth. Like total solar eclipses, annular solar eclipses can be seen as partial eclipses from locations inside its penumbra, but outside it’s antumbra.

Beacons of Information
The library as a closed fortress of knowledge is a thing of the past. New libraries are open beacons of information that promote interaction between the users, integrate new technologies to access information and include confortable reading areas for everyone to enjoy. Most of the library visualizations included in this photo set belong to competitions entries that were not the selected entry, except the last two images of Snøhetta’s Calgary New Central Library, but they all alude to this new library ideal.

Contemporary Bauhaus on the Carmel
A private residence designed by Pitsou Kedem Architects built in the center of a historic avenue and at the very heart of Haifa’s French Carmel neighborhood.
From the architect:
The avenue is studded with a number of residences designed in the Bauhaus style. The Bauhaus style gained its hold in Israel in the wake of international styling trends and is a ornament free design style, both simple and down to earth. The style celebrated the aesthetics of the machine and was characterized by uniformity of color and by unassuming and simple finishes and facades. The style faithfully represented the spirit of the age and the location. This project, designed decades later, creates a line that connects contemporary styling with the spirit of that bygone era.
