The entire point of giving Dean the dog was Dean needed something to believe in. That’s why the dog’s freaking name is Miracle FFS.

I will never not laugh at Sam stans who seem to really not understand why Dean was the writers’ favorite and I love pointing out that were Jared a better actor maybe things would have been different. But you put Jensen and Jared next to each other and to most people the one who shines is Jensen. Them’s just facts.

Every time they publicly whine about how the writers preferred Dean (and Jensen) they just accentuate the fact that Jared wasn’t compelling enough an actor to write the good stuff for.

Also, a lot of it was probably not that he didn't like dogs(please remember one if his "deaths" in Mystery Spot was because he saw a golden retriever and just HAD to go over and pet it) but that he knew their lifestyle didn't really allow for taking proper care of a dog. He was probably worried the dog could get hurt somehow. So he played "tough" on it.

Also even ignoring that explanation, season 3, he loves dogs as seen in his reaction to the golden retriever. Season 4 he's KILLED by Hell Hounds. Season 8 he says no dogs. Season 9 is Dog Dean afternoon. Season 15 he's thrilled to find a dog alive after every other living thing in the world disappears

It would make sense as you all point out as character development that Dog Dean Afternoon helped him rediscover his love of dogs.

He also always liked animals - in season 2 Tall Tales one if Loki's victims was a professor involved in animal experiments and Dean was basically like well he deserved it. In season 3 I think it was with the witches, he was like "why do he rabbits always suffer for it".

Dean actually had a bit of a history of liking animals including dogs.

A few things I need to get out of my head.

Supernatural was only meant to be 5 seasons. The main reason it got to go on for another decade was due to the fans.

Castiel was only meant to be in 3 episodes but due to the fans he was written back in season after season.

Jensen doesn't have the final say on who Dean is, he hasn't even WATCHED the show.

Dean was written by how many different writers? 40? 50? 60? Plus directors adding their 2 cents in and the fans responding to what they do and don't like.

Jensen says his lines in various ways and emotions and the editors cut them out to tell the story. Just because Jensen has told himself a different story of who Dean is that doesn't make it the same story that every writer, director, and editor were trying to tell.

Jensen's a method actor and needs to remember to separate himself from his character. The Dean he knows in his head isn't the same Dean that the writers had in mind, the editors were trying to edit, and the final results of what was shown to the fans on screen.

I mean, after season 5 the show belongs to all of us because we all kept it going past the main story. They were making it up as they went.

So basically I don't care what Jensen's interpretation of Dean is.

However, I'm not a fan of his seemingly flippant attitude and comparing a romantic relationship between non-related best friends and what would be a sexually abusive incestous relationship that fans created to fetishize a couple of hot men.

One ship involves people looking to feel represented and understood and like they're included and normal with everyone else and the other ship fetishizes queer men in the community.

I'm mostly just disappointed because I thought Jensen was learning and growing as a person when it came to this topic. Now it's difficult to watch the show and the bloopers because it feels like they're just making fun of the lgbt community.

Oh well, I guess I'll find something else to be a fan of. Or create something myself. Because guess what Jensen? Tough masculine dudes with a cool car and good taste in music can be bi too.

Jensen Ackles is not Dean Winchester.

The complex dynamic and queer characterization you see in him is so much better and meaningful than the straight bros that created him and to me that is part of what makes all of this so special. It is disappointing to have such a large part of a spn fan base to be repeatedly treated as a stain or embarrassment, but it’s been like this the whole time I have been a fan. I remember being a young queer fan in 2013 and viscerally feeling the taboo nature of destiel and how much they hated people who saw any validity to it. It really was the prime era of fandom/shipping and the creators of these shows did not make light about how much they dismissed and demeaned queer romance while queerbaiting.

This is different to me now that the show has been over for so long and I haven’t entertained any possibility of destiel cannon since years before that. Destiel is the most massive missed opportunity, and is the lighting in a bottle, and created by a world and checkbook of people who wouldn’t have their Man’s Men ever be a fuckin fruit. Despite the canon narrative, despite the homoeroticism dangled like a carrot, despite the same homophobia I too had to navigate as a gay kid in a baptist texas town, I still love it. It’s special to me and so many people and that’s been a phenomena I’ve thoroughly enjoyed.
