Having a polite argument with an internet friend over something finance related. It’s clear he has absolutely no idea what he’s talking about, and knows even less about finance than me. I suggest to drop the topic yet he continues to want to argue. I find this behaviour really baffling. I am trying to avoid an awkward situation in which I directly tell a friend that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I don’t care about esoteric finance theory and it’s certainly not worth creating an awkward situation over, and so I’m giving him an plausibly deniable exit strategy in which he doesn’t have to admit he is wrong, and it’s like for God’s sake just take the exit!
I ask him a finance question in crystal clear plain English and after several attempts he is refusing to answer yet pretending that he has answered. I understand that it’s human nature to not admit such things. What’s weird is, normally if a person is asked a question he doesn’t know the answer to he tries to change the topic to prevent things from being awkward, but after I give up asking the question he wants to keep arguing. Like I am doing you a huge favour by giving you an exit and you are baiting me to directly tell you that you don’t know what you’re talking about, and neither of us want that, and you seem to be oblivious that you’re forcing the conversation onto that track.
This is a pattern I have encountered several times where a person is baiting me to give my honest views on something where I don’t think they’d like my honest views. Like how can you not detect this?

My latest post.
A girl at my work bought me some socks with turtles for my birthday because I had said I liked the turtles in my local park. Is this flirting or am I misreading signals?
Significance is the quality of a state of mind in which we notice that we’re overlooking the significance of the world by our constant quest for it later.
