What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?

It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.

My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂

Lots of well-intentioned (I hope) but extremely condescending comments in the notes like “maybe don’t film yourself doing crime.” Respectfully… This man knew what he was doing. He didn’t just film himself, he invited media to film him. He did this to make his own statement, with his own voice, with his own face. He wanted himself and his actions to be visible.

Collin Kennedy died in 2018, just two years after this video was taken. What would anonymity have achieved for him in those last two years? Avoiding punishment? His whole point was that these parking fees are already a punishment on the sick.

Is public protest dangerous? Sure. Is it more dangerous than merely existing as a sick or disabled person navigating a hostile healthcare system? I think that is for every individual experiencing it to decide for themselves.

Video of Kennedy vandalizing the meter was widely shared on social media. It led to a Canada-wide petition to end the practice of charging for parking near hospitals.

1: wdym "American authors"?? As if authors from anywhere else in the world doesn't want to make money on their craft?

2: pirating is....not.....like it's not ethical to pirate anything and everything? Small creators, new authors, directors who are starting out, etc - if their content is not free you're just stealing from a small business, right? It's not the same as pirating a marvel movie, picking up some extra flour at a grocery chain or stealing clothes from h&m?? Cmon

I wanna start this by saying that i do buy from indie businesses whenever i can.

My two cents is the situation has nuance and most westerners do not consider that. I recently called a guilt tripper for bringing this situation into the attention of someone but eh. Let's try again.

it's different for people who are in global south. One, our economies are decimated and our money compared to dollar worths nothing bc of the westerner colonization and imperialism which every single westerner no matter their political stance or socio-economic class benefit from. This doesn't mean every westerner is guilty of the atrocities of their governments (tho lbr so few of you try to do anything abt it) but you do benefit from that colonization. Those two situations are not divorced from each other. Not to mention that sometimes the platforms to buy stuff are just blocked by regressive governments (which western govts are either responsible from or support). Which means we literally can't buy it even if we want to. You as a small business who sells DIGITAL products will not lose money from people who weren't able to buy your stuff to begin with.

I don't think you people understand what it means to have 300-500 dollars in a *month* and your rent also being that. Someone in that situation cannot pay for 15 dollars for a patreon sub. They will never have that 15 dollars.

So where does this leave us? Should we have only access to mainstream stuff for something that is out of our control and a system that directly benefits you westerners?

Ofc i wish that it wasn't so. Ofc i wanna support people who are creating stuff (and again i do whenever i can) but if you see someone from global south pirating stuff, well. It's not entitlement. And i don't think they should be framed as unethical thieves.
