“Larry” wouldn’t be a thing today if it wasn’t for these people. So this is how relevant they are to their (tinhatted) ship/narrative. Most of the biggest leaders have been around for years, and that’s how they win their legitimacy. Larry is a mutable ideology, because of the constant influx of new people (many people leave too, most of them silently,) so the dynamics created a special need for “reference” (the people that control the narrative/come up with the latest rationalization.) They’re “great” leaders because they’re the paradigm of investment (and entitlement) so they set the standard for the rest (the more vicious they get, the more vicious the rest of the larries become as a group.) They love the drama, they love the attention (that probably don’t get any other way,) they love the role, and they love to think they’re not like any other fan. They think they’re special to Louis and Harry, and in order to perpetuate this feeling they work to lure people in. What you get when you become a Larrie is the feeling that you are a A-type fan. Everyone wants to be special. To tell people that you are not only special, but that you are actually helping Larry to be free, is a very smart strategy. People really fall for this. The issue is that the reason behind the leaders’ intentions is very selfish: to protect the feeling of being special for themselves, and to have this craving mass of people demanding your attention, your dedication. It’s a powerful cocktail of narcissism and self-obsession. The truth in it (how much they believe of their own BS) is secondary. Conspiracy-type behaviors generally end out of boredom, as lacking self-awareness prevent them from criticism and make them virtually immune to anything outside their bubble. This same lack of self-awareness gives them the sense of invincibility they display, even if in the eye of the observer they’re nothing but a stubborn, self-deceited fool. And this is the key to carry on; being able to keep up with the delicate balance of the cognitive dissonance. Being invested, being vicious, being entitled is mandatory to fulfill the role’s requirements. And as with any social situation gone wrong, the actual beliefs are not important. What the leaders are required is to be able to deliver, to perform.
In the end, Larry is external, but the feeling inside, the sense of meaning and the social connections are all what human beings are ready to jeopardize everything for.
