“To make some sense of what you’ve seen.” Multiple deaths in a day, families grieving thru the phone and not seeing their loved ones at their last breath due to this pandemic. Hits home to me. Never in my life I thought I would be in the frontlines. Thank you, Taylor for honoring the unsung heroes.
When I was a little girl, I didn't know why my grandfather was the way he was. He was always apart from us. drinking. alone. One time he called me over while I was playing outside with my cousins in my grandparents house. He never spoke so this was startling. I sat next to him and he began to tell me a story about boats and bullets and having to crawl up a beach. He said if you lifted your head up the bullets would take it off. He said he could only try to bury himself in the sand and he began to dig desperately, he told me. Then he started crying and I was in shock. I had never known a man to cry. But he rocked back and forth and continued...he told me when he was digging he found a rosary in the sand. He cried and showed me a rosary. Then he stayed quiet and stopped talking and just looked and held the rosary as I slunk away from what I thought was a crazy man. I was so little. Now as an adult I understand. He was a Normandy D Day survivor. My mom told me later what it meant. I never knew anything about him but that. I know he stayed there, even if he returned home. I know he lost his mind and heart there. This song brings back my grandfather's memory so vividly. Now I cry too, for his tears were so real, and that's all I ever knew of him.
I can’t believe I get to work with Aaron Dessner. When Aaron came into my life, I was ushered into his world of free-flowing creativity where you don’t overthink, you just make music. His generosity of spirit and humility bleeds into every part of his life, and that’s why so many artists have jumped at the chance to be a part of his collaborative project, Big Red Machine. A song we wrote (which also features ⚡️Justin Vernon✨) is out today! It’s called Renegade. Thanks Aaron for asking me to show up at your party. bigredmachine.jagjag.co/renegade

Ive been working on the final test tomorrow hope it work out
You call me back and I say Yes
I’ve always said that the world is a different place for the heartbroken. It moves on a different axis, at a different speed. Time skips backwards and forwards fleetingly. The heartbroken might go through thousands of micro-emotions a day trying to figure out how to get through it without picking up the phone to hear that old familiar voice. In the land of heartbreak, moments of strength, independence, and devil-may-care rebellion are intricately woven together with grief, paralyzing vulnerability and hopelessness. Imagining your future might always take you on a detour back to the past. And this is all to say, that the next album I’ll be releasing is my version of Red.
Musically and lyrically, Red resembled a heartbroken person. It was all over the place, a fractured mosaic of feelings that somehow all fit together in the end. Happy, free, confused, lonely, devastated, euphoric, wild, and tortured by memories past. Like trying on pieces of a new life, I went into the studio and experimented with different sounds and collaborators. And I’m not sure if it was pouring my thoughts into this album, hearing thousands of your voices sing the lyrics back to me in passionate solidarity, or if it was simply time, but something was healed along the way.
Sometimes you need to talk it over (over and over and over) for it to ever really be… over. Like your friend who calls you in the middle of the night going on and on about their ex, I just couldn’t stop writing. This will be the first time you hear all 30 songs that were meant to go on Red. And hey, one of them is even ten minutes long.
Red (Taylor’s Version) will be out November 19.
