And it’s been five years, but your voice hadn’t changed one bit. When you spoke, I remembered what it was like to be in love with you and I missed it. I missed us.

brooks.
his leg was shaking up and down, up and down— again and again. he felt the urge to do something while he waited for the news behind the door his eyes were currently fixed on. brooks has been here before; nearly seven years ago now. in some ways, his broadened experience and added perspective on life soothes his nerves. in other ways, it only rattles them further. there were a thousand worries that raced through his head when he first heard her say it, some of which seem to be greeting him again. he tuned them out once more after a minute that felt like an eternity passed. instead, he focused on the dull hum of their air conditioner and the sound of the dogs playing in the other room. when the door cracks, it drew him out of his reverie abruptly, nearly startling him. “ what does it say? ”
“ it says that our lives are ruined. ” always one for the dramatics and the unreasonable, mattie is quick to exit the suffocating space of their bathroom, left hand simultaneously tugging on brunette locks as her free palm pushes the door closed with more force than intended. “ sorry, i --- ” what was she supposed to say ? the girl rarely apologised for anything in her life, but the stick in her hand, that seemed to weigh more than life itself, had her running through a rollercoaster of emotions. “ i didn’t mean that. ” it was very possible that she did. one foot in front of the other, mattie moved quickly to take hold of her fiancé’s hands, leading the pair over to the bed before sitting on the edge and patting the space beside her. the test that still had a few minutes to wait before dictating their future was placed out of sight on the bedside cabinet. “ what do you want it to say ? i’m sorry, ” again, with more apologies than spoken in her twenty-three year years of life, “ i know this must be hard for you. i don’t know how it happened. ” she considers making a rather distasteful joke about their exhaustive sex life, but decides from the look on the features she loved so deeply it wasn’t the time. “ be honest with me. ”

staring at the person in the doorway of his home was not the most rewarding start to his tuesday morning. why their mom’s were friends is beyond him, especially since the two of them were at each other’s throat every time their families hung out together. exhaustion was evident on his face as he felt the arm of his father wrap around his shoulders, nose scrunching in frustration. “ great. just great. ” his father bumps his arm, a grunt leaving his lips at the small tap. “ i’ll take your stuff to your room then. . . ”
a total cliché, she thought. the one about karma having its kiss for her ? yeah, that one. in fact, karma and belle might as well be on the back of a space truck having a make out session. she’d offered her mom various options for home arrangements, tried everything in her power to get out living with her very own, ever so dramatically, sworn enemy. the only person on this planet that had the knowledge to strip belle of her ‘daddy’s little angel’ title. “ its not anywhere near yours, is it ? ” the brunette is quick to respond, eyes rolling in the disbelief that he couldn’t possibly be more miserable than she was. a sharp pinch on the back of her arm was enough of a warning from her mother, a pain startling enough to make her walk after the boy with haste. “ i mean, yeah, thank you. ” and at a much lower volume, “ --- but, really, i better not have to see your face first thing in a morning. stress isn’t good for my complexion. ”
our moms are best friends but despite their protests, we can’t stand each other. you are literally the worst person i’ve ever met and you’re lucky i don’t tell mommy about the shit you do once she goes to bed and you sneak out the window. but look, my house completely flooded and there’s no chance of us fixing it anytime soon, so now my mom and i are moving into the guest rooms at your house. this is going to be absolutely terrible.
bonus points for : accidental walk ins while ones in the shower, fighting over the last croissant at breakfast, bickering at dinner, just general nuisances that only further drive tension
