they are called COMPLEX CHARACTERS. FOR A REASON. every character we’ve been introduced to in motm has depth as to what they do, why they do it, and how it’s going to affect themselves, the story, and the other characters around them.
i am not holding anyone’s hand when i say this because it's the truth: media literacy is dying and some people cannot handle complexity because they don’t want to take that time to dissect it and figure out that puzzle for themselves. 21% PERCENT OF ADULTS IN THE US ARE ILLITERATE AS OF 2024 AND ITS ONLY BEEN GOING UP SINCE. especially in an era where it’s encouraged to just consume content at face value without second thought. it’s easier to digest so why spend the effort trying to figure it out? but because of that, we’re never given the chance to ask the questions:
what, when, where, why, and how.
one of the biggest examples i can think of is when folks in the fandom were SO quick to switch up on bendy the MOMENT he separated the train car with dyle in it without taking a moment to really consider the situation he’s been fighting before and during the current narrative. and then started to blame CUPHEAD for BENDY’S OWN DECISION???? THAT HE WILLINGLY MADE WITHOUT OUTSIDE INFLUENCE????
it’s literally the “why did chara make us do this” debate all over again.
AND THE WHOLE BLATANT MISCHARACTERIZATION OF CUPHEAD’S CHARACTER AS A WHOLE?? I GET IT— A LOT OF INTERPRETATIONS OF CUPHEAD IN ALTERNATE UNIVERSES HAVE PORTRAYED HIM AS A COCKY, ARROGANT, LIL PLAYBOY BASTARD AND THAT ISNT AN INCORRECT WAY TO WRITE HIM BECAUSE THAT’S THE ARTISTS OWN INTERPRETATION OF HOW THEY SEE AND WANT TO WRITE HIS CHARACTER. BUT THAT BECOMES A PROBLEM ONCE FANS START PROJECTING THAT OTHER EXPECTATION ONTO OTHER ARTISTS WHO WANT TO WRITE HIM DIFFERENTLY. IT IS UNFAIR TO THE ARTISTS WHO PRESENT A PRODUCT THAT TAKES A UNIQUE PORTRAYAL ON A CHARACTER TO HAVE A FANBASE WHO WILL NOT BE SATISFIED BECAUSE THEIR EXPECTATIONS OF WHAT THEY THOUGHT WAS “THE STANDARD” WASN’T MET.
fanon writings of characters has been around FOREVER and will likely never not be a prominent part of fandom culture. everybody has their own interpretations of how they see a piece of media and that’s just how it’s gonna be. im not here to tell you what to think, how to think it, etc. it is ultimately up to YOU to do the critical thinking for yourself. but im also not gonna tell you you’re a terrible person/you’re incorrect for thinking the way you are. but it's ultimately not fair to other artists to come in with that expectation and isn't fair to yourself either by dumbing down a character to their most simplistic traits just so they're easier to digest.
tldr: brush up on your media literacy and take time to dissect things further. exercise that little fleshy thing in your skull and it’ll be happy and reward you with dopamine.
be cringe, be free, but don't take things at face value.
I loved her first outfit, but I didn't really like the way it was looking and decided to look up some better references and re work her outfit. Here are somethings I changed up about her design and the things I kept:
Things I changed-
I decided to change her dress up completely, I didn't like the layered look so I reworked it into just a single skirt
I decided to give her some red cowgirl boots because in my first design, I was scared that I wasn't showing off that she's a sheep. So I wanted to show off as much of her wool as possible. But I think it just made her feel incomplete as a cowgirl, so I just decided to give her red boots.
I replaced the cow print patches with the stars near the hem of her skirt. I thought the patches looked too closely to Ragatha's and I didn't want them to look the same in that manner.
I thought the dress would be plain if it was just the blue dress with the golden yellow accents, so I added the red vest with the golden yellow to make the outfit stand out a bit more
Things I kept the same-
I kept her color palette the same. I didn't want to change it because I really liked the colors of her when I first picked them out in the first draft.
I kept her whole design the same, she was inspired off of Elnina from Deltarune. I had always thought that Elnina looked a little bit like a sheep, so I took that idea and ran with it for Lulu
I do not "render." I do not "shade." I do not "paint," I do not "detail" and i do not draw "Backgrounds." I draw BLAND CHARACTERS standing in WHITE VOIDS And if it doesn't look good i GIVE UP.

My TADC OC! Her name is Lulu and she's a sheep cowgirl!
I wanted to make a TADC OC for a while now and I've finally had the time to sit down and put my ideas to iPad. She's got a cute country accent and she smells like fresh dirt! She's a hard working gal... maybe sometimes a little too hard working.. but she still makes time for her friends and loves them to death!
