I recently learned that there is a restaurant/coffee shop that has Zutara fanart as decoration. Unfortunately I don't know where it's supposed to be located
Katara's type
Someone handsome and tall
"someone to lean on"
"I didn't even have to convince him of how important it is!"
"I didn't even have to convince him of how important it is!"
"I didn't even have to convince him of how important it is!"
Zuko trying to make his partner understand that there are more important things to worry about than their relationship
"a special connection"
Adding on because I love this
taking it seriously/being responsible, didn't have to convince him how important it is
someone to lean on/special connection
The sheer amount of cognitive dissonance in Kat/aang logic is honestly baffling.
People who don't like Ka/taang: A.ang isn't mature enough to be in a romantic relationship with Katara.
Ka/taangers: Actually, A.ang is really mature for his age, he's even more mature than both Katara and Zuko.
People who don't like Ka/taang: *brings up The Ember Island Players episode, the time A.ang lied to Katara to go do scams with Toph and Sokka when she told them not to, the time he risked the lives of millions of people just so he could preserve his own moral purity until he was bailed out by the plot and every other act of immaturity*
Ka/taangers: Cut A.ang some slack, he's just a 12 year old kid who doesn't know any better.
People who don't like Ka/taang: So...is he a 12 year old kid who doesn't know any better or is he mature for his age to the the point of surpassing both Katara and Zuko?
Or my personal favorite
People who don't like Ka/taang: A.ang isn't a healthy partner for Katara.
Ka/taangers: You guys didn't pay attention to the show, A.ang is the best romantic option for Katara and waaay healthier for her than toxic Zuko.
People who don't like Ka/taang: *points out how A.ang turned out to be a neglectful dad to 2 of his 3 kids while Zuko turned out to be a great dad*
Kat/aangers: You don't get it, it's not A.ang's fault. He's the Avatar so he has to travel a lot and he has the burden of passing down his culture to Tenzin so it doesn't die with him. Plus, he was raised by monks, so it makes sense that he doesn't know how to really be a dad.
People who don't like Ka/taang: Let me get this straight, you think that a guy whose job requires him to travel constantly, is preoccupied with the task of preserving his own culture and isn't capable of being a good dad because he was raised by monks is the best and healthiest romantic option for Katara, you know, the girl who was parentified at 8 years old and has abandonment issues?

Zutara MBTI Theory: How Zuko And Katara Are Psychologically Tui and La
As a Zutara shipper, I've always struggled to explain the spark in Zuko and Katara's relationship. If I wanted to simplify it, I'd just call it a vibe. I really couldn't articulate what about their dynamic was so special or fascinating. One day, I decided to look into their personality types, out of curiosity, and I think I get it now.
Zuko and Katara's personality types
Zuko's personality type is ISFP and Katara's is ESFJ. I went through enough websites and articles to feel comfortable about this typing, but I'm not going to break down their types because others have already done it. You can find Katara's here and here, and Zuko's, here, and here.
Description of Tui And La
I'm going to just focus on two main characteristics of Tui and La for this post;
1. Their nature - mirror reflections to each other
2. Their relationship - push and pull
The Nature of Tui And La - Mirroring
A mirror shows you the inverted version of your image, left is right and right is left. It's still you but in reverse, Tui and La embody this both cosmically and visually.
Cosmically/symbolically, they possess the opposite but complementary quality in the other.
Tui is pull, La is push
Tui is still, La is motion
Tui is yin, La is Yang
Tui is calm, La is wild
Visually, they are inverted versions of each other. Tui's koi fish form is white with a black spot and La's koi fish form is black with a white spot
On first looking at Zuko and Katara's personality types, there seems to be nothing special, that is, until you look at their function stacks
Zuko's function stack
Fi - Dominant function
Se - Auxiliary function
Ni - Tertiary function
Te - Inferior function
Katara's function stack
Fe - Dominant function
Si - Auxiliary function
Ne - Tertiary function
Ti - Inferior function
Zuko and Katara have the exact same function stack but different orientation. Every function that is introverted in Zuko is extroverted in Katara and every function that's introverted in Katara is extroverted in Zuko.
If Katara looks into a mirror, she doesn't see another Katara, she sees Zuko, and vice versa. They are the mirrored versions of each other, two sides of the same coin, two halves of the same truth, two orientations of the same psychology, opposite but complementary, Tui and La.
The Relationship Of Tui And La - Push and Pull
In ATLA, Tui and La's relationship is described as one of push and pull, always circling each other in an eternal dance.
Something Zuko and Katara sometimes do is display the behaviors of each other's dominant functions.
Zuko's dominant function is Fi (introverted feeling). Fi focuses on internal and subjective values. It manifests in a person as authenticity, focus on one's inner emotional world and self expression. It's feeling oriented inward.
Katara's dominant function is Fe (extroverted feeling). Fe focuses on group values and social harmony. It manifests in a person as prioritizing other people's emotional needs, emotional support and emotional connectivity. It's feeling oriented outward.
In the Crossroads Of Destiny, Katara and Zuko are imprisoned together in the crystal catacombs. As soon as they have their first non-war-combatant interaction with each other, they display the behaviors of each other's dominant functions.
Katara pays no attention to Zuko's emotional needs. She focuses on her own inner emotional world without caring about emotionally supporting Zuko, connecting or maintaining social harmony with him. She instead expresses all her anger, frustration and pain to the point of breaking down in tears. This is Fi behavior.
Katara: [Enraged.] I don't? How dare you! You have no idea what this war has put me through! [Sits down.] Me personally! [She sits down and touches her necklace, begins to cry.] The Fire Nation took my mother away from me.
Zuko then responds in a way that surprised me the first time I watched this episode. He remains calm, patient and quietly listens to her. He interjects once firmly but not aggressively. When she starts crying, he tries to offer comfort and sympathy, then reaches out to connect with her and empathize by being vulnerable. He's even the first one to open up his body language in this scene, to Katara. This is Fe behavior.
Zuko: [He turns around to face Katara.] I'm sorry. [Pauses. Katara is now sobbing.] That's something we have in common.
Katara then calms down and starts prioritizing Zuko's emotional needs, being sympathetic, listening to him and even offering to heal his scar(Fe behavior). Zuko then starts focusing on his feelings, shows self consciousness about his scar and talks about what he feels about it (Fi behavior).
Katara: [Apologetic.] I'm sorry I yelled at you before.
Zuko: My face? I see. [He touches his scar.]. Katara: No, no, that's-that's not what I mean.
To put it into more visual terms, Katara pulled inward (Fi), Zuko pushed outward (Fe), then Katara pushed back out (Fe) and Zuko pulled back in (Fi). (Seriously, can you get a more perfect ship than this?!)
They switched roles, Katara is usually the one in Zuko's position, she sympathizes, she reaches out first, she empathizes first; but instead, Zuko reaches out first, he empathizes first. And Zuko is usually in Katara's position while Uncle Iroh tries to help him. It's not the inverse expressions of their functions that got me, it's the fact that they did it at the same time.
They do this again in The Southern Raiders. Katara pulls inward again (Fi), her only focus throughout the entire episode is her own inner emotional world and nothing else, while Zuko pushes outward again (Fe), he spends the entire episode focusing on Katara's emotional well-being.
This is even visually represented with how Katara walks away to isolate herself (pull) and Zuko goes after her (push). They circle each other, always pushing and pulling. This is why I think Zuko and Katara are psychologically Tui and La.
Bonus: This isn't that important but I just noticed that their eye colors match their personality types.
Double bonus: Here's a tiktok edit about them being Tui and La. for your viewing pleasure
I wish I could do their other functions but we didn't really get enough episodes. I'm not sure if this analysis is a stretch or if it actually made sense, either way I just wanted to share it.
Ugh.
Just need to rant.
I recently read an incredible Zutara fic. Truly beautifully written, sweet, slow burn, full of tension and care.
I was completely invested. And then, in the last chapter(s), Zuko marries Mai. It was heartbreaking for everyone involved and it honestly left me feeling annoyed and upset. Part of that is the whiplash. The tone shifted abruptly, and there was no clear tagging or warning that this was where the story was headed. I went in expecting a Zutara story and ended up reading something closer to a tragedy dressed up as realism.
And that sent me down a spiral of why this bothered me so much. On the surface, I understand the argument.
A realistic political landscape after the war. A Fire Lord bound by duty. Nobility, expectations, alliances. I get it. I respect that some writers want to explore that angle.
But that is not why I am here. I am not reading Zutara fic for political realism. I am here for Zutara emotional payoff, mutual growth, and the idea that choosing love is part of building a better world.
And the more I thought about it, the more I realized the real issue was not just that Zutara did not end up together. It was how Zuko’s character was handled, in this fanfiction and in canon.
Zuko is constantly held up as one of the best redemption arcs in fiction, and for good reason. Entire YouTube essays dissect his growth, his unlearning of abuse, his rejection of toxic expectations, his choice to be better than the Fire Nation that raised him. His arc is sometimes argued to be stronger and more emotionally complex than even Aang’s (which I believe it is).
So why, at the end of so many stories both in canon adjacent fic and in the show itself does that growth get quietly undone? That's when it clicked for me. What upsets me is not just the ship. It is that Zuko’s growth is often reverted in order to make a bad ship sail.
Mai as a character is not entirely at fault here. In fact, I don't think the writers gave her much thought at all beyond girl Zuko dates + Azula talented accomplice. What we are shown of her is someone who is emotionally closed off, disengaged, and largely indifferent to the suffering around her. She does not care about the war, does not care about politics, does not care about people, and often does not even seem to care much about Zuko unless you squint.
This is complete contradiction to EVERYTHING we've been shown over 3 seasons, that Zuko cares deeply for.
People often point to Mai saving Zuko at the Boiling Rock as proof of deep love. And yes, she saves the person she loves, even after he hurt her. But that moment alone is doing a lot of heavy lifting for a relationship that otherwise lacks shared growth. What’s missing for me is any indication that this choice reflects a broader shift in her values. The Boiling Rock presented a clear opportunity to show that. Her uncle was the prison warden, a direct embodiment of Fire Nation cruelty and unquestioned authority. We could have seen Mai forced to confront that system through him. A parallel could have been drawn between her relationship with her uncle and Zuko’s relationship with Iroh, showing her beginning to question Fire Nation ideology rather than simply rebelling for one person.
Even a small moment would have mattered. Watching her see the cruelty of the prison, having Zuko call it out, and allowing that to spark an uncomfortable realization would have gone a long way toward demonstrating real character growth. It would not have needed to be dramatic. Fandom has proven that sometimes all it takes is a single line, a shared moment of recognition, to build an entire emotional arc.
*Cough* That's something we have in common *cough*
Zuko’s entire arc is about learning empathy, compassion, and accountability. It is about choosing people who challenge him to be better and who reflect the values he has grown into.
Mai saving Zuko does not erase the fact that she shows little care for the wider consequences of his choices, his trauma, or the world he is now responsible for leading in. And crucially, she does not share his growth. That's why this pairing and endings like this feel so wrong to me.
They do not just deny Zutara. They deny Zuko the natural conclusion of his arc.
They lock him back into the very structure he fought so hard to change. Obligation without joy, duty without healing, power without partnership.
And honestly as a Zutara shipper I would rather Zuko end up with anyone EXCEPT Mai. Because ending up with Mai is not neutral. It actively undermines the story the show spent three seasons telling us about who Zuko became.
Which now that I think about it, all those video essays about Zuko's growth rarely mention Mai/Maiko, because it's not really relevant to Zuko as a character.
What is mentioned and what is relevant, is Zuko doing everything he can to earn other's forgiveness and trust. Especially Katara after he hurt her.
Endings that sacrifice Zutara because it's unrealistic have ignored everything the show has presented up until the last 10 minutes. It's harder to read in fics exclusively tagged Zuko/Katara, spend thousands of words bringing these two characters together, and then give them the same treatment as canon.
Zuko is a person who doesn't give up even with all the odds stacked against him. Katara is somebody who is willing to do anything it takes to achieve her goals, be it finding a waterbending master or ending a war that seems all but lost. A Zuko who grows, heals and then willingly steps back into emotional emptiness for the sake of optics is the part I cannot accept.
Finally, it's done! After years of saying I wanted to draw Zutara, I finished this artpiece! I really was not satisfied with so many things and the lack of times with work and my studies didn't let me end this sooner. It's ok, tho. I wanted to complete this as my own challenge. Hope you like it!
I collected some WIP screenshots I was sharing with my friends in these years so you can see a small art process.
ZUTARA FOREVER!
ZUTARA
Ship so good, I don't even know if I should be sad they never got together or I should be glad they never got together (cz bryke hate them, plus they were so bad at writing romance)
you never realize how many pictures are on Tumblr until your internet is bad
Reblog if you will never. Ever. Use AI in your writing.
Anti-Zutarians will say “oh I prefer them as friends” and then go back to acting like they never became friends at all.
if i had a dick i would love to have a disappointing orgasm in the shower while thinking of something or someone that i felt i should not be thinking about & then stand under the water with my forehead against a wall watching the proof of my guilt & shame go down the drain
'katara was never canonically into zuko, so therefore, i HAVE to go with kataang - ' first of all, we as the audience have no clue how katara feels about her relationship with aang other than one dance scene right after a scene where she fakes being his pregnant mother, a kiss sprung on her after she expressed confusion with barely explanation, and legitimately treats aang the same way she does a baby, combined with the show making joke after joke about them having a mother-son dynamic
the cherry on top? the directors were aware that her 'normal' animation model would look extremely inappropriate in romantic scenes with aang, so they had to make a younger-looking model so that it doesn't look like a mom interacting inappropriately with her son. i need someone to draw katara's model from the southern raiders in her kiss scenes with aang
like if you want to sell me on the idea that katara was into aang at all, there needs to be a lot more than one moment in season 1 with the fortuneteller's theme getting undermined by katara being welded to destiny, the surprise kiss that should have ended with katara smiling if bryke didn't want me to want to take a hammer to kataang, and not even talking to aang about their relationship after the disasterclass that was ember island players
i don't care if the show canonically played with zutara or not. i saw the parallels, themes, and chemistry. not my problem that kataang couldn't actively give katara agency
Zuko and Katara have zero chemistry at all!
Zuko and Katara are so sibling coded!
Zuko and Katara are filled with so much hate and try to kill each other!
Zuko and Katara (fire and water) don't mix well and will not get along!
Zuko and Katara are just acquaintances until the end of the show
Just got a chatgpt ad where the use case was "can't decide a new years resolution". I can't think of anything more sad than needing a robot to tell you what your own ambitions are. Loser shit.
