Okay so quick note: I ate some of my words from late last year when I first started talking about sims 4 related stuff, and have ended up playing the Sims 4 again, I must've just not been comfortable playing the game while the buyout was such a hot topic and not just like another thing we have headaches about. I'm not exactly sure if this warrants an apology but I am sorry since I said it was related to reasons beyond the sims 4 as a game. In all devil's advocate, I'm 90% sure that play time alone doesn't give money to EA soooo, I don't think EA has made any money off me specifically. Also my own instructions didn't say anything about not playing the game anymore, just not spending anymore money on it.
However I've stayed true to my own instructions and haven't bought any packs or given any money to creators I know are EA partners, and I still implore you to continue to do the same.
Someone tell me why EA has decided to add virtual currency to the game that you can only get via purchase?! And for custom content, one of the most affordable (or free if you're patient and/or don't go through creators that do early access) things in the whole culture of the game?! I get that the answer is money but W H Y?!
For anyone who doesn't play the sims 4 with mods and hasn't really heard about the sometimes trainwreck that is the sims 4 modding scene, here's why this is bullshit:
The official policy, FROM EA, is that if you decide to paywall any mod, including custom content, you have to release it for anyone to download after three weeks (you can definitely make it released for everyone earlier though), and you cannot permapaywall something. There is a thing such as taking commissions (Simandy for example), but even those are released for everyone, not just the commissioner. Because you cannot get the virtual currency to get custom content on the (I'm assuming, I live under a rock) upcoming sims 4 marketplace in any way for free, this means any content on there that isn't available anywhere else is now permanently paywalled and in violation of EA's own policy.
People making stuff for the marketplace only get 30% of the money coins you pay for to use on that creator's content (assuming I'm understanding correctly). At least if you pay for early access to custom content on a person's patreon (which I don't do because I have a bad enough sleep schedule that 1-3 weeks isn't that long for me, and even if I didn't sims 4 mods aren't really something I see as needing fastpass for), the motherfucker gets the money from that subscription and anyone else's subscriptions, and I believe patreon takes way less of a fee than 70% and most of the materials needed to make sims 4 custom content are either free (sims 4 studio, blender, patterns and images for textures) or would already be owned by the creator (the sims 4 and packs). So I really don't get this as a good deal even if you do have any kind of paywall for mods you've made.
C: Everybody already either looks on patreon, Tumblr, The Sims Resource, or Pinterest for mods and custom content, myself included. So uhhh, aside from people who have never modded the game before, which there are already numerous written and video instructions for, this is almost useless except as a notifications thing.
D: Assuming this is trying to break into the nostalgia market more, who in their right mind said the sims 3 STORE was the best part of the game?! Like there are so many things you could've done that would've been way less useless in my eyes and still try to tap into the nostalgia market (2014 branding considering everyone is somehow nostalgic for 2016, branding like the sims 3, the sims 3 sale that is CURRENTLY HAPPENING, putting the sims 2 and 1 rereleases on sale, making a stuff pack or better yet base game update full of stuff from the older games).
Needless to say, I still won't be buying anything out of EA, and would rather wait three weeks than trade money for coins I can't even physically hold.
Also if I have something disastrously wrong, please tell me, I just- WHY?! WHAT DOES THIS DO FOR ANYBODY?!
(It is 1:58 am when I finished writing this and I'm downloading custom content rn.)
