Quick emotional sketches
Art therapy doesn’t have to take long. 10-20 minutes per day can be enough. Doodles on your page can be enough. It’s about utilising art to create an understanding of emotions.
Dark and stormy, under the weather, frightened and static…. Think about what your feeling in the moment. What colours/ lines feel like a correct representation of that feeling to you?
Does it resemble something, or someone? Or perhaps it resembles nothing at all….
Art book doodles to deal with emotions
Using colour
For so long I became obsessed with black and white. Sticking to basic pens and black and white print. Colour was a scary concept.
Something I discovered is the way I can utilise colour to express and feeling. Colour… no matter how crazy or all over the place it was… gave me interest in the thing I was creating. It was another layer of expressionism.
I bought pens and pencils. And instead of thinking hard about techniques I just went for whatever came to mind. It’s a freeing experience.
I took things around me that I thought about often, things surrounding my environment that peaked my interest. It was an investigation into myself through my surrounds.
Colour in terms of art therapy is fantastic. Sometimes you don’t feel like drawing a particular thing. Sometimes what you want to express can not be shown through a physical item or picture. And that’s where colour comes in. Watercolour, scribbling pens and pencils, chaos…. These are ways we can express how we feel without the pressure of it making any sense.
If you are stressed get some markers, watercolours or pencils and just scribble. Scribble all over the page. The best part of art is layering. So if you want to add something to it later.. you can. Something to make sense of this Chaos. Or not. 🌞
One of my first digital sketches from back in the day!
Hi! I’m Sqwigggs!
I’m a learning art teacher, teaching and helping people (from 5 to 35) utilise art and creative practises to make connections with themselves and discover what’s important to them, as well as tackling today’s prominent issues of depression, anxiety, chronic illness etc.
I fell in love with art therapy in high school, recognising how people have been using art to enhance their understanding of self and others since we were young children.
The most amazing part of art therapy is the beautiful understanding that THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS “GOOD” or “BAD”. That’s not what it is about! And it is absolutely freeing knowing you have no obligation to share your creations with anyone else!
The reason I share my personal experiences and the simple works that I create is because I love people to understand the benefits of keeping an art journal. The liberation of not having to conform, just express.
I studied art before changing my degree to psychology… so I can continue to build on my knowledge and expand my techniques in this field.

Shoot me a message! I’d love to meet new people and I’m new here so it’s a little daunting.
