Public Relations Program

We are at the end of the program and once this class is complete then I will be officially finished with my public relation master’s program. Wow, I can’t believe that I will be receiving my master’s degree. This is a very special moment for me and I couldn’t have done it without my family and my husband’s family support. This was not an easy year. A lot has happened and I’m glad that I stuck with completing what I started. Maybe I will take a year off and then go back to school to get my Ph.D. I always wanted to be called a Doctor.

What can I say about my final public relations course. Well, it focused on me completing my capstone campaign project, allowing me to put the finishing touches on a detailed public relations plan. I thought the course would be too overwhelming, but I was completing wrong. This 12-month program gave me a true understanding on what it takes to produce a well design website, a well thought out plan to represent a client and/or brand in the PR world, and how to increase the exposure for that client and/or brand. Looking back on all the classes I have taken, shows that I have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge. Teaching me how to become a success PR representative, whether at an already established PR firm or a PR firm that I am establishing with my significant other and business partner.

Well this is the last entry for my master journal and I truly want to thank everyone that helped me on this journey in my life. This was a big step and hopefully I keep pushing myself to do more and continue on to do great things. Now on to crossing that stage and getting my master’s degree. I am so freaking excited…

Online Media Room Course

Honestly, it was great to learn how to develop, integrate, and manage an online media asset for my capstone client. This course taught me how traditional media rooms are the hub of an organization media outreach and engagement efforts to the client. Reporters and bloggers are typically first to visit a company’s online newsroom when developing a story about an organization or brand.

A first-rate online newsroom containing content that journalist seek opens the door to major media mentions. Yet many organizations treat their online newsroom as a dumping ground for old press releases, frustrating time pressed reporters and bloggers. Through research from this course, I learned how many viewers prefer videos over text. Which was great to know before creating my newsroom for my capstone client. On my webpage I created unique and interesting graphics and photography to illustrate news announcements and products. Including high resolution images for downloading, including images of executive and spokespersons, and the company logo.

This course gave me insight to the fact that online newsroom offers a potent tool to win media attention and promote the brand’s messages directly to an audience. The best media centers employ brand journalism to create content that feels more like objective reporting than corporate marketing jargon. The common practice of merely posting press releases is likely to flop. Overall, I thought it was a great course that I needed to take for my master’s program in public relations.

Reputation Management Strategy Course

This course was not what I expected. I thought this course would cover issues stemmed around managing the reputation of an organization and/or company. I was so wrong. This course focused on how to manage a company’s reputation strategically in communication while in a crisis and stakeholder engagement. I gained the knowledge of how to create and develop a crisis communication plan and team. Identifying and assigning roles and responsibilities to the right individual in the company. Examining options on how to defend and repair a company’s and/or organization reputation from possible inaccurate information in the press, misinformation, and possible critics on the web. Translating this information into effective planning and decision making, on ways to save the face of the business during a crisis. If that wasn’t enough, this course introduced me to what a dark web page was and how to use it. Explaining how important it is to have everything in order before a crisis or emergency situation happens. Being prepared and ready for anything to happen is what can save the face of any company and/or organization.

It felt like it was a lot of information, but it really wasn’t. The course provided a clear overview of key concepts involved in managing and developing organizational communication and reputation. Overall, I felt this course gave me insight into what to expect for the future when representing clients in the PR industry. When looking at the job description of a PR representative, it involves gaining understanding and support for your clients, as well as trying to influence opinions and behaviors. Using all forms of media and communication to build, maintain and manage the reputation of the client. So, I must say I’m on the right track and I’m glad that this was one course I needed to complete for my PR master’s program.

Event Marketing & Production Course

This was a fantastic course about how to create a successful event with public and digital media. It covered important issues like how to price an event, how to promote an event, different ways in which you can make money from the event you create and much more. The event industry seems to change day by day and public relations professional work so hard to obtain publicity for their client. From crafting a traditional press release resembling a compelling news story, to creating a marketing event, making it clear why the client’s product or service is so important. PR professionals often create thematic events to stir interest and to generate some form of a buzz. Event Marketing and Production course taught me that the best way to create events is with the use of digital media, which plays a critical role in ensuring that events are well publicized and organized. In general, clients want their events to reflect on the latest trends and styles and exploring the role of public and digital events brings awareness to the client and or company that the PR professionals represent. I used to think to make an event successful you needed a big advertising budget or the use of a celebrity endorsement but that is completely incorrect. It’s shocking but I took so much from this course to maybe become a good or even successful PR professional. When I started my master’s program in Public Relations I had one client that I was working with to build their brand for my capstone project, now I have three more clients that I am working to build their brand. This was one class I needed to take and I am happy about what I learned from Event Marketing and Production.

Media Relations Course

This course gave me the solid grasp on the foundations of traditional public relations methods, while also introducing ways to plan, research and execute effective media strategies. Understanding that media relations involves so many strategic ways to inform the public of an organizations mission, policies, and practices in a positive, consistent and credible manner-- made me think about my career as a PR representative. I was not planning on completing an internship program for public relations. But after completing a couple assignments, I think it’s in my best interest. I think I need to have hands on experience with a PR company, so I am able to see how PR representatives become successful within this field. Exploring the concept that a public relations professional must understand the media community as well as learn how to engage with the media in a professional manner to achieve their public relations goals. This sounds easy but it’s really kind of difficult. Overall, my understanding of media relations is simply involves telling a story about an organization to an audience outside the organizations immediate reach.

My objective for this course-- to anticipate what information PR representatives should share with their audience, publications to notify and to what type of journalist to talk to. I have learned that this tactic determines how much influence I can have for a business or in the market. Surprising, media relation like most elements of public relations is not a one size fits all strategy.

What I will be taking away from this course is that as a PR professional, the most important part of the job is figuring out storylines that resonate strongly with the news outlets and blogs audience while ensuring the clients key messages are being shared and publicized properly.

Market & Consumer Research Analysis

Market and Consumer Research Analysis course gave me insight on what a public relations professional is responsible for when shaping and upholding the outward image of a brand. The course allowed me to learn and exam various marketing resources to identify the brands market, competition and consumer. In many cases it gave me the understanding of what elements to use and how to use them. The most important was the use of utilizing modern social media channels to engage when creating the brands target audience. Using tactics like analyzing and evaluating them just to find the right one. Learning the “how tos” of researching for more than just information but how to create a campaign to attract clientele. This marketing course was completely different than what I expected. I thought the course would be focused around learning how to market oneself for employment opportunities, not a brand. To be honest, I really enjoyed taking this course and completing the required assignments. It’s made me want to go above and beyond, making sure that my brand will be successful in the art industry. By completing so many other things such as contacting out of state organizations and making sure my brand is constantly engaging with her audience and producing a large number of followers. What I am taking away from this course is how to gather information demographically. Using surveys and/or focus groups to measure unbiased approaches. It’s insane how helpful feedback from others and change your whole thought process and perspective. I was a little hesitant about if I wanted to become a public relations professional. But after taking this course as well as other courses, have made me want to stick with this program. Hopefully, after completing my master’s program I will continue representing my brand, so I am able to have something to put on my portfolio to show potential employers.

Social Media Metric and ROI-

Social Media Metric and ROI taught me the ability to understand how to measure and evaluate the impact of public relations as a whole. Social media is known to be the collective of online communication channel dedicated to community-based interaction, content sharing and collaboration. Social media is becoming an integral part of life. In business it is used to market products, promote brands, connect to current consumers and foster new businesses. This course introduced me to social media analytics, gathering data from blogs and social media sites and analyzing that data to make successful business decisions. Mining sentiments to support marketing brands and customer services activities. The knowledge I will take from this course is critical to ensuring the success of any public relations position I decide to take in the future. This course taught me how to track, report and analyze a variety of metrics that describes an audience behavior and attitude through social media. The goal for this course served its purpose. It gave me the insight I will need to determine how to search audience trends, website traffic and social behavior such as sharing content. Since I am not a social media guru, this course caught me up to speed on what I needed to know if I want to become a successful public relations specialist. In addition, I was able to work more with my client, for my capstone project. Helping her revamp her social media pages and building up her following base. My goal is to create content that’s so compelling that users begin sharing it with their social network. The importance of social media marketing is social networking which helps companies or individuals increase brand exposure and broaden customer reach. This by far is one course I feel was important for me to take.

Innovative Public Relations Tools and Resources

This particular course was different from all the other PR courses I have taken. This course forced my attention to different media techniques that could solve different communication problems. It made me exam the unique characteristics of popular technologies such as social media networks, real time media, and content sharing. In all honesty, I wasn’t too fond of this class. Learning the unique properties of each social media platform as well as the strategic problems each technology address in the context of PR campaign. At one point, I thought maybe public relations was not the right field for me and how I should look into something else. Then I thought maybe I should keep going and not give up due to one particular course. See, I’m not a social media guru and technology is not one of my strong attributes even though I work at IBM as a IT project manager. I just feel that social media is overrated. Posts, twits, followers, to me it’s just someone sharing way too much information about themselves online. To some degree it has to be a point where you draw a line on sharing so much personal information. While looking at people’s Twitter and Facebook accounts, I noticed a lot of people’s negative view points. For example, if someone shared their own personal opinion it was always one or two people giving negative feedback. Then I noticed some social media accounts where they post bullying and fights amongst kids and laughed about it throughout the recording. Personally, I just don’t get what it’s all about. Now I do understand the reason behind why businesses and PR reps have social media platforms and that will be the only reason I would use social media and that is for business only. Even though I don’t think this particular class was for me, I do understand why I had to take it. I did learn a lot of things I did not know.

Legal Aspect of Media

The assignment in Legal Aspect of Media, which I considered my favorite was the case study. I thought it was extremely important to understand defamation cases since I plan to become a PR representative. This class fulfilled the goal of explaining what the elements of defamation were and the corresponding defense, the standard defamation for public official’s vs private individual, and lastly the strategies to avoid using defamation content in written material. I even got the opportunity to investigate the many different defamation cases on the discussion board post. In addition, I enjoyed learning and recognizing the different types of copyright infringements and the complete understanding of the limitation of the fair use defense. I am thinking this last assignment in Legal Aspect of Media will be interesting, since its dealing with the role of the First Amendment and the limitations of freedom of speech as well as exploring the commercial speech doctrine. All of the topic I have listed are important to know, especially in the industry field I am trying to go into. For example, do you know how many images/photos that I have used from the internet to include in a PowerPoint presentation or on my social media pages and never gave credit to the actual owner of that image/photo. This has made me realize that no matter what, any material that I plan to use, including photos, if it’s not something I created on my own then I need to give credit to the owner. I seriously don’t want to be in any legal issues with anyone over copyrighted information.

The assignment that I struggled to understand and even complete was the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). I read the content of how it dealt with the rights to access government records and to determine the exemptions and procedures for requesting public information, but something just did not click with how to complete that assignment. I can’t blame anyone but myself, I should have asked questions in advance instead of not completing the assignment. Overall, this class was extremely beneficial in my journey.

Writing for Interactive Media online course gave me a new perspective on telling interactive, narrative stories. I now know how difficult it is to engage an audience and well keep their attention. I now give a new respect to journalist and how they must convey themes through their writing. It’s funny, once I wanted to be a journalist, now I have gotten a taste of what is expected and I might want to rethink it. Going into public relations, I would also have to deal with this type of work since journalism and public relations go hand and hand to a point. The course wasn’t what I was expecting but it did teach me a lot of things I didn’t know. It’s kind of hard trying to keep the audience attention. Sometimes a person might think their writing is perfect, like I did but I know I still need to work on a couple of things to improve my writing skills. The stories I wrote about in this class got my attention but doesn’t mean I kept the audience attention which I am trying to figure out, if it’s the content one writes about or if it how you write it. My goal objective for this course was to develop and produce professional interactive media communications for a variety of genres. I feel that this class was a stepping stone, it helped me touch the surface of my objective goal but if I continue to work at narrative storytelling than I will get better. I did enjoy taking this course which completely surprised me. Hopefully my master’s program continues to help me grow and gain the skills I need to go into my career field. Overall, I thought the class flew by too fast but I am glad I was required to take it.

Public Relations in Digital World

This month flew by so fast, it felt like I just started the course and now it’s over. Before starting Public Relations in a Digital World course, I expected it to be structured very differently than how it was. I was surprised how much I enjoyed this course. Usually, I would do homework just to do it and not think about it later but I was truly excited about completing each assignment each week even the discussion board assignments.

Even though I enjoyed completing all the assignment in Public Relations in a Digital World, my favorite was creating a press release. It was something about this assignment that sparked my attention and gave me more insight in the PR industry. The assignment dealt with creativity and had you put together an event that you basically have to sell to an audience. Completing that assignment made me feel like I was actually a PR rep completing an assignment for a company instead of a class.

The course topic that was covered this month in class that would be most helpful to me as a public relations professional would be week 1 assignment, website platform research. This assignment introduced me on how to showcase a portfolio to a potential employer on the kind of work I am capable of doing for them. This is something that can help get me in the door of a potential PR company after graduation. So much that I have learned in this class will be included on my resume so that I can show employers that I am knowledgeable. Out of all the classes I have taken for my Bachelors and now for my Masters, I would have to say this is my favorite. I feel that this class has introduced me to the beginning of the PR industry to prepare me for more to come.

Abdul Sattar Edhi- Inspirational Man

Abdul Sattar Edhi was an inspirational man up until his death. From a young age, he started helping the less fortunate. His mother was the one who taught him by giving him lunch money each day and telling him that half of the money belonged to him and the other half he had to help the less fortunate. When he grew up he opened shelters for children, women and special needs individuals. He used donations from people to assist feeding the people he placed in the shelters. This man had a beautiful heart, he was an awarding winning philanthropist and humanitarian. Known in Pakistan as “Angel of Mercy” and “Pakistan’s Father Teresa” Before his death he had adopted over 20,000 children that he helped and raised as his own. One of his greatest quotes “My religion is humanitarianism, which is the basis of every religion in the world”. This man’s organization even helped the victim in New Orleans when hurricane Katrina destroyed everything. He came from a lot and was still humble enough to give everything he had to the people that did not have anything and I consider him to be a great inspiration to all human beings.
