You and Spencer are not in love with eachother.
You say this, then spend entire weekends together after making a point to not invite anyone else to tag along.
You say this, then have your own language made up of quick glances and slight changes in expressions.
You say this, then have Spencer Reid as your lockscreen on your phone.
Emily notices it first, after you absentmindedly leave your phone screen-up on the table during a case. Someone calls out a question about the time and, seeing the phone next to her, she naturally pushes the home button so the screen lights up with the time, date, and lockscreen.
Her call-out of the time dies in her throat when the picture registers. It takes her less than a second to realise this is your phone, because who else could it be, then another few seconds to really appreciate the picture.
It’s Spencer, grinning the biggest, cheesiest grin she’s ever seen on his face, teeth and crinkled eyes and all, sitting cross-legged on your couch in one of his silk matching pyjama sets. He’s wearing odd socks, one blue and one pink, and the blush of his cheeks could be from heat or simply from having you close because-
His hair is in French braids. Split in the middle, a short cascade down his hair, poking out from the bottom of his head either side.
You braided his hair. Something the team has been trying to do, individually and as a unit, for literal years. You’ve been a part of the team just over a year.
She looks up to where you stand, shoulder-to-shoulder with Spencer in front of the evidence boards, mouth slightly ajar. With her eyes locked on you, her left hand flies to the side to slap Derek’s bicep, causing him to look at her in confusion and open his mouth to ask why the hell did you just-
She slides the phone across to him. Clicks the button, watches his face transform.
JJ, flicking through a case file from behind where Emily and Derek sit, witnesses the whole interaction and catches sight of the phone. And Holy Hell.
The blonde’s head whips lighting fast to you two. Spencer’s making you laugh, beaming at you when you find one of his jokes funny, and all she can think about is the literal hundreds of times her and Penelope have used every piece of ammunition and persuasive skills they have to try to convince Spencer to let them play with and braid his hair. Every time, no matter what, he would say no. Said he doesn’t think he’d find the feeling of people running their fingers through his hair comforting, because his mother would always do it and she’s the only one who is allowed to.
You and Spencer are not in love, you say.

You know something is up when, during a quick break, Emily and Derek are nudging eachother like dumb and dumber – they’re encouraging the other to say something and given that you’re the only other person in the room, you assume it has something to do with you.
To hide your suspicion you take a long sip of your coffee, watching them over the lip of your mug with narrowed eyes. There’s only hushed whispers and terribly disguised side-eye glances until your phone buzzes, turning to zero in on you when you pull it from your pocket and you figure it out.
Spencer might kill you. He still doesn’t know about it – it took a pinky promise that you would join him in watching a Russian film for him allow you to take the picture (like you wouldn’t do it anyway just to spend time with him).
“Just say it.”
Emily purses her lip to avoid looking too smug.
Derek points with the cup in his hand, “That picture. Is it new?”
You nod, taking another sip.
Emily’s visibly frustrated, then, and decides she doesn’t want to play the long game – a verbal game of table tennis where Derek implies something and you play ignorant – so she steps forward, “You braided his hair?”
“I braid his hair a lot.”
Their shock comes out in unison. “A lot?”
“Yeah,” You shrug, “It’s getting long and it annoys him.”
“Y/N,” Emily picks up your phone, shows the lockscreen and shakes it at you, “We’ve been trying to do this for years! Years! And you convince him to do it not once, but many times? Do you not realise what this means?”
Your nose crinkles. “What?”
“He’s in love with you.”
The wry laugh rips from you, and you take the phone from her before taking your leave. “Okay, sure.”
Shaking your head, you tell yourself your friends are seeing things that simply are not there.
Spencer’s waiting for you to return – you know because he’s watching the doorway you walk through and perks up, asking how your coffee is when you sit next to him – and you can’t help but stare at him a little longer than usual, a question on the tip of your tongue, biting your lip when he knocks his knee against yours.
You and Spencer are not in love, you say. Yet you’re soulmates, and the gob-smacked bystanders wait patiently for you to finally realise.

Part I

“Whoa! Everybody freeze.” Y/N held her hands up in the universal stop gesture. Twenty small bodies stumbled to a stop, trembling with the effort to hold still. “Our noise level is at a ten, and right now I need it to be a four. We’re running way behind because Ms. Y/L/N lost track of time.” She held her hand up and counted on her fingers as she listed the afternoon to-dos. “Smocks need to get put back into the Smock Box. Desk caddies need to be straightened up. Jackets and backpacks need to be zipped up and on our bodies. Then our walking feet need to take us to our line spots. Capisce?”
Twenty hands brought their fingers to their thumbs, shaking their ma che vuoi. “Capisce!”
She waved her hand. “Okay, everybody thawed.”
They just barely made it out to the carpool loop in time, Y/N waving wild air traffic controller arms to navigate the line of kindergarteners to their spot. Dismissal was a blur. She waved to minivans and SUVs, zipping up rogue backpacks and hooking her finger into the collar of one friend that swayed a little too close to the curb. After the main vehicle surge dissipated, she saw a familiar blue Volvo pulling around the loop. The corners of her mouth twitched up, and she nudged Michael. “Look who’s here.”
Spencer pulled to a stop in front of the pair of them, and Michael bounded across the sidewalk. He pulled the door open and hopped in the backseat. Y/N leaned down and rested her forearm on the open window. “If I didn’t know better, I’d think the LaMontagnes had been kidnapped.” Spencer blushed, and Y/N was pretty sure she’d never get sick of seeing that pretty pink on his cheeks. He’d been picking Michael up at least twice a week for the past two weeks. It was getting to the point where she was disappointed to see one of the LaMontagnes’ dark SUVs.
Summary: When Will asks him to pick Michael up from school, Spencer may or may not develop a schoolboy crush on the kindergarten teacher.

“A strong geographical profile is one of the most important pieces of the overall behavioral profile; it significantly narrows the area the team has to cover, allows for law enforcement teams to prioritize and maximize limited resources, and helps focus the investigation in conjunction with the other elements of the profile. And that wraps our section on building geographical profiles!” Spencer smiled at the faces in front of him, gesturing to the board. “The information we covered today will make up a significant portion of your midterm, so make sure to review it before next week. See you all next Thursday!”
As his students began packing up their things, Spencer’s phone rang from inside his bag. When he retrieved the phone and saw Will’s name on the caller ID, his brow furrowed in concern. “Will— everything ok?”
“Hey, yeah, yeah, everything’s fine,” he assured him. “I’m sorry to ask, but JJ’s on a case, and my partner and I just finished our last call clear on the other side of the city. Henry’s got soccer practice, but Michael’s gotta be picked up in about— well, shit, right about now. Would you mind picking him up and bringing him ‘round to the house?”
Spencer looped the strap of his bag over his shoulder and started up the aisle out of the lecture hall. “Yeah, of course! It’s over by the Naval Observatory, right?”
“Yeah, that’s the one. If you pull ‘round the parking lot, they usually come out the side door. His teacher’s real sweet, Ms. Y/L/N. I’ll let her know you’re picking him up.”
“Okay, sounds good.” Spencer pushed open the door and made his way down the hall.
“You’re the best,” Will drawled. “I’ll only be about half an hour.”
