For a long time I thought that I was completely stupid because I was always just below average. Or so my report cards told me. It took me a long time to realize I wasn’t stupid, I just didn’t care about a lot of the stuff I was being taught. Bringing home those report cards was always a nightmare, not because I would be scolded, but because they made me feel like me intelligence was being defined by my grades. Over the summer my mom found those old report cards, and I wanted to destroy them. I’m glad I didn’t just throw them out, because this was a way more fun way of getting rid of them.
It’s a dangerous thing to attempt to fit many people into one academic box of what is “right” or “acceptable,” as far as grades and school performance. This piece sends a powerful message that no one is defined by what is on a piece of paper. You are above the paper, you destroy the societal notion that a single letter can define you. Kudos.
