iM WHEEZING
2/24/18- so Iâm currently about two weeks out from surgery and Iâve managed to get full extension through stretching taking more steps without my crutches. Week 3 mark coming up this Wednesday đ
Day 5 Post op 2/12/18- Iâm still in pain meds and canât really put a lot of weight on my knee still. I did increase the level of degrees the knee machine bends though, so thatâs progress. Tomorrow I go back to one of my three jobs and Iâm pretty stoked to be back. Iâll get a chance to see my students again and get out of the house. Iâm hoping my students are a little more cooperative considering that Iâm somewhat immobile but I wonât hold my breath lol. My goals for this week are to start icing my knee twice a day and regain more flexion within my leg. Iâm still debating ordering some ice packs I saw on another blog. Iâll keep you guys posted. Oh I forgot to mention that I got my stitches out and they replaced them with these dissolving ones. Pretty neat, huh?
Day 2- 2/9/18 had me initially out and about. I took my dog to be groomed, got my taxes done, and I finally got to take a real shower instead of just wipes which was super refreshing. Keep in mind, I havenât done all too many pt exercises because my bandages are super thick and I still canât really put weight on my leg. Around 3, I started to come down with a mild fever so I basically slept most of the day
DAY ONE-So I follow this other blog of another girl that had ACL reconstruction surgery and I feel so far behind rehab wise. I know, I know⊠you canât compare apples to oranges. My surgery was on my right leg, so thatâs already one thing that sets us apart. And while the staff was AMAZING at my outpatient hospital, I feel slightly cheated that I didnât get this level of pt consultation soâŠIâm posting her exercises as a resource for anyone who happens to need them đI must admit that my goal of staying off pain killers was short lived. Not long after posting yesterdayâs blog, I think all the anesthesia had worn off. By 9 p.m I felt an immense amount of pain and took two hydrocodene. Not only did I feel way better, I knocked out pretty quick soon after. Thatâs basically what yesterday and today have consisted of. I just fall in and out of consciousness lol. With painkillers, my pain is at a 3. Thank God đȘ. Till tomorrow folks, about to sleep again lol.
Day of surgery- so today was THE day. I was set to have the following procedures done: right knee arthroscopy, ACL reconstruction, and chondroplasty meniscus debridement versus meniscus repair. I know itâs a lot to take in. Keep in mind I tried to read up on the recovery and surgical process as much as possible. While most blogs were extremely helpful, I had yet to find a recovery blog for the right knee. Alas, my reason for creating this blog. So let me give you a breakdown of how my surgery went down today.
So I woke up at the butt crack of dawn...like 5-ish since my surgery was with a specialist in a town about two hours away. I got there around 7 and did some preliminary paperwork to get my preop procedures started. By 8 a.m. I was taken to a room so I could change into my snazzy hospital gown. I was fortunate that my nurses were super nice and attentive. By 10 a.m. I was ushered into the operating room and vaguely remember being put to sleep.
Itâs around 12 by the time I come to my senses and theyâre explaining how to use this machine that helps bend my leg every so often. Once thatâs done, Iâm whisked away in a wheelchair and am clear to leave the facility.
Let me just say that my appetite was ridiculous by the time I got out. Not only did I ask to stop at two separate Taco Bells twice (go on judge me), I also had my friend make a quick stop at Starbucks for some coffee and pumpkin bread đ
At present, Iâm currently in bed hoping I donât have too much difficulty falling back asleep since I napped a lot thought out the day. I was advised to take my pain meds as needed so Iâm going to try my best to not rely on them so much. Pain level is at about a four right now, so Iâm hoping it stays within that range. Tomorrow Iâm going to start doing at home exercises and start icing my knee. We shall see how that goes. Hasta mañana, guys!

No to Low Stress College Study Strategy
I started using this study method my 2nd month of college, when I realized that it was better for study-life balance and my emotional wellbeing. It makes me feel productive and alert all day, and gives me plenty of free time to pursue hobbies, clubs, and personal interests. It sounds kind of hardcore at first, but itâs seriously wonderful if you give it a try! Hereâs the game plan:
After the first few days of the semester, I sit down with all of the syllabi from all of my classes and write down every single assignment for the rest of the semester into my planner. Include exams, readings, lab report due dates, worksheets, essays, etc. Everything.
Every weekend, I set aside however much time I need to knock out every single assignment for the upcoming week that is possible to do in advance. I do my textbook readings, textbook practice problems, my humanities readings, short essays or write-ups to accompany those humanities readings, etc.
Even though Iâm doing more work, I generally spend the same amount of time in the library as my friends who only do their work for Monday over the weekend. This is because if you donât commit to doing a large number of assignments, you tend to spend a lot more time on minor assignments than is truly necessary - do I really need to spend 3 hours on this 1-page essay for my English class if itâs only graded on a 10 point scale? Couldnât I finish this in 1 hour and then devote more time to the rest of the readings I need to do for that class this week?
I still have enough time to sleep in, have long lunch breaks, go the gym, go to parties in the evening, etc.
You can do this, no matter your workload. I am a pre-med science major taking 20 credits (max course load) a semester, with two labs, and I can get it done. My roommate is an English major with heavy novel reading assignments and she can get it done. (Disclaimer: this mostly applies to undergraduates.)
Research papers and midterm exam studying generally get their own day separate from homework assignments. I like writing essays in 1 or 2 sittings, but if you like to spread it out just break up the essay into manageable pieces and do it over multiple weekends, or do the pieces between classes (see next bullet point).
After blasting through most of my assignments over the weekend, during the week I generally only have to do busy-work that is assigned at the end of classes and continue studying for midterms that week. I easily finish these assignments in the breaks between classes during the day.
With this strategy, I always complete all of my homework well before dinnertime, and often have days when I donât have any assignments to do. I use this free time for club meetings, hanging out with friends, going to the gym, marathoning Netflix, pursuing hobbies, working a job, whatever.
I also use this extra time to be able to study for exams much more effectively - when you donât have busywork assignments floating in the back of your mind, it is much easier to focus. You will study more productively and effectively, and with much less stress. Exams are worth way more of your grade than the homework assignments you blast through each weekend, so itâs best to be able to focus exclusively on them Monday - Friday.
The best part about this strategy is that your workload is heavy on Sunday and sometimes Saturday, but you get to relax Monday - Friday. You basically have a 5 day weekend every week, assuming you enjoy going to class.
If anyone also uses this method, Iâd love to hear from you or hear your variants/study suggestions! If anyone tries out this method for 1 or 2 weeks and finds that it works for them, Iâd love to hear about it! If you try it and hate it with a fiery burning passion and loathe me for even suggesting it, Iâd love to hear about it!
I believe in you!<3 No matter what study method you choose to use, just do your best and exceed your own expectations.
This map should be included in every history book.
Oh wow! Iâve been wanting this for ages!
This needs to be in every history book along with a map showing where those nations have been pushed to now.
Donât talk about it, donât ask about it
PhD student #1: âHow are you? How are things going?â
PhD student #2:Â âAwesome! Things are great. I presented at this super prestigious conference last week. Iâm also finishing up this very important article that will totally be accepted by a well-known journal. I have four grant applications on the go, writing them is so much fun, I am totally going to win at least half of them, because why wouldnât I? Iâm special. I met so and so at some swanky and totally exclusive event (you obviously werenât there) and now I basically have a job lined up post-completion, never mind that like, no university is really hiring full-time tenured positions in abundance anymore. Teaching is going so well, my students love me and I definitely know each and every one of their names. Oh, and I definitely got hired on that fancy project everyone wants a piece of even though it pays practically nothing and it will totally delay my own research and my own completion. Iâm super busy and important! Everythingâs good!â
How come in academia how you are doing is measured by how much you have accomplished/how busy you are?
How come in academia talking about feelings, emotions, how you are actually doing (Iâm scared. Iâm afraid. This is really hard. Iâm struggling. I feel depressed. I canât do this. I feel so alone. Iâm isolated. This isnât fun.) is like some taboo subject no one wants to touch?
Not talking about real experiences and struggles creates a toxic culture of fear and shame in academic environments.Â
Everyone walking around pretending everything is sunshine and rainbows, that no struggle exists, that things are not just easy, but AWESOME, creates an environment in which when you are actually really and truly struggling, you feel completely alone and isolated and like you are the only one who is feeling that way and therefore there is something wrong with you.
And it stigmatizes those who are brave enough to say âhey, this is hard and I need some helpâ as weak.Â
There is nothing wrong with you. You are not weak. Grad school is no fucking picnic. Those who claim otherwise are simply lying to you and themselves.Â
Woof. This. So hard.
