That sounds like the story of a lot of kids in The Commonwealth, he bit his tongue. Not the worst place a wandering kid could end up. Seemed like a kid with a curious streak.
He turned his attention to the display, the Pre-War section, old children’s toys some terminals, clocks, camera, among other things. Everyone calls this section junk. “Ah, no. I just made them look in decent shape, a little paint makes a world of difference. I never had the head for electronics, wires and things. The terminal works though.”
“I know some things,” he offered with a shrug. Fixing some Pre-War tech would be more interesting than helping Nat sell papers, although he didn’t think that the curator would really want a kid messing with his displays.
“I could show you how, or I can take a look for you? I’ve taken apart a few of these things before for parts. Shouldn’t be too hard to put one back together.”
He eyed the boy for a second and sighed. “Well, I don’t see the harm in it. If you like, you can start on the more replaceable pieces. Then we’ll see from there.”
He moved over to the desk with the terminal, he began to rifle through the drawers, occasionally pulling out a tool like a screwdriver or some epoxy. “I don’t have much in the ways of tools here. I usually -hmm... have someone else take care of that sort of thing.”
“Oooh!” She was genuinely excited as he gave her a little tour, the redhead patting her cheeks lightly as she followed the man. The fact that she wandered upon this place delighted her. Her grin stretched her cheeks and she could hardly contain her excitement.
“I’m so jealous.” She wanted to listen to them all. But he might be annoyed if she spent however much time she wanted listening to them. “Which ones can I listen to? I have my own pipboy…”
“Oh. Well.” He coughed in a failed attempt to hide his smile, the tops of his cheeks turned red. It’s not everyday he gets this sort of a reaction to his collection. He’s trying to play down his own excitement.
“This here in this box is open for the public. We have a terminal for their listening but your Pip-Boy will work.” He reaches in the box. “Hmm, here’s some children wishing their father a Happy Birthday, a groom reciting his wedding vows, a recorded radio play...”

Olivia stepped in further as he opened the door for her, glancing around. “Still to have your own place like this, you must be committed to keeping up a collection like this.” She felt a little giddy. It wasn’t often others enjoyed her same interests and if she slipped up and touched something she didn’t think this man would shoot her. Well maybe. You never knew with people.
“What’s your favorite thing you have?” she asked, genuinely interested.
No one has ever asked that before, his face lit up. He gestures for her to follow. “Oh, well then, where to start?”
“We have a small collection of Colonial Boston, some art pieces, Diamond City history, book books books, Pre-War Boston...ah!” he pointed in the general direction in the room. He stops in the in the middle of the Pre-War section. A small terminal stand on a wooden desk with a large wooden box. With the care of a parent holding their child he opens the box, about thirty or so holotapes lie within.
“Diaries. Pre-War diaries. This is only a small part of my collection. Day to day comings and goings of people before the bombs, even a few after. It doesn’t get better than this. History right from the mouths of the past.”
This man was a little strange, wasn’t he? Oh well, Olivia was fine with strangeness, after all she herself could be considered a little weird. “I am. Why, do they often send people here as a joke?” She asked with a wary little smile.
She offered him her hand. “I’m Olivia. Do you run this little place all on your own?”
Did he say that out loud? That was embarrassing, the tops of his cheeks turned a little red. They have done it before, the marketplace that is, got a good giggle out of it.
He gave a smile and gently took her hand and shook it. “Think nothing of it, it’s... just a little joke we have.”
He released her hand, and opened the door wider, he gestures to the whole of The Society. “I’m Jacob and this place is all mine. It’s not much but it’s mine.”
“Oh, my Dad is outside the Wall. I’m staying with his… friend until he’s back,” Shaun wasn’t sure what he should call Piper. He liked her (his dad obviously liked her), she was nice and really pretty. He would like to think that his mom was like her. The reporter had been busy the last few days helping the rest of the city clean up after what happened to the old mayor, hopefully she would not notice that he had went exploring through the markets.
Shaun pointed to the contents of the display that he was in front of, “Do any of these work?”

“This place sure has some really neat stuff, mister.”
The young synth looked over his shoulder when the door to the museum opened, he wasn’t technically supposed to be here. He was supposed to stay with Piper and Nat while his dad and Mr Valentine were out doing stuff ouside the Wall. Shaun wasn’t sure who he should be afraid of more, his Dad or Piper. Regardless he was sure to get more than an earful when he went back home.
This kid presented an interesting situation. Most of the children in Diamond City had to be dragged to The Society kicking and screaming. Most adults would have to be dragged to The Society kicking and screaming. Jacob looks around for an adult, no one in sight. Maybe he was dumped here. It’s happened before.
“Thank you. Please be careful, many of these items are quite old. I must ask, are your parents around?”
‘Diamond City Historical Society.’
The sign was an awful intrigue on its own and man, was she bored. She’d come into town with Alex and Dead Sea, but the boys were off doing… things, so she had thought she’d wander about, but now…. Perhaps she should’ve stayed home with her books and animals. Or maybe have stopped off at the library, or-
Olivia shook her head and grabbed the door knob. After all, what was the point of wishing she was home when she was already out? She might as well take a moment and learn the history of the place, yeah? This was the sort of thing that was right up her alley.
She opened the door, giving a small squeak of surprise as she felt it bump someone. Sticking her head in, she gave a small grimace. “Ah, I’m sorry. I came to check out the Historical society?”
Jacob wasn’t sure what spooked him more, getting bumped by the door or the fact that the door was actually opened by someone else. He straightened himself out, first posture, then his clothes and a light touch to his hair. He got it right the first time, no need to do it again.
She didn’t look like a local. No, he usually has a good head for faces. Most locals didn’t care to come up here, except the kids but even they are forced to go. At first he thought she might have been someone just wandered in the wrong place, but lo and behold she was actually here to see his museum.
“It’s alright, no harm done- wait you’re actually here to see the exhibits? Those awful people from the market didn’t send you here as joke did they?” He pauses. “I’m sorry, we just don’t get visitors. Come in!”

Sure, the sign to outside the Diamond City Historical Society said ‘Open’ but hardly anyone ever crosses through the door. Jacob can’t even recall the last time he heard the jingle of the door. No, he could, it was the group of children from the school. They left quite the mess. It took a good day to get everything right.
No one walking through the door would see him right away anyway, no, he was hiding behind a row of bookshelves. He was fighting the urge to pull out all the books and reorganize them. His last assistant did it wrong, that’s why he fired her, only he could do it right.
This was boring. He needed something to keep him mind occupied, he could step out go exploring. He could. Or he could close early and fall asleep. That’s the ticket. Close up early. Jacob made his way to the front reaching for the doorknob.
