Back of the business card progress.

The card was laser cut so the typeface displays on the back which shows magazine cuts through the cut out lettering ‘Pastel’ and then engraved lettering ‘skate’.  First I was finding some attractive colours to use on the business cards by scanning the card over certain pages in the magazine. Once I found something I liked, I ripped out a piece from the magazine and sprayed glue onto the card.  Once everything was glued and placed together, I then clamped it down using a book press in the workshop (what I used on the labels) and trimmed the edges to clean the card up.

Laser engraved coasters.

Speed of 20 with a power of 15 to not burn the coaster completely. The design was created through illustrator and then burnt into cork.

For my primary and secondary research I looked into skateboarding brands and the way they advertise their products using social media and clothing websites. By looking at different types of advertising and skateboarding brands it gave me some ideas of what I was going to be producing for myself. I also scanned in some magazine advertisements to my blog.

Once I was happy with the research I had gathered I was then ready to figure out what name I was going to call my skateboarding brand. By doing this I made a list of some names which related with skateboarding and I then finalised it down to the final one which was ‘Pastel Skateboards’. The reason why I went ahead with this is because it could have a colour theme to go with the skateboards.

I used lots of different methods such as the press to create embossed business cards, the laser cut machine to cut into the wood of the skateboard deck and grip tape, Tie-dye experimentation with clothing such as teeshirts and hats and also playing around with water colours and pastels in my sketchbook.

Once I had my final name for the brand I then started to sketch out rough ideas for what I would and could use for a logo for my brand. Once I was happy with the final sketch that I produced, I then started to illustrate the logo on Adobe illustrator so it was ready to print onto clothing, laser cutting, posters, business cards, labels and more. 

With the budget that I had for this project I had to use it effectively. I had purchased items for the project ready to be produced for my final outcome such as tee-shirts, hats, business cards and more. The items can be found on my blog.

I had learnt how to use the laser cut machine to cut into the wood of the skateboard deck and the grip tape of the skateboard to finish the skateboard completely. I also learnt how to create some flowers using dyes and water colours with just a piece of string. I also learnt how to tie dye teeshirts following youtube tutorials which I had found and posted to my blog. 

Everything was going great until this final week as I hit a major problem. The problem was that the screen prints are not working correctly which means I am unable to create the tee-shirts as planned. The screen prints was going to be used to add the branding logos to the clothing which I had tie-dyed. I also hit another big problem as I found out I was unable to embroider the hats correctly as the machines only do label embroidery from images. 

Overall, I have learnt and produced a lot of work for my skateboarding brand and I really do think I used the money I spent on the items effectively. I am a little devastated that I was unable to create the final pieces correctly however I have enjoyed the project and hit all the goals I set for myself. Another upside to this project is that when the screen prints are fixed, I can print the teeshirts at anytime.

Business Card.

The first thing I did was cut the crafting card from A4 to a good size for a business card which you can see on the image. Once I was happy with the size of the business card I then added it to water in the workshop to make the card flexible enough to be able to emboss the logo onto the card. I am possibly going to add the Instagram page link on the back of the card so people can view it.

Pastel Skateboards Labels.

Once I sketched enough ideas in my sketchbook of the labels I could make, I decided to go ahead with this design. For the labels, I laser-cut the logo into the craft card which I have purchased and then cut them into a shape suitable to hang from the clothing. I added a coloured piece of paper to add between the card to create the pastel colour for the logo and then added glue to the labels. Once the glue was added I then hole punched and threaded the string through the hole. I finally then added the labels to a book press to make the labels less flimsy.

Custom Grip.

So after watching the gripping video which I posted earlier on my blog, I decided to give it a go for myself. However, I laser-cut my own custom text into the grip tape for the skateboard deck to make it really stand out differently.

Adding the little bits of grip into the text was a little difficult as I lost some pieces but I did manage to cut out some custom shapes using the grip tape I had left over to complete the piece.

Inspiration.

Today I have come across a video which I found on Facebook of a woman painting flowers with string. I got pretty curious to how this was actually done as I think it may benefit me with my pastel skateboard brand.  So I simply looked it up on YouTube to see if there was any tutorials on the artwork and after five minutes of looking around I came across this video. 

I am going to attempt this artwork this Friday to see how it can possibly benefit my poster/print designs.
