Taking place at Chisenhale Studios, London in 2017,  Standpoint Futures visual art development residencies are for emerging/mid career artists, designed to be flexible and responsive to the project, needs and desired outcomes of individual participants. Simon Bayliss POP MORPHOSIS

Public Event Thursday 2 March 8-10pm      

For the culmination of his Standpoint Futures residency Simon Bayliss is collaborating with artists and musicians working with pop music, rave and live performance. The event has developed through conversations with Sian Dorrer performing as Acid Prawn, and Susie Green who collaborates with Bayliss as Splash Addict.

The idea of metamorphosis stems from Splash Addict’s latest track, a dance cover of ‘Smalltown Boy’ by Bronski Beats, the lyrics of which describe a painful life-transition from oppressive parochial sexual-conservatism to urban liberation.

Acid Prawn’s piece ‘What Women Do’ (featuring Joey Four) features live soundtrack, online make-up tutorials and sandwich making. Rafal Zajko will be performing a psychedelic sound work in collaboration with pop singer Zoee. Lobsta B aka Leon Bayliss, will be DJing a ‘pop-rave megamix’.

2017 Residencies have begun!

We have been remiss in updating our Tumblr - there has been plenty going on. We have moved! SF are working in partnership with the fantastic Chisenhale Studios in 2017. This is the new residency studio (wowsers)

Simon Bayliss (23 January - 3 March) simon-bayliss.com

Simon explores identity and what it means to be both ‘rural’ and queer. He attempts to queer, and make contemporary, rural themes such as landscape painting and slipware pottery. He  also collaborates with artist Lucy Stein as BLISS (Bayliss & Stein), and has recently set up the ‘Artist Tea Towel Company’. Simon is based in Cornwall.

AJ Stockwell (20 March - 28 April) aj-stockwell.com

AJ is interested in how human life can be defined and archived through objects and materials, and how communication can operate across timelines through a shared 'material' culture. Working across mediums, sculpture, video and text, recent work has focused on observing ceramic artefacts as objects that can endure whole civilisations and cultures, presenting a constructed image of past lives. AJ is based in Cardiff. She completed her MA in Ceramics in 2014, and her residency is supported by The Fenton Arts Trust.

Nicola Dale (15 May - 23 June) nicoladale.com

Nicola Dale makes sculptures and performances that arise mainly out of research within institutional archives (recent examples include: Shanghai Library, National Arts Education Archive (YSP), University of Manchester’s Medical School). She is  interested in how “knowledge” manifests itself and how its continuation is constructed. Nicola is based in Stockport.

Phallacy is a performance by artist Brian J Morrison and the culmination of his six week Standpoint Futures residency.

Brian J Morrison’s practice is built on an engagement with the social theory of heteronormative masculinity and aims to offer a critical enquiry into the hegemonic forces that instill regressive gender codes. Primarily using appropriated, gender encoded, advertising imagery, he creates works that relate to the actions, motions and rituals of extreme bodybuilding.

For the past two years Morrison has been interrogating the discourse surrounding the imagery produced by Joe Weider’s publishing empire (the world’s leading fitness magazine publisher) and the legacy it created within this intensely gendered area of society.

The output of these investigations has resulted in the production of sculptural -yet inherently flat- objects. The works attempt to activate an interaction, which re-examines our relationship with materials, imagery and the body.

Brian J Morrison was born in Belfast 1980 and now lives and works in Birmingham. He has made solo exhibitions No Pain No Gain!!! at Supercollider, Blackpool in 2014, and Ripped Chiseled Rock Hard, as part of The Belfast Photography Festival in 2013. He teaches on the BA (Hons) and MA Photography at the University of Central Lancashire.
