This is a mantis shrimp. It may look small, but it delivers one of the fastest and most powerful strikes in the animal kingdom. Its punch is so fast it creates shock waves underwater and can crack shells that would stop most predators. Sometimes reality is more unbelievable than science fiction.

Song Review: Widespread Panic - “Smokestack Lightning” (Live, July 10, 2026)

Widespread Panic were gritty, grimy and charged with electricity July 10 in Oregon when they performed “Smokestack Lightning.”

The band was enamored enough with the results, it released a professional video. Upon watching and listening to it, fans will likely be enamored, too.

It’s a not-too-often revealed side of the Panics, one where jamming is confined within a simmering, unchanging melody and the players must work as hard at restraint as they typically do at revelry.

The result is a quarter-hour of smolder. Widespread Panic is not really a blues band, but can pull it off on occasion.

The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World by Robin Wall Kimmerer—Anyone who loves Nature or wants to improve their relationship with Nature should read Kimmerer’s works, whether it’s _Braiding Sweetgrass_, _Gathering Moss_, or this beautiful addition to her bibliography, _The Serviceberry_. Kimmerer is a biologist with the writing prowess and soul of a poet. Her writing is so beautiful and her reasoning, explanations, and calls to action are so logical and straight-forward that I find myself increasing frustrated with the capitalistic and consumer market we’ve dug ourselves into. Kimmerer blends Indigenous teachings with ecological and biological imperatives in a way that makes learning about the world around us a beautiful and moving experience. 5🌟
