Hey y’all seem to like this so I wrote this little ditty, how’s this so far~~

Peter had heard of universes where being different was a good thing. He had heard stories of places where being different was encouraged. And no, he wasn’t talking about the fake differences that everyone sees in everyday life, where one is encouraged to be just different enough to be memorable and make a difference to society, but not so much that you caused problems for other people just by existing slightly to the left of everyone else. No, Peter was thinking of the fairy tale books from his childhood where the fairies with magical powers were the good guys and the ordinary people in the village were just supporting characters - not to say ordinary people weren’t supporting characters in the rich and powerful’s lives - but the people with wondrous capabilities were always the heroes. Not like the stories he heard when the housekeeper that read him those stories went away for some reason (although now that he was older he definitely knew why). In those stories, the odd and magical were the traitors and villains, just as they were in society.

See, Peter’s world encouraged difference just enough so that people like him - smart and, apparently, good-natured - could rise to the top (this had nothing to due with his rich father, oh no, never) and be memorable and not be under public scrutiny. But if one was too different, one would be not as welcomed as he was- He was on the ground, his books flying everywhere, his glasses somewhere off in neverland for all he could find them-

“See you later, loser!”

Okay. So maybe he wasn’t as accepted as most normal people. But he still wasn’t hated by the general public, seen as some sort of scapegoat for society’s problems.

Then again, mutants did have a tendency to be at the center of many, many problems. He knew for certain that his dad hated them, and he usually trusted his dad with everything he had. But in all his years of existing in a world where mutants were seen as less than dirt and more dangerous than active volcanoes, he couldn’t bring himself to fully hate them like everyone else did. Did they disgust him? Sure, a little. Was he scared of them? Oh yes. Very much yes. But did he believe they were the reason for every problem ever? No. He couldn’t get behind that.

It takes Peter three tries before he’s able to put the suit on after Tony’s death. It takes him another four once he realizes the AI in it is Tony.

Pepper approached him not long after Tony’s death. Her eyes were red, but every other part of her appearance was as carefully composed as always. But when she handed Peter the suit, her hands shook. Her voice, though, was steady when she spoke.

“He wanted you to have this, if ever he… yeah.”

So now Peter’s sitting on the edge of his bed, chest heaving with churning grief, the echo of Tony’s voice still ringing in his ears.

“What’ll it be today, Parker?” Tony’s voice had greeted. And after four tries, Peter was expecting it, but it still didn’t make him any more prepared.

So for awhile, he just sits there.

The AI gives him time, though. There’s a second where Peter thinks, I can’t do this, how could he think doing this was okay?

He takes in another deep breath and stands, heading for his window, and climbs to the roof. Everything is always more clear from up high, a bigger picture you just can’t get from anywhere else.

It takes another hour before he’s able to do anything more than breathe.

His voice shakes when he finally speaks. “Tony?”

“Hey, kid,” the AI responds immediately, and Peter’s chest cracks wide open at that. A sob rises in his throat, but he swallows it down.

“Hi,” he chokes out.

“So are we going to fight some criminals or sit in the cold all night?” Tony prompts, and Peter lets out a wet laugh.

“Yeah,” he answers, trying to keep it together. “Yeah. Where to?”

And just like that, they’re a team again.

“Left! Take a left!” Tony’s voice yells at him as he swings wildly through the city in hot pursuit of a mugger.

Peter, in a moment of pure panic and disorientation, takes a right.

“The other left, Pete!” the suit yells at him, sounding exasperated, and Peter quickly backtracks.

It’s been a month since the first night Peter went on patrol with the suit. And even though there’s still a pang in his chest every time he hears Tony’s voice, he pushes it down and lets himself pretend.

“Sorry, sorry!” Peter apologizes.

Once he finally catches up to the man dressed in all black, webbing him up takes almost no time at all. Peter quickly snags the bag of cargo and rifles through it.

“Seriously?” he asks incredulously, staring down at the man now webbed to a trash can. “All that for some Twizzlers and cheap cologne? Wow, your life must be really sad.”

Peter heads back to the store to return the stolen items, hopping from rooftop to rooftop. Just as he gets to his destination, his toe catches on the handle of a metal hatch in the roof, and he falls forward.

“Fuck!” he yells, pitching over the edge of the building. He quickly shoots a web and catches himself, looking around to see if anyone was watching.

Luckily, though, no one seems to have been paying attention. The people of New York are way too used to seeing Spider-Man around to be properly awed anymore.

“Nice, kid,” Tony says wryly, and Peter groans.

“You’re never gonna let me live that down, are you?” Peter asks, grimacing.

“I recorded the whole thing,” Tony quips. “Whenever you do something stupid now, I’ll just play this video for you to remind you that you’re a reckless dumbass.”

“Thanks, Tony,” Peter says dryly. “Always good to be humbled.”

“Exactly. What would you do without me?”

I already am without you, a voice in Peter’s head supplies, but Peter shuts it down in favor of saying, “Live in peace, maybe.”

Tony scoffs. “That would be absolutely no fun.”

“For you, maybe,” Peter responds, dropping stolen goods off at the store. “Where to next?”

“Nightclub,” Tony answers without hesitation. “Pretty women.”

“I’m going to mute you,” Peter threatens, but the AI just laughs in his ear.

“You wouldn’t do that. You love me too much.”

Yeah, Peter thinks. I do.

Peter’s back on the roof late one night, dressed in the suit.

“Where are we headed, Pete?” Tony asks, but Peter just shakes his head.

“Nowhere. I just wanted to think,” Peter tells him.

“Oh? So why am I here?”

Peter hesitates before he answers. “I just didn’t want to be alone.” Tony doesn’t say anything after that.

These past few months have been much better for him. He’s gotten out more, even hanging out with Ned and MJ on occasion. Every so often, he gets dinner with Pepper and they reminisce. It’s nice. But when he’s not doing that, he’s in the suit.

It’s one of the few times the emptiness left in Tony’s wake doesn’t eat at him.

“It’s been nice,” Peter says finally. “Having you here, I mean.”

Tony takes a moment before responding. When he does, the AI’s voice is uncharacteristically gentle.

“It’s not me, Pete. Not really. Just a piece of tech,” the AI says softly, and the Band Aid that’d been placed over Peter’s grief-cracked soul rips off.

“It’s… no,” Peter protests, shaking his head. “It’s… It’s basically you, right? I mean. It’s close enough.”

“Peter. I’m just an AI,” the voice says firmly, and Peter’s eyes well with tears, not letting himself accept the reality. Because goddammit, it’s much easier to pretend that he’s talking to Tony - the real Tony. Makes his absence seem that much more like a nightmare than a reality.

“But I…” Peter’s voice cracks, words falling from his lips brokenly. “I just want you.”

“I’m sorry, buddy,” Tony’s voice says sadly, and Peter makes a wounded sound from the back of his throat.

“Why?” he gasps. “Why would you put yourself as my AI? Why would you do this to me?” Peter demands desperately, anger and sadness coloring his words.

When the AI speaks again, Tony’s voice is sad.

“It was the only way I knew how to keep protecting you.”

TONY’S NOT THE BEST DAD AT FIRST REC LIST

I didn’t realize how much I loved this type of fic until I started looking through my bookmarks to put this list together. Seriously, there’s some really good reads here and I would love to see more authors explore this idea. 

TO CLARIFY- this post is tagged with mean!tony, but generally in these fics Tony is not intentionally being mean. For the most part, he’s in his pre-Iron Man characterization; a bit selfish, an alcoholic, and definitely needs some help. He has no idea how to be a dad, but he certainly has daddy issues. His solution in a lot of these fics on how to raise Peter is to keep himself at a distance because he really thinks that’s what would be best for Peter. When he eventually comes around and tries to be a parent he’s not very good at it in the beginning. It’s to be expected, but because the relationship in most of these fics starts out so unsteady, the growth between father and son is so emotionally engaging you are rooting for them the whole time.

New Grounds-Irondad and Spiderson

Peter Parker was a very smart guy. He was strong, kind-hearted and really self-sacrificing in nature. He was someone who made people love him after an hour of meeting him but Peter Parker was also very insecure. 

That happens when someone is being bullied their entire life. He is thankful for May and Ben for raising him but even he wonders sometimes what having parents felt like. Wanting to go home, your mom waiting for you, family dinners, maybe another sibling even and he felt lonely. A lot. 

But when Mr Stark started inviting him to the labs, things changed a bit. He got closer to his mentor, got closer to Pepper and Col. Rhodes and even Happy. He was smart, he knew that and it felt nice to connect with someone over a piece of Tech or the way he felt when Pepper made them eat food, scolding them for not taking care of themselves. 

Peter at some point got attached to Tony, saw him as his father, to be honest, and he knew it was wrong because he was trying to fill places in his life by filling in someone who might not want the roll.

But Tony cared about him a lot. He scolded him for being reckless, made him eat, made him go to bed on time, he spent time with him outside lab when he didn’t have to and he taught Peter how to be more efficient with technology, how to work in a lab, what to do, what not to do. 

He became important. 

Then Pepper was there. Sweet, caring, loving like Aunt May but somehow different. She was there to help him when he wasn’t feeling good. She was there with her warm presence and gentle smile, brushing his hair bashfully but telling him how proud she was of him when he won his decathlon competition. Pepper felt like Mom. 

And that made him want to cry because he knew they were not his parents but Peter wanted them to be. It was like a bullet through his heart every time he thought about it. 

So when Infinity war was over and he was back home, when he was sobbing in Mr Stark’s arms, holding him so tightly, afraid to let go, he hardly remembers the man shaking, tears streaming down his face as he kept on saying, ‘It was going to be okay. We are going to be fine, I promise.’

Meeting May next, Peter didn’t let go of her for hours, hands shaking when she or Tony was too far away. It took him time to get better, for the nightmares to go away and when they did when Peter started going back to school, he didn’t think fife could go downhill again. 

But that happened. 

He was at the Tower, with Pepper and Tony and they were having dinner but Peter knew they wanted to say something, their heartbeats were to fast and he could feel their nervousness. 

And then Tony finally said it, something that made him happy and made his stomach churn at the same time. 

“We are having a baby.” 

Peter smiled and hugged Pepper then Mr Stark, congratulating them and trying to not show how that made his heart squeeze. 

He felt his throat clog when he stood in front of the bathroom later. Tony and Pepper were going to be parents, real parents. They will have a child and they will have their own family so Peter knew he had to withdraw. He felt like he was choking, feeling like a child being jealous of a fetus but Peter had no right to be Jealous.
