[ID: The meme of Amy Lee from Evanescence in a music video, holding up a can of Pepsi-colored soda labeled, "Lies", and grinning ironically at the camera, while text that has been edited in below reads, surrounded by sparkles, "The Murderbot Diaries handles slavery well!", with the label of the soda showing that this statement is untrue. End ID.]
Martha Wells is doing the exact same slavery apologism that JK Rowling did, and then some. This book series is getting adapted by a trillion dollar company. It is way past time for people to start talking about the bigotry in this series, especially while Martha Wells is actively cheerleading the whitewashing of her own protagonist.
You cannot look at a series that has been killing off almost every single other enslaved construct/cyborg we meet, while the protagonist says they're mindless killing machines so they deserve it, with absolutely no pushback at all, even seven whole books in, and lie to people that this series handles slavery well.
It's getting adapted by Apple, the trillion dollar company, in a TV show that whitewashes the protagonist, and the white woman author is cheering this on.
You either start talking about the racism baked into these books, or at the very least, stop lying about them being progressive.
You are excited for Apple to be adapting this into a TV show so more people join the fandom? You better be prepared for the influx of people pointing out the racism that Martha Wells has baked in, because it has been apparent since book 1, and has not gotten better at all.
I don't even need to tell anyone who's ever criticized bigotry in fandom spaces what kind of responses they'll find in the replies. It's like clockwork.
It's so fucking funny that people who don't want me to criticize the slavery apologism and other bigotry in The Murderbot Diaries keep just brushing me off as "just not liking the story" and "just hating the characters"
Insult of your choice, I would fucking kill for Murderbot to be allowed to be happy. But we're not actually supposed to want Murderbot to be happy. We're supposed to want it to stay a meat shield for slave owners for fucking ever. A thing it is literally unable to not try to be.
"You just hate everything about the series" I hate the fucking racism. I hate the ableism and exorsexism.
I would love for Murderbot to get to be fucking happy and safe but because the author is racist and loves slavery apologism, that will literally never happen /and she thinks we're idiots for wanting that to happen/.
Murderbot will never get to wear the clothes it started at so longingly in the catalogue. Murderbot will never get to relax and write fanfiction for Sanctuary Moon and figure out that it can actually write its own new show if it wants.
Murderbot will literally never be allowed to have any value in itself for its own sake outside of using itself as a meat shield for slave owners.
Because it is programmed to be unable to want anything else, and isn't even fucking allowed to be aware of this fact to know just how deeply it has been enslaved heart mind and soul.
And we're supposed to be okay with all of this.
And people want to pretend I "just hate the characters" because I tell people that the series is racist and filled to the brim with slavery apologism.

Apple TV+ has officially picked up Murderbot, a 10-episode sci-fi drama series starring and executive produced by Emmy winner Alexander Skar
Congratulations to Martha Wells, who very much deserves that sweet Hollywood cash for her years in the midlist SFF author mines. A big fucking No Thank You to casting a cis white dude as Murderbot, I guess lest we miss out on a TV show reassuring us that cis white men are people too.
To dig into this a little further and evenhandedly: I actually think Skarsgård is a talented actor who's probably capable of doing a very good job with the character, including its agender identity, and this may be a perfectly watchable show.
Also, I don't care. The point of Murderbot is that it is viewed as a disposable non-person who can be both the victim and perpetrator of extreme violence on behalf of its owners, and that it has to learn to claim its own personhood and others have to learn to understand it as a person on its own terms, not their own. It's not that cis (Western) white men are NEVER subject to dehumanisation or viewed as disposable, it's that this happens *much less often* and there is also a wealth of media encouraging us to remember their personhood.
In terms of the reality of casting a TV show, it's true that you do often need a "name" star attached in a leading role to get it funded. HOWEVER, that doesn't mean they have to play the title character. I think an effective example here is the Wheel of Time TV show, where they got Rosamund Pike onboard and shifted the PoV of the story to give her character more airtime. Regardless, the original story centres around a group of young people and they still cast relatively unknown and very talented young actors, including Black and Indigenous actors, to play them. You could attach a famous white man to a Murderbot screen project and do a multiple-PoV story where we're seeing Murderbot from his PoV as well as its own.
But if the question of Murderbot's personhood is central to the story, as it should be, then casting someone *whose personhood would never be in question in our own world* to play it just...egregiously misses the point.
i think the funny thing about accusing those of us who don't like secunit's casting of "viewing being nonbinary as woman-lite only and you just dont like it because it looks too masc" is that the vast majority of the people bringing up concerns like. draw art of secunit or reblog it looking. masc. quite masc actually. very popular art of secunit is usually a masc depiction, and this accusation especially falls flat when you consider that security and the jobs that secunit does is often considered a very traditionally "masculine" job. i don't think people are arguing against ANY sort of masculine features - the frustration SEEMS to come from the fact that a popular cis WHITE man was chosen to be secunit's actor, instead of an actual nonbinary actor or a person of color (or god forbid...both)
my frustration is that whiteness, especially cis male whiteness, is viewed as the default - because murderbot doesn't describe itself and doesn't want to, and leaves the audience to fill in the blanks, and the studio IMMEDIATELY defaulted back to...whiteness. The studio could not create a show with a huge amount of racial diversity in it without taking the first sense of ambiguity it got and IMMEDIATELY filling in whiteness.
#also with the whole thing about secunit pondering how its oppressed by humans it kind of feels like. to me#'omg what if all these brown and black people were oppressing this white person...wouldnt that be crazyyyy dont you feel bad'#personally. to me#murderbot#secunit#fandom racism#anti live action remake#god i really hate when people bring online queer discourse into fandoms its not ABOUT secunit being 'too masc'#its ABOUT THE FACT THAT THEY CAST A WHITE MAN#like i would expect. a trans woman to play a trans woman and a trans man to play a trans man#why can i not expect a nonbinary actor to play a nonbinary character#because nonbinary actors Fucking Exist#and i feel like if say. a cis man got cast as a trans man character#and people were upset about it#the same people who accuse us of this would Not be saying “omg you just think all trans men are women lite!!”#“you just hate that hes masculine!!!”#like that sounds fucking ridiculous. thats what you sound like.#and again. the defaulting to whiteness#the murderbot diaries
Finally someone besides me saying it. Thank you.
This fandom is so racist they literally will not acknowledge the whitewashing if it would save their life.
If you give a shit about The Murderbot Diaries books and you consider yourself to be anti-racist it is in fact your moral obligation, especially if you're white, which I know most of you are, to criticize the blatant whitewashing and the white supremacy it holds up. If you literally won't even make a simple post on tumblr.com decrying whitewashing in a show made by a trillion dollar company, you don't ever get to pretend you're not racist. And yes this also demands you admit that Martha Wells is racist for joyously going along with and promoting the whitewashing and demanding you pay money for it.
oh i guess we've reached the point of fandom racism where people assume that whiteness not being the default is purely a sci-fi thing and that they HAD to cast a white male lead because no nonbinary actors or actors of color are "equipped for the role". how lovely
man, that Murderbot casting post is a real education in how some people will unironically go to "but aren't you assuming this famous cis man's gender?" and "have you considered that white men can be good at acting?" at the first opportunity
#do any of these people understand how systemic problems work?signs point to no

my father just found out about the murderbot casting and sent me like a dozen angry texts about it back to back, and his take is that for thematic reasons murderbot needs to not be a white man because it is constantly misjudged based on its appearance and assumed to have no real inner life or personhood, which is (1) very insightful, (2) not actually a take i have seen elsewhere in The Discourse so far (though i have not gone out of my way to look for The Discourse tbf), and (3) not remotely what i expected a not-very-online 60something cishet white guy not ordinarily given to literary analysis to say about it??? really caught me off-guard and now i'm also annoyed i didn't think of it. like, i, the litcrit queer am over here going "idk i just think it's the least interesting choice you could make" and he's thinking about the subtextual resonances and/or ways of communicating the marginalized status of a secunit to the audience on a visceral level. goddammit.
Tell him thanks for me. If you missed the memo, Martha Wells has been saying since 2019 that Murderbot is a person of color. And it is shown as having dark skin in all of the official art. So it's not even just ~the least interesting choice~ it's active whitewashing.
Isnad is expanding to sponsor forty more students!
If you are unaware, @isnadfoundation is a grassroots initiative in Gaza that aims to provide students with a study room with an electric supply, internet access, and stationery supplies so that university students can pursue their degrees remotely. Visit their page to see videos and photos of their student activities!
They are currently taking in 30 students, but they aim to expand. This goal is ambitious, but it is worth it so as not to turn down any more applicants than they absolutely must.
With this new goal, it is vital to collect the increased rent for the month of June as soon as possible.
As of today, ten days remain until rent collection.

One-Esk and Murderbot meet in the waiting lobby for Robo-Therapy
(…specifically rage counseling )
Probably two of my favorite robot/ai/construct protagonists in literature! Though I have a lot. (What’s up Culture shipminds…)
Creation notes:
A pattern I’ve been noticing is that a lot of these robots are very traumatized, very angry, and don’t like talking about their feelings. I was gonna originally make this short comic about One-Esk (aka Breq) and Murderbot on the first day of group therapy for rage counseling and it would just be a bunch of shots of them sitting in silence cuz neither of them like talking about their feelings but, uh…. the shots were just a lot and the series of events wasn’t really flowing right so I scrapped that idea in favor of not having to draw a zillion backgrounds. Still wound up taking a stupidly long time to create a product that feels… underwhelming. I really like how Breq turned out but I just couldn’t get the hair or costume design on MB to really fit the corpo-futuristic spacer asthetic I was going for, while still capturing that social-anxiety-comfort-hoodie energy. (Was originally contemplating having a shot of MB pulling hoodie strings closed over their face in one shot but wound up scrapping that idea as well.) Cannonicallly, MB should probably be in all dark blues and blacks, but the colors just weren’t working so I went with yellow instead. Idk. Maybe it’s a loaner hoodie from one of MB’s humans.
Here’s a shot I never wound up using:
Anyways! I hope this made you smile if you like one or both of these series! 😊
Post script: if you like Martha Wells Murderbot Diaries, you should definitely check out Ann Leckie’s Ancillary Justice trilogy, or vice versa. More angry traumatized non-binary human-ai constructs for all! Mega-latestage-capitolist dystopia, or xenophobic -imperialist-socialist empire? Sentient space ships? C’mon. Just read both series u know you’ll love it.
