Iris's red pupils looked down at her metallic hands.
"It's been... difficult. I usually wear my sunglasses and gloves to hide these changes. The easiest thing to do is lie and say I have sensitive eyes and hands, that even indoor light is too much for my eyes and that the gloves are the only texture I can handle on my hands. So far everyone I've told that to has accepted that as fact. I tend to go for walks at night too, less people out and about. I usually don't wear the sunglasses or gloves then and just wander the woods." She sighed a bit.
Jane hums.
"Have they caused you any other issues? Is there any pain at all?"
So far, Jane felt that Iris was feeling isolated, but it was only an assumption and not a diagnosis as of yet. Jane leaned forward. While it was hard to look at. She was getting used to it. Her eyes scanning the robotic eyes of Iris. It wasn't pity. It was sympathy.
Iris was silent for a moment.
"Sometimes there's phantom pains, but the bigger issue- the reason I'm here- is the way I've been acting. Some of the Joja phrases I say without thinking, the way I tend to avoid... everyone, but especially Maru... I don't really know how to act natural any more."

Iris was silent for a moment.
"Thank you, Jane. I appreciate that you're upset on my behalf. I wish there was a way to go back and change it, but... this is what I have to live with, now. I can't let anyone else go through this too... especially not Jack."
"How have you been living with these, additions?" This was a very delicate subject. Jane didn't want to make Iris too upset.
Jane's first sessions were normally more about getting comfortable. It was nice to see a patient just jump in like this, but. She hoped Iris wasn't pushing herself too much to share.
Iris flinched a bit at the gasp, moved back from Jane's hand. Her eyes showed no emotion, though she did frown.
"I... you're right. I need to warn him. I'll see about getting him a place in Stardew Valley with me." her metallic hands fiddled with each other.
"I can't let this happen to him, too..."
Jane didn't mean to cause this response. She honestly didn't mean to respond the way she did. Even if it was a very human response, it clearly made Iris upset. But she understood. She moved her hand away to rest on her lap. She sat there quietly to think on her words.
"I'm sorry if my reaction upset you. It was jarring, but I promise you didn't frighten me. It was, the idea someone could be so cruel."
Iris was silent for a moment.
"Thank you, Jane. I appreciate that you're upset on my behalf. I wish there was a way to go back and change it, but... this is what I have to live with, now. I can't let anyone else go through this too... especially not Jack."
Iris hesitated again. Then, she sighed.
"Because he'd be angry at what Joja did to me. He doesn't have any other source of income, I don't want anything bad to happen to him or his girls. But if he knew what they did... he'd probably try and quit on the spot. With nothing else lined up." Another pause.
"Joja... broke me. They took things from me that I can never get back. I wasn't sure how to go about saying this... but... well, maybe it'd be easier to show you." Despite how nervous she seemed, her hands weren't shaking. The movement of her removing her gloves was fluid and sure, revealing that her hands up to her wrist were robotic. Her sunglasses were slowly pulled off next, black voids with red dots that stared unblinkingly at Jane.
"To remove eye strain and fatigue, as well as hand pain, they gave me these... 'upgrades'. If Jack found out about this, he'd be angry. He'd act irrationally."
Jane couldn't stop her reaction. She was horrified. Her brows knitted together and her eyes were open as wide as they could be. An audible gasp escaped her lips. Jane covers her mouth to make the sound less sharp. Perhaps even hide her harsh reaction. She didn't mean to respond so harshly, but.
It was such a shock to her system
It was cruel.
It was inhuman. Not just inhumane, but inhuman to do this to someone.
Sorry wouldn't cover it. She knew she had no part it in, but she wanted to badly to apologize for how heartless they were.
Jane took a moment to compose herself.
Jane reached out, offering a hand to Iris, taking a breath.
"I," She takes another breath. "I think, for his sake, it would be best to warn him. I don't normally do this, but I honestly believe if they would do this to you, they would do it to him."
Iris hesitated.
"No. He wouldn't. He'd be glad to know I'm... relatively... ok." she began.
"He has two daughters, twin girls. They're great kids. Their mom walked out after they were born, but he does his best with them. I'd visit often, and I'm sure they wonder where I am, too..."
"Why don't you call him then?"
It seems like Jack would love to hear from her. At least, if Jane's assumption was right. Jane took another drink of her water and set it aside.

Iris moved her head so it was clear she was staring at her hands, folded in her lap.
"I haven't. I'm... nervous to. He's great, but that Joja programming in my brain tells me not to waste his time at work." Her hands changed, turning to fists.
"I hate Joja. They took so much from me."
Jane hummed. That warm smile softening.
"Do you think he would be upset with you if you called?"
Iris hesitated. "I hate them. I hate everything about Joja, and everything they've done to me. I hate that I keep saying these things. I'm not there anymore, I'm free from their influence. I had a friend there, Jack was his name. And he's still trapped there. I feel horrible for leaving him behind..." Iris trailed off.
Jane was at least glad she hated it. It mean she wouldn't need to disillusion Iris to, well, Joja propaganda.
"Do you keep in contact with Jack since you left?"
Iris thought for a bit, then sighed.
"Truthfully, it's more like... the town has been worried about me. And I understand why. I've been saying things that have been ingrained into my brain from my time at Joja, and it clearly worries them. Stuff like 'when there's work to be done, resting can wait' or 'can't talk, on the clock'. My time working there was terrible, nothing short of traumatic, honestly." She sighed.
"These sayings are so ingrained in my head that I just say them without thinking. And that's not even the worst Joja can be..." She shuddered slightly.
Ah, Joja. Jane had been reading articles lately about them, and what she read wasn't particularly in their favor. From the sounds of it Jane had a lot of indoctrination to work through.
"I see. What do you think about those sayings? Now that you've had other's perspectives on them."
Iris saw the door open, her eyes hidden behind the sunglasses she always wore.
"Yes, that's me. You can just call me Iris. It's nice to meet you, Ms. Doe." She walked into the office, taking a seat on the couch. She fiddled a bit with the gloves on her hands, and despite being inside, still kept her sunglasses on.
She took a few deep breaths while waiting for Jane to sit to begin the appointment.
"Please, call me Jane."
Jane closes the door softly once Iris steps inside. She takes calm bot confident steps as she makes her way over to the mini-fridge.
The space was pretty cozy, but that wasn't too strange for a therapist office. A few pictures on the wall of what was probably family and other patients. A few paintings here and there, as well as her certificates.
Jane opens the mini fridge, looking through it and speaking as she does. "Would you like something to eat or drink? I have plenty here."
Iris shook her head.
"No thank you, Jane." she said. She moved her head to look around, noticing the paintings and photos.
Mayor Lewis and the townsfolk were right, she probably did need therapy... but how much should she say during a first appointment? She didn't want to go too far with why she was there...
Jane grabbed a mini water bottle from the mini fridge and went to join Iris on the couch. She makes herself comfortable, taking a drink before looking at Iris. "From what you told me over the phone, you said you got a few concerns. Would you like to talk about them? Or, would you just like to spend today getting comfortable?"
Iris thought for a bit, then sighed.
"Truthfully, it's more like... the town has been worried about me. And I understand why. At the suggestion of Mayor Lewis, Iris stood at the office of a therapist- her therapist.
Jane Doe was the name on the door. Frowning, Iris remembered the conversation:
Iris, do you have a moment?
What is it, Mayor Lewis?
I've been getting lots of concerned comments from other residents of Pelican Town. I think it might be best if you saw a therapist. Dr. Harvey has a colleague in Zuzu City who is accepting new patients.
Mayor Lewis hadn't said what the concerned comments were, but Iris had a feeling it was based on the mid-level Joja employee slogans that had been drilled so deep in her brain she found herself saying them without thinking.
The shock she saw when she first said 'when there's work to be done, resting can wait' seemed evidence enough in her mind.
Jane was just jamming quietly in her office when she looked at the time.
Her new patient should be here soon. She closes her laptop and takes out her earbuds as she stands up. They are left on her desk as she heads to the door to her office.
It would be good to check if-
Oh.
Jane blinks once.
She wasn't expecting to find someone standing outside of her door. Jane's gives a warm smile once her brain took a second to process what was happening. "Hello, you must be Ms. Harell."
She steps side and motions inside. "Would you like to come in?"
