The merry tune from the jukebox in the corner was in full swing, spilling out of the Stardrop Saloon and echoing through the town square. The moon was high in the sky, accompanied by twinkling stars and fireflies. This summer night was a hot one, but everyone seemed to be in good spirits as they danced and ate and drank.
Shane was in his usual spot at the end of the bar, nursing a Joja cola. Ever since he had met you, he made it his personal goal to completely quit drinking. Now, he knew that the shit they put in these colas was probably just as bad for him, but he knew it made you happy. And seeing you happy made him happy.
So here he was, sipping from the can, watching everyone laugh and talk around him. He wasn’t much for dancing, eyes sidling over to Robin and Demetrius getting down to the upbeat tune on the dance floor. A small smile tugged at his lips as he watched them together, as if they were the only ones in the room. That’s how he always felt when he was around you.
Speaking of you, he scanned the saloon with his brow furrowed. You had mentioned you were going to make your rounds and say hello to everyone, but that had been a while ago. Shane ground his teeth and finished off his cola, knowing that he shouldn’t get possessive. You were an absolute treasure to him, and he didn’t want to scare you away. You were your own person. He didn’t own you.
That disposition shifted when your bubbling, infectious laugh traveled across the saloon and settled over him. His head whipped around and zeroed in on you by the pool table, head thrown back in laughter at some joke Sam had just told. God, you were perfect. Shane’s eyes traveled hungrily over your face, admiring how you looked in this candid moment. He wanted to keep it in his mind, forever.
However, his cheeks reddened with fury as he saw Sebastian move closer to you, placing a hand at the small of your back. Shane knew that move. Every guy knew that move. Shane’s eyes narrowed to slits as Sebastian not-so-slyly slid behind you, playing his touch off as a polite gesture to move past you. But Shane wasn’t stupid. He watched for your reaction, and got even angrier when he saw none. You weren’t fazed at all. Did you….like Sebastian? No, that wasn’t possible. Shane was dating you.
He hadn’t realized he was crushing the empty can of cola in his hand until the metal dug into his palm. He forcefully exhaled and let it go, dropping it to the bar with a tinny clang.
He didn’t own you. He didn’t own you. He didn’t own you.
Shane felt his feet moving beneath him long before he made the decision to confront you and Sebastian by the pool table. As he neared you, his heart skipped a beat as you met his eyes with an excited smile.
“Hi!” you said cheerfully, skirting around the table to grab his hand. Shane blinked in surprise, staring at you with a dumb expression on his face. He would never get used to the way you looked at him.
“H-hi,” he replied, swallowing nervously. “It’s getting late.”
“Oh,” you said, glancing behind him to look at the clock. “I hadn’t even realized. Now that you mention it, I am exhausted.”
Shane felt his fingernails digging into his palms as he glared at Sebastian, who was watching you with half-lidded eyes. God, he wanted to wipe that self-satisfied smirk right off his smug face.
“I’ll see you guys later!” you said, twiddling your fingers at Sam and Sebastian. “Tell Abigail I missed her tonight!”
“Will do!” Sam said as he waved back, and then he pointed finger guns at Shane. “See you at work tomorrow, buddy.”
“See you,” Shane grumbled, placing a protective arm around your shoulders as he led you through the saloon. You said another handful of goodbyes to the rest of the villagers, and finally the two of you were alone, walking back to your farm. Shane was silent, too busy fuming at the image of Sebastian staring at your ass as you walked by him.
“You alright?” you asked him, breaking Shane out of his thoughts.
“Yeah,” he growled, pulling you tighter against his torso.
“You sure?”
He snorted out of his nose. “You still like me, right? You still….you still want to be with me?”
You stopped walking, tugging his hand. “What are you talking about? Of course I still want to be with you.”
He looked back at you, his heart skipping another beat as you stood there before him, covered in silvery moonlight and fireflies. You were perfect. He would never, ever find anything that could ever compare to you.
“You’re perfect,” he murmured.
You tilted your head at him with a lilting smile on your face. “What’s going on, Shane? Really.”
Shane pulled on your arm and wrapped you in a hug, pressing his nose into your hair and smelling. He didn’t want to let you go. Not for anything, not for anyone.
“Sebastian was getting too friendly,” Shane finally murmured into your hair. “I’m sorry.”
“You don’t have anything to worry about,” you said into his chest, voice muffled by his shirt. “I like you. I’m with you. Nothing will change that.”
“Yeah,” he replied, pulling back and looking at you again. “Thank you.”
While Shane was reassured of your feelings for him, it didn’t stop him from tightly gripping your hand in his as he walked you the rest of the way back to your farm. It didn’t stop him from giving you a feverish kiss, the sweet summer air clouding his senses.
He was in love with you. There was no doubt about it.
