Hospital spoilers btw: blood isn't sorted by sex, it's sorted by type. The sex of the blood donor doesn't factor in at all when receiving a transfusion, and you will not be harmed by receiving blood from a donor whose sex is different than yours. Saying this because it's another misconception that I've heard.

I think this is one of those things where folks are so used to it that they just sort of assume there must be a good reason for it. But the only reason for your sex to be on your ID is if your legal rights differ based on your sex. Like, it would be important for your ID to say F or M if, for instance, one of those categories was allowed to open a bank account but the other one wasn't. But as far as I can tell, we have mostly decided that legal rights should pertain to everyone. Which means that sex documentation really is just a throwback to a time when women were not considered full legal persons and therefore their legal status had to be officially displayed on their ID in order to maintain that distinction.

Honestly, the only major thing I can think of that still strictly legally requires sex distinction is the military draft. Which, A) still doesn't require sex be recorded on your drivers license, B) could be made sex-neutral, or C) could be abolished instead.

Further context: Durham city council (Reform UK) cut funding and support for Pride. The Durham Miner's Association and other trade unions raised enough money for Durham Pride 2026 to go ahead - a direct call back to when Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) raised money for mining communities when Margaret Thatcher seized union funding during the miner strikes of 1984-85.

At the 1985 Labour party meet, the motion to support LGBT rights as a party was passed due to a block vote from mining unions.

Stephen Guy, the chair of the Durham Miners’ Association, said that when it became apparent Durham Pride was under threat, he took it upon himself to “encourage the trade union movement to step up and do the right thing, and stand shoulder to shoulder with the LGBT+ community […] They not only raised funds for us, but came to our communities, uplifted our spirits when they were down, and showed their solidarity.”

I also want to remind everyone that self diagnosis is valid because Black people will get “diagnosed” with “Oppositional Defiant Disorder” at the drop of a hat, but especially if they’re autistic. Autistic. Fucking autistic. I have a friend who is literally the sweetest man in existence. Family man, absolute nerd who works in IT, obsessed with cartoons and will cry over a dog. Very clearly on the spectrum (we say that as someone on the spectrum). Did he get diagnosed with autism? Nope. Oppositional Defiant Disorder. I want you to look up the “symptoms” of that disorder and look me in my eyes and tell me that’s not racism.

Self diagnosis is fucking valid because our health care system is fucking broken, beyond the cost and shitty insurance. Do not hitch your entire existence in mental health to this kind of a system, because it will betray you at some point. I’m not saying don’t get help. But just remember to be so careful bowing to our fascist mental health overlords.

Why would the real killer hero have kept the weapon on his person and traveled two states over while carrying it and a manifesto in his bag, conveniently turning the crime into a federal matter? The same guy whose bag they found in a park, filled with monopoly money? Why did the police turn off their bodycams, take Luigi's stuff, drive a block away, turn their bodycams back on, go back into the restaurant, and then arrest him?

From the moment of his arrest, even left-of-center media has been presuming his guilt without examining anything (e.g. calling him "the killer" instead of "alleged" or "accused") and then when I say he didn't do it, the nearest person chimes in with some quip that tells me they think he did do it but should go free anyway. Don't get me wrong, I would have the same attitude if he had done it. But he didn't. It makes me feel like the only sane person in the world, even among my staunchly leftist friends.

I actually do think we should discourage women from becoming housewives. Do not become financially dependent on a man. That's how a lot of women ended up dead over the years. A man gets violent suddenly and you have to choose between homelessness or potentially dying at his hand because you have an enormous gap in your resume and no degrees or certifications or anything that will help you pursue a career that will allow you to be financially independent. He owns your bank account. His name is probably the one on the car. Try and leave and he can report it stolen. Where will you go then?

And if you do become a housewife, take steps to protect yourself. Make sure you’re legally married, for starters; stay-at-home girlfriends have very little legal recourse to claim their partner’s assets in a breakup. Make sure your name is on the house deed/rental agreement, and have your car in your name, even if your spouse is paying for it. Have your spouse transfer money every month into an account solely in your name, so you can buy yourself things without needing permission, but also so you can save up to leave if needed.

If your spouse fights you on any of this, then don’t quit your job. The tradwife to poverty pipeline is real, and so is financial abuse.

I see so many arguments over what is and isn't "good queer representation" that really just boil down to "y'all are actually arguing over matters of taste and genre preference, which is incredibly subjective and personal."

Worldbuilding where being queer is normalized and queerphobia has no impact on the plot? THAT'S FINE. Worldbuilding that includes queerphobia and tackles the effects of it as part of the story? THAT'S ALSO FINE.

Low-stakes queer romcom where the characters are fluffy and cute? THAT'S COOL. Messy queer drama with toxic people who fuck each other over and clash repeatedly? THAT'S ALSO COOL.

Stories that center the characters' queerness, show a trans character's transition, and are about the queerness as much as the rest of the plot? AWESOME. Stories where the characters' queerness isn't treated as a big deal, and have trans characters whose transition happened before the story entirely? ALSO AWESOME.

You may PREFER one thing or another, but it is actually good to have all these things. It's about variety. It's about queer characters being allowed to exist without censorship. It's about queer artists getting to make things without being told we're a "niche issue" or "adult content." It's about having as many goddamn cakes as the bakery can produce.

At the end of the day, I'd prefer a media landscape with fifty pieces of problematic queer representation over a media landscape with one single piece of queer representation that's trying (and usually failing) to be 100% perfect for everything and everyone.

There is this idea that transmasculine experience can be simplified, and that there is no complexity to it that is worth analysis or care. This idea touches anything and everything, from something as inconsequential as a fandom headcanon, to something as heavy as how we discuss our oppression.

The image of a trans man is a simple one: A white, able bodied man who was once a lesbian and is now straight, who has taken Testosterone, gotten top and bottom surgeries, presents masculine 100% of the time, has a good paying job, and is only affected by trans bills in the sense that it would mean he would have to go to the bathroom in a different place, or he might need to fight harder for his prescription. There is nothing unique about this, his relationship to masculinity and femininity are the expected ones. He is essentially a cis man who used to be a girl.

As a result, trans male oppression does not need to be considered a complex interaction between societal expectations of assigned femininity in contrast with current masculine identity, combined with the act of transition and nature of trans identity. No, it can just be simplified to trans = oppressed, and man = privilege. There is no need for deeper though.

When a trans man is feminine online, it can just be simplified to the fact that this person is not actually a man. Trans men are simple creatures who yearn to be masculine 100% of the time. They are only trans enough when they present in this simple way.

No, this "cis" male character cannot be a trans man because that character's story is a complex exploration of how the expectations of masculinity are suffocating. Any other trans headcanon is okay, but trans men never experience masculinity in the context of forced expectation, because the lives of trans men are simple, and for them, masculinity is wholly good all the time.

There is no need to specifically platform trans men on this topic, because their relationship to it is uncomplicated. There is no need to say "especially trans men" when talking about sex work, or reproductive rights, or discrimination, or kink, or violence, or exploitation, because transmasculine experience is a simple one that can be explained in a single footnote against the other, more unique and kaleidoscopic experiences of all other gender experiences. Trans men can be marginalized in a literal sense because they are uncomplex, and unimportant because everything they go through, every else goes through in a much more vivid way.

And then no one believes trans men when we talk about ourselves, because they know better. Because it is so simple to know us, that not much thought need to be put into thinking about us, and not much listening needs to be done when listening to us.
