AQUARIUS THE ALCHEMIST ! 

Aquarians are often very clever and curious, with a proclivity for experimentation and insight, for which I chose to depict the sign as the Alchemist. But as both an Air and winter sign, Aquarians can be cold, and struggle to form emotional connections with those around them.

Aquarius is ruled by the ‘ice giant’ planet, Uranus, which is fitting for both their winter timing and detached personality, but perhaps furthers the misconception that Aquarius is a water sign. The ancient Greek god Uranus was a Titan; ancestor of the Olympus gods and ruler of the aether: the ‘upper air’ of the skies. 

Regarding my depiction of Aquarius in this illustration; like the other air signs, I wanted her to feature wings, and be accompanied by features of outer space. For Aquarius, the winter air sign, I chose to focus upon the cold night; aka, the moon and stars. For this series, I wanted to mix up high-fantasy character archetypes with modernity, but for Aquarius I wanted to evoke the traditional imagery of the water-bearer and style her as an ancient Grecian, ft a draping toga-like dress, simple metal jewellery, and dark curling hair.

Felt like drawing more swords!!! Though really that’s a constant mood for me. xD

I’ve done a few versions of Virgo’s sword before, but I was never totally satisfied with them, either from an aesthetic or functional standpoint. Obviously there’s a bit of leeway when it comes to functionality in fantasy weapons, but I also want my designs to suit the wielder as best as possible, so I took another swing at this one (ha).

I think I finally matched the balance of elegance and power of Virgo herself for the sword’s design, as well as finding ways to better incorporate her symbol. What you’re seeing here is essentially Virgo’s “battle mode”, where she cinches her dress for better mobility. She always fights while blindfolded, borrowing from the phrase “justice is blind”.
