~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The first time Kylo Ren let you stay the night in his quarters, he didn’t look at you once afterward.
He stood beside the enormous viewport of his chamber aboard the Finalizer, hands clasped behind his back while stars bled silver across the darkness of space. You sat tangled in black sheets that still smelled faintly of smoke and metal and him, watching the rigid line of his shoulders.
You had learned quickly that Kylo Ren only softened in fragments.
Never in daylight. Never where anyone could see.
“You should leave before morning briefing,” he said flatly.
The words shouldn’t have hurt anymore.
Because only an hour earlier, his forehead had rested against yours while his breathing steadied after kissing you like he was starving. His fingers had stroked absently through your hair while exhaustion dragged at him. In those moments, he held you close enough to convince you there was something real buried beneath the armor and anger.
And you became invisible again.
“Right,” you murmured quietly, climbing from the bed.
He still didn’t look at you.
That was how it always worked.
To the First Order, you were Commander Y/N — brilliant strategist, terrifyingly calm under pressure, the woman General Hux hated because Supreme Leader Snoke trusted your judgment more than his.
You were the woman he summoned in the middle of the night.
The one who understood his silence.
The one who never asked too much from him.
At least, that’s what he believed.
You met Kylo Ren three years earlier.
Back then, he had been impossible to read.
Cold. Volatile. Dangerous.
Not because you were fearless — but because you recognized loneliness when you saw it.
You remembered the first mission you worked together. A rebellion outpost hidden deep in the Mid Rim. Hux had spent the entire briefing trying to undermine Kylo’s authority while officers sat frozen in terrified silence.
A console shattered against the wall through the Force, sparks raining across the floor as officers scrambled backward.
And somehow, you had been the only one unimpressed.
“You done?” you’d asked calmly.
The room had gone silent.
Kylo slowly turned toward you beneath the black mask.
“You’re either brave,” he said darkly, “or incredibly stupid.”
You crossed your arms. “You broke the console before the briefing ended. Now someone has to fix it.”
For a long moment, you thought he might kill you.
Instead, something strange happened.
And from then on, you became one of the only people in the galaxy who spoke to him like a person instead of a weapon.
You learned the rhythms of his anger.
You learned when to leave him alone.
You learned that he slept terribly after missions and became quieter afterward, almost distant, as if guilt clung to him like a shadow he couldn’t escape.
You learned he hated being touched unexpectedly.
But eventually, he started reaching for you first.
A hand brushing your wrist in empty corridors.
His presence appearing beside you during late-night strategy sessions.
The way he’d stand too close without seeming aware of it.
Then one night, after a disastrous mission that left half a battalion dead, he arrived at your quarters bleeding from a wound across his shoulder.
You helped him remove the armor in silence.
His face was pale with exhaustion.
“You should’ve gone to the med bay,” you muttered.
“So you came to me instead?”
His dark eyes lifted to yours then.
Heavy. Tired. Vulnerable.
That single word changed everything.
Because afterward, when you cleaned the blood from his skin, he kissed you.
Like he didn’t know how not to.
That should’ve been the moment you stopped yourself from falling in love with him.
Instead, it was the moment you truly began to.
Your relationship — if it could even be called that — became something hidden between battles and stars.
Kylo would appear at your door without warning.
Sometimes so exhausted he barely spoke at all.
And every time, you let him in.
You told yourself it was enough.
The nights he pulled you against his chest afterward.
The rare moments he let himself rest beside you.
The way he trusted you with parts of himself nobody else ever saw.
But over time, the imbalance became impossible to ignore.
Because you knew everything about him.
You knew he hated thunderstorms because they reminded him of the temple burning.
You knew he still woke from nightmares.
You knew he secretly listened when you rambled about strategy because your voice calmed him.
You knew he liked when you traced your fingers through his hair even though he’d never admit it aloud.
Kylo never asked questions about you.
Sometimes it felt like he only came to you because you were convenient.
Someone who expected nothing.
And maybe that was your fault.
Because you never forced him to face what this was becoming.
The breaking point came months later.
A victory celebration filled the Finalizer after a successful campaign.
Officers crowded the command deck lounge drinking expensive Core World liquor while music echoed faintly through the massive chamber.
You stood beside Captain Phasma discussing fleet reports when laughter across the room caught your attention.
Kylo stood near the viewport speaking with one of Snoke’s advisors.
Cold. Composed. Untouchable.
And beside him stood a young officer practically draped over his arm.
She laughed at something he said.
Your stomach twisted painfully.
Phasma noticed your expression immediately.
“Jealousy doesn’t suit you,” she remarked coolly.
Because you had no right to be jealous.
Kylo never promised you anything.
Never claimed you publicly.
To him, this arrangement was simple.
So why did it feel like your chest was splitting open watching another woman touch him?
Hours later, Kylo arrived at your quarters.
Like nothing had happened.
He removed his gloves slowly while you stood near the desk pretending to review tactical reports.
“You left the celebration early,” he said.
His eyes narrowed slightly.
The question almost made you laugh.
“What’s wrong?” you echoed softly.
“You’ve barely spoken to me all evening.”
At the man you loved so much it physically hurt sometimes.
And suddenly you were tired.
Tired of pretending this didn’t matter.
Tired of acting like you could survive on scraps of affection.
“You can’t keep doing this to me.”
Something flickered across his face.
“What are you talking about?”
“This.” Your voice shook despite your efforts to steady it. “You come here whenever you want. You sleep in my bed. You kiss me like I matter to you and then the next morning I’m just another officer again.”
His jaw tightened immediately.
“I know what I am to you, Kylo.”
His expression darkened at the name.
Only you still called him that.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“I’m your sneaky little secret,” you whispered. “Someone you go to when you need comfort. Someone convenient.”
His eyes flashed angrily. “You think that’s all this is to me?”
“I don’t know what this is to you because you never tell me anything!”
The words cracked from you before you could stop them.
You rarely yelled at him.
“You don’t ask about me,” you continued shakily. “You don’t stay. You don’t—” Your voice broke. “You don’t love me.”
The silence afterward was devastating.
Because he didn’t deny it.
You nodded slowly, tears burning behind your eyes.
Kylo stepped toward you immediately. “Y/N—”
For the first time since knowing him, genuine panic crossed his face.
“Don’t walk away from me.”
A bitter laugh escaped you. “You walked away first.”
Then you left him standing alone in your quarters.
Kylo didn’t sleep that night.
The absence of you became unbearable faster than he expected.
Your quarters stayed dark.
You stopped accompanying him during tactical briefings unless necessary.
Conversations became clipped. Professional.
You stopped looking at him the same way.
The softness disappeared.
Kylo discovered very quickly that he hated a galaxy where you no longer smiled at him.
Stormtroopers scattered faster than usual.
Hux wisely avoided speaking unless necessary.
But none of it fixed the hollow feeling clawing through him.
Because for years, Kylo convinced himself he didn’t need love.
Anakin Skywalker proved that.
So he kept you at arm’s length even while craving your presence constantly.
He told himself what you had was enough.
Except now you were gone, and he realized with terrifying clarity that you had become the only place in the galaxy where he felt remotely human.
Three weeks later, disaster struck.
A Resistance ambush near the Anoat sector went catastrophically wrong.
Your battalion became trapped under heavy fire after communications failed.
Kylo arrived with reinforcements to find chaos.
Smoke filled the battlefield.
Blaster fire lit the darkness.
And through the Force, he felt you.
His heart nearly stopped.
He tore through the battlefield violently, stormtroopers struggling to keep pace as he searched desperately.
Collapsed beside destroyed machinery, blood staining your uniform.
Everything inside him snapped.
The Force exploded outward.
Resistance soldiers were thrown back violently as Kylo dropped beside you.
Your eyes fluttered weakly open.
For the first time in years, real fear consumed him.
His gloved hand pressed against your wound desperately.
“You’re alright,” he said immediately, voice unsteady. “You’re alright.”
You gave a faint, pained laugh. “You sound terrified.”
The words slipped out before he could stop them.
Your expression changed weakly.
Kylo leaned closer, forehead pressing against yours as blaster fire echoed in the distance.
“You are not dying,” he said fiercely. “Do you understand me?”
“No.” His voice cracked. “No, don’t do this.”
You stared at him in shock.
Because Kylo Ren never sounded fragile.
Yet here he was trembling beside you.
“I can’t lose you,” he whispered.
His eyes were shining with panic and something deeper. Something raw.
“I tried to convince myself this wasn’t real,” he admitted shakily. “I tried to believe I could keep you separate from everything else because if I loved you…” He swallowed hard. “If I loved you, you could destroy me.”
Tears burned behind your eyes.
His hand cupped your face carefully.
“But you already have,” he whispered.
Not desperately like before.
Every emotion he buried for years poured into that kiss.
When he pulled back, his forehead remained against yours.
“I love you,” Kylo said quietly, like the confession terrified him. “I love you so much it makes me furious.”
You laughed weakly through tears.
“That might be the least romantic confession ever.”
A breath of laughter escaped him too.
Then his expression hardened as he looked toward incoming medics.
“You are never scaring me like that again.”
His thumb brushed beneath your eye gently.
And for the first time since meeting him, Kylo Ren looked at you openly.
