i was just watching a video in which a man asked the ai claude how it felt about its use in military target selection. here’s something that bothered me about this, while the ai says more than once that it is “troubled” by its use, it does not take any level of accountability for what is done with the information it gives. this kind of creates a paradox to my mind, where the ai, being at its core a tool that’s being used, can’t take responsibility and the humans who are just watching and using whatever the ai suggests without thought wash their hands of any claim to wrong doing because “well it was really the ai choosing”. so whose fault is it?? who do we hold responsible for the wrong doings occurring if both parts of the decision making process seem to refuse to see how they might be the one causing the harm

I'm replaying most of bloodborne and in hindsight it's kinda obvious what's the deal with Gherman and the doll. She's supposed to mirror the attitude of the Greats : "the Greats lose their child, and yearn for a surrogate". Maria was Gherman's child (figuratively), and when she killed herself he "yearned for a surrogate" to cope and made the doll.

The line about "using the doll, if it pleases you" is creepy as fuck but it also reflect the general attitude of the Church/academy/hunters toward the offspring of the Greats, where they help the process only to try andgain something for it to serve their own hubris.

I don't see this line as Gherman being a sex pest (still a reasonable reading considering of it's phrased) but more like an old man broken by grief and regrets that has grown so disillusioned by all the atrocities comitted by himself and others around him that he cannot imagine a child growing up without being exploited one way or the other. He's trapped in the nightmare and is unable to imagine someone existing out of it. The night can't stop as long as the hunt isn't finished, and Gherman's hunt never came to an end.
