Ooh I'm such a sucker for WillLeno. Never written hanahaki before so this is a first, I hope it's good enough... since the haver of the disease wasn't specified, I'm going with Leno because I enjoy having him suffer
It starts after the Frozen Four. Ryan's still crying hours later in his hotel room when the nausea comes. He barely makes it to the bathroom and ends up vomiting in the sink. Not ideal, but at least it isn't the floor. He thinks it's just from the stress and the tears, but is proven wrong as soon as the first petals land on the white porcelain. He curses under his breath just as Gabe runs in, looking a little pale. He doesn't ask questions at first, just rubs Ryan's back until he stops coughing all the petals up.
They stare at each other for a while until Gabe does ask, the standard question of "who is it?". Ryan mutters something about Will, staring back down at the sink. The edges of some of the petals are covered with blood and bile, a gruesome beauty. Gabe makes a small knowing noise, but doesn't press. Just squeezes Ryan's shoulder and gives him a hug. It helps a little bit, after the tournament. Comforting, but it's still unnerving, knowing that he's got petals in his lungs.
Ryan barely looks at Will for the next couple of days, like he thinks he'll start coughing if he does. He knows it doesn't work like that, but he'd rather not acknowledge it at all. Any attempts Will makes to talk to him are shut down by Ryan being moody. He, like everyone else, just chalks it up to the Frozen Four. A couple guys had been a bit off since. Gabe does his best to take care of Ryan. He's sweet like that, but there's just not much one can do about hanahaki.
Next time they're at a party, Ryan drinks too much. He always does, but it's usually not enough to make him vomit, but it sure is tonight. The first gag sends him running to whoever's bathroom it is. It's empty, thank god. Someone holds his hair back. He assumes Gabe followed him in, doesn't think about it much until he recovers and looks up. It's Will, and he's staring at the petals that came with the ejected alcohol. Will doesn't ask, just hands Ryan a tissue so he can wipe his mouth and watches while he does.
He doesn't ask until the next morning, when Ryan wakes up in his dorm and finds Will awake on the other bed. It doesn't take much to find out that Will bargained with Nolan to swap sleeping situations with him for the night. Apparently Gabe wanted to come too, but Will wanted at least one of them to stay in their room. Didn't trust Nolan, clearly.
Will takes him out for breakfast. Ryan would normally just get by on dining hall food, even skip breakfast sometimes, but the Smiths have money and he's not gonna say no to a good meal. The food's fantastic, but he still has to excuse himself halfway through the meal. Another case of the petals. Will finally asks about it when he comes back, asking who it is and sipping on his coffee like it's as casual as talking about the weather.
Ryan panics. Considers telling Will something about his girlfriend losing feelings, but he doesn't. It just wouldn't make sense, and Will's always been so good at knowing when Ryan lies to him. So he tells the truth. One word, doesn't elaborate, doesn't tell him that he's joking, because he isn't. It shuts Will up, at least, but then he is white as a sheet and excusing himself and calling over a waiter for the bill before either of them have finished eating. He still pays for Ryan's meal, but he's gone within two minutes.
Gabe's in his dorm when Ryan comes back. Still no sight of Nolan, but that's fine. Will must've already talked to Gabe about this morning, because the look on his face is pure worry when Ryan walks in. He's a good kid, always trying to keep everyone happy and taken care of. Almost a bit of a mom friend, but he doesn't quite feel motherly. He keeps Ryan occupied for a couple hours before gently prodding about the morning. It's easy for Ryan to tell him everything, because he already knows and was the first one to find out about the disease anyway.
Ryan cries about it. It's a nasty situation and it's not going to get any better, not unless he gets surgery, but he's heard mixed opinions about that. There's, like, a fifty percent chance he'll lose the ability to love entirely. He doesn't want that, even if the alternative is throwing up petals until he loses the feelings. IF he loses the feelings at all. Gabe lets him cry, comforts him, gets him water. It helps.
Nolan doesn't come back for a week, presumably stays with Will while Gabe stays with him. Ryan skips half his classes, just checks the assignments online and does whatever work he can. He gets by. When he finally does start going back to his classes, it's obvious that Will is avoiding him. Fine. Maybe it'll help. The less he sees Will, the less likely his feelings are to stick around, right? Nolan eventually shows up in their dorm again, but doesn't talk as much. Go figure. Will probably spilled to him and now he thinks Ryan's weird or something.
It becomes the new routine. They barely see each other, the petals don't stop, and it just gets worse in the summer. Maybe three times in two months. Ryan isn't even surprised when Will announces that he won't be coming back to BC, that he's debuting with the Sharks early. It's scarily okay with him, his hope that the disease will go away completely overshadowing any ounce of sadness he feels about it.
Carter Hart, Patrick Kane, Artemi Panarin, Nick Cousins, Drew Doughty, and Dillion Dube all still play hockey at a professional level even though they’ve had ‘allegations’ against them. Rape/Sexual assault is the one crime that you can’t justify yet it is the easiest to get away with because no body believes the victims who had the courage and bravery to come forward. The nhl organization and a lot of fans are willing to just sweep the players actions under the rug as long as the player can make plays and win games.
