Olaf: pediphilic murder, murdered multiple people via arson which is just fucking the worst, was going to assist in poisoning everyone at the hotel, let an innocent man be framed for his crimes and then had the man’s innocent brother killed, wanted to poison the world, shitty and terrible person and a bad actor
Lemony: was upset by a break up caused by miserable circumstances particularly being framed for someone else’s crimes and possibly, if he wasn’t lying, an incorrect article, accepted his fiancée’s decision but in a letter in a response to one of her questions once said that when he’s at his absolutely loneliest he wishes she hadn’t remarried and regretted their estrangement, which is shitty and impolite yes, and saying occasional bad comments against an ex’s happiness shortly after a break-up is never is done by anyone decent obviously and also couldn’t catch up with the Bauledaires, even though he is literally a fugitive from the law and look where catching up with the Baudelaires put his brother, and also he seemed upset that he missed them in tSS by one day in order to leave the headquarters and find them again, and kept mentioning ‘if I were with the Bauldeaires’ at that, possibly didn’t kidnap the Bauldeaires on their way to respectable and safe and trustworthy guardians that were safer than running off with him re: Monty and Josephine if that taxi driver was him and Olaf hadn’t turned up, may have possibly not taken them with him when he had the sugar bowl and was absolutely a moving target to 100% of the villainous portion of vfd, once stated that he regretted accounting the Bauledaire’s lives in order to aquit them of the same misrepresentation via the press that he received when he was hiding underneath the table at a villainess person’s party and his typewriter started spilling ink from out underneath the tablecloth risking revealing him to the villainous people at the party, wasn’t able to aquit himself of Olaf’s crimes and have Olaf imprisoned between tSS and tPP when he finally located evidence to do so even though Olaf was at sea, the Baulediares were being sent to his sister, he was doing something weird trying to find something in a room full of sand and VFD were organising a giant trial to get exactly that outcome, probably should have gone off and done shit in that amount of time by getting shit done like adopting the Baudelaires, taking on Poe and taking them away in the space of three days idk, that’s conceivably something that he could have actually done, but the trial was being organised in mere days and he was on he run still and doing VFD business and would have needed to turn himself in in order to put so, and the Baudelaires were planned to go to Kit and Dewey and stay at the hotel and which would have been happier lives for them than with Lemony
Me: readers of these books literally consider Olaf redeemable or more worth of sympathy than Lemony who still gets called every kind of aweful and worse than Olaf but go off I guess
