time touches HEARTS & MINDS, leaving only the memories intact. this time around, it doesn’t hurt as much as before and he wonders why —-—- LOSING friends should hurt like when he’d lost Bucky and then Peggy, who he lost again and again every time he visited her until she left him too. ROCKY first impressions and head to head confrontations was what he and Stark were known for on the team but it’s why he VALUED his friendship with Tony, who hated Captain America and genuinely liked Steve Rogers to the point that he would keep the truth TUCKED away, hoping it would never find the light … until it did.
it doesn’t hurt like it should. he just feels more numb and empty which is even WORSE, with only the flashes of Tony’s wide eyes with hands covering his face with genuine horror that he would die from the raised VIBRANIUM SHIELD that Howard had made. when Tony is the one to call, he JUMPS at the opportunity with a heavy heart of guilt, even if he may not look like it.

his original pain had stemmed from the death of his parents by bucky’s hand; steve’s prior knowledge of the issue only maximized the situation. nearly a year ago, that same man had been upset at him for not sharing information. hypocritical, much? he almost didn't want to acknowledge the apology that came from steve's letter. and although steve’s call to destroy the suit's arc reactor in their fight had been the much needed one, being left alone without a working suit in those subzero temperatures of siberia had worsened the sour taste left in his mouth.
contact with the vigilante hadn’t happened since steve’s written letter. sure, the break in to the raft facility had been recorded all over the news and he'd caught glimpses but most of it came from ross trying to tear him a new one. for some reason, he had remained reserved... up until his choice to make a phone call which resulted in steve standing before him now. his chin arched up.
just as in the call, his words were clipped. " & you're bearded. " tony's hands slid into his pockets, fingers curled uncomfortably. " look... i need something. " your help.
