Truly remarkable that the Good Omens finale was able to run with so many of my personal Worst Case Scenario endings at once, like I almost respect that. Pretty much all the things that I hoped wouldn’t happen happened.
We got “it actually ends with the end of everything,” “they never existed,” we (sort of) got “they become humans.” No kiss. No real acknowledgement of a romantic relationship, just vague statements made mostly to other people and not each other directly and earnestly.
THEY didn’t retire to a cottage in the South Downs because THAT’S NOT THEM!!! THEY were written out of existence with the Book of Life, along with all the incredible things they’ve done and the lives they’ve touched. They never formed an unlikely friendship that became a love that defied the world (as everyone understood it) and lasted eons. They never made a nebula. They never saved the world out of love for humanity.
They never had nightingales.
Their story was so beautiful and hopeful and affirming and they just…erased it??? I’m beyond gutted. Yes, I can still watch or read the story of Good Omens but that’s not the same thing.
If you liked it, good for you. I’ve been a book fan for a long time and I understand the ending just fine. I just don’t like it.
Aside from a handful of incredibly acted scenes from David Tennant and Michael Sheen that were truly a joy to watch, it was a devastating end (in all the worst ways imho) to one of my favorite stories of all time.
