I firmly believe Modern day Merlin deals with the same story misfortune he had in canon.

As a medieval historian, he constantly tells other scholars about various customs, and when they inevitably ask for sources, he has to tell them it’s “just a feeling” (because he can’t reveal he lived during that period).

So everyone assumes he’s a fool and not really that good of a professor, but without fail, every single one of his theories gets proven right within a few years

And it drives the scholarly community insane.

Imagine instead of servant, Uther had made Merlin Arthur's personal bodyguard.

Aka, Uther thinks:

guy saw the danger

guy acted on the danger

guy protects royalty

Ergo, must mean boy is competent at fighting.

What then follows is Arthur desperately trying to a) show his father that Merlin is NOT knight material or b) train Merlin in combat.

Somehow, Merlin is always only competent with Uther around.

New fic idea: Merlin wants to tutor Morgana in magic without revealing his own so he decides to do it in disguise as Dragoon or the Dolma

He tutors Morgana as the Dolma because not only is it easier to explain why Morgana is alone with a woman if they get caught but also she’s way less likely to punch a woman in the throat if she doesn’t like their advice. Later on when magic is legalized and Morgana’s found out the truth she snags Merlin for magical emergencies like “sorry Arthur, its some real hot girl shit, you wouldn’t understand-”

So this is the moment that Arthur chose Merlin over his father.  No, really.  I mean, I know Uther was all poltergeisty and tried to kill Gwen too, and Percival for that matter.  But it was Merlin who was about to get the business end of a sword.  And Arthur basically said: no.  No to the last vestige of his father, no to the hope of seeing him ever again, no to ever gaining his approval.  And yes to Merlin.  Even cutting off Uther in the middle of what he was saying.  Because Arthur was done, though it killed him.  And Merlin knew what Arthur was giving up in that moment.  He’s not crying for himself, he’s crying for Arthur.  For Arthur saving him.  For Arthur chosing him.

So yeah.  I like this moment.  This is a good moment.  And one of my favorite episodes of Series 5, for so, so many reasons.
