I say unsettling because I realize that double-flowered hippeastrums kind of remind me of The Thing from the Carpenter movie. I don't know why! All those extra petals just...exploding out of the velvety little throat...

My poor Apple Blossom, who I bought late in the season. She came terribly bent over, but straightened up and bloomed nicely. Then, worrisomely, she couldn't keep any leaves on at all...they would get to about 9 inches long, then wither. Finally I put her in some new growing medium (I just used some leftover orchid bark I HD laying around...she seems to like that more than actual potting mix, so who knows?) And she is doing much better! Two lovely leaves and she is fat as a berry! :) I'm looking forward to having her for a long time.

Disaster strikes! I had to uproot and repot my Batch 1 seedlings, after finding one seedling struggling with red blotch. I kept wondering how or why its leaves kept rotting off...it had four and ended up with one, from the infection. I was debating trying to save the poor thing, but in the end I trashed it. I have lots of others...over 30, I think, so I think I'll get some fungicide for them now. Ahh, well. :(

Some hippeastrum seedlings I have coming along! I self-crossed a no-name "Pink" hippeastrum I got from Home Depot, and then sprouted the seeds on water. They were very tenacious and I only lost a few, mainly to mildew, which struck them despite me dosing the water with hydrogen peroxide. Right now they are growing like weeds and the strongest batch is all about 4" tall, with 2 leaves each. I am very proud of them! I gave them Jobe's fertilizer sticks for houseplants, one per small pot, broken in half, and I'm eagerly waiting to see what kinds of flowers they will have. :) too bad it might not be for four more years, haha...

Sweet Nymph in flower! She put on the show of all shows--Two scapes, one that had five flowers and another with four, blooming pretty much constantly since the middle of last month. Beautiful and fascinating and totally worth the wait!

Some more shots of Sweet Nymph! There are two scapes in these pics, and she is currently putting up a third. I was hoping for fragrance, but she has none...just very interesting flowers. I'm not sure I'm actually a fan of doubles, haha... I saved some of her pollen, just to see what I can see. Maybe I'll try to cross her with one of my other varieties. The beautiful pink flowers with darker veining is very pretty. I think she would be more impressive and less visually cluttered as a single.

Sweet Nymph! I just got her the day before yesterday, potted her yesterday. She already has a bud poking out, and I'm so excited! :D I got her from EasyToGrowBulbs, and she is MASSIVE--the size of a softball, with two offsets that are each the size of a ping pong ball. I hear that a lot of times people get the wrong bulb in the mail, so I am crossing my fingers that I get what I paid for--also because she was very, very pricey--$17.00 for one bulb, without the shipping. My most expensive rosebush, by comparison, was only $12. (I'm cheap because I always expect either wind or pests to decimate everything.) But since she's going to live in the house, I figured she wouldn't be subject to any such attacks, and was therefore worth the price.

Strange leaf markings? I don't remember which one this is on, but it doesn't look like mosaic and I know I don't have any household bugs (well, besides spiders, but that's not really my fault...) I think these are markings from mechanical damage. The leaves slumped over several times as they were growing, and I recently started staking them to prevent that.

Beautiful Bell Pepper Bushes! These are all different types of hybrids, one of which are Burpee Chocolate Bell Peppers, and another of which is a yellow variety I can't remember. The bugs and wind are doing a number on them, so I am going to bring them inside over the winter to help them recuperate. They also need way, WAAAAY bigger pots.

The tabletop greenhouse plants...the IKEA orchid, and four pots of the 'Pink x self' hippeastrum seedlings.

A miniature phalaenopsis orchid my mother got me from IKEA, and two pots of baby 'Pink' hippeastrum selfs. They look so much like grass, haha

I think this is White or Pink...not looking so hot. I cleaned them up by peeling off the reddened outer scales down to the clean white ones underneath. Hopefully this will stave off further problems! :)
