Aru Shah and Aiden Acharya were childhood best friends-until Aru left without a word. Years later, they reunite at Mini and Rudy's wedding,
Chapter 1: New Boy, Who Dis?
Aru Shah was in the middle of an extremely important mission—stealing Kara’s headband—when her mother ruined everything.
“Aru, Kara, come say hello to our new neighbors!” Krithika called from the living room.
Aru groaned from where she was half-hanging off Kara’s bed, the stolen headband clutched in her hand. “Ma, I’m busy!”
“Busy losing,” Kara said smugly, yanking the headband back.
Aru gasped. Betrayal! This meant war.
Before she could reclaim her rightful prize, her mother’s footsteps approached, and Aru—being a genius—immediately flopped onto the floor in defeat.
“I heard that,” Krithika said, unimpressed. “Come. Now.”
Kara huffed but stood, fixing her hair. “Fine.”
Aru stuck her tongue out at her but followed anyway.
Downstairs, the front door was already open, and their mother was chatting with a woman Aru had never seen before. She was pretty, with a kind but tired smile, and standing beside her was a boy—probably Kara’s age.
He had dark hair that flopped into his eyes, hands stuffed in his pockets, and the expression of someone who wanted to be anywhere but here.
“Aru, Kara,” their mom said. “This is Malini Acharya and her son, Aiden. They just moved in.”
Kara, ever the polite one, smiled first. “Hi.”
Aiden nodded. “Hi.”
Aru, ever the dramatic one, tilted her head. “Are you shy, or are you secretly a ninja?”
Kara groaned. “Aru—”
Aiden blinked. He looked caught between confusion and amusement. “Um… neither?”
Suspicious. Very suspicious. Aru narrowed her eyes.
“We moved here from New York,” Malini said. “It’s just the two of us now, so we’re still settling in.”
Aru didn’t get why adults always said things like that—just the two of us—like it wasn’t a whole story wrapped up in a few words. But she noticed the way Malini gave Aiden’s shoulder a small squeeze, like she was reminding him that it was okay. (Malini and Khambakat Ghade divorce...)
Kara, of course, said the right thing. “That must be a big change. Welcome to the neighborhood.”
Aru, of course, said the weird thing. “Do you like dinosaurs?”
Aiden blinked again. “Uh. Yeah?”
That was enough for Aru. “Okay. You can stay.”
Kara buried her face in her hands.
Their moms, however, beamed like this was the start of some grand friendship. “Aiden is the same age as Kara,” Krithika said. “Maybe you two can be friends.”
Aru gasped, spinning on her sister. “Oh my gods. You have a rival now.”
Kara shot her a look. “That’s not—”
“Don’t worry,” Aru continued, clapping Aiden on the shoulder like she was bestowing a great honor. “I’ll train you.”
Aiden blinked a third time. “Train me… for what?”
Aru grinned. “To defeat Kara, obviously.”
There was a pause. Then—very, very quietly—Aiden let out a laugh.
Just a small one. But Aru caught it.
And she decided, right then and there, that maybe Aiden Acharya wasn’t so bad after all.

After years away at boarding school, Aru Shah returns home, determined to start over. New school, new life, no expectations. But she quickly
Chapter 1: Being Popular is Overrated.
Being popular was overrated.
No matter how much Aiden tried to blend in, it never worked. He could wear the plainest shirt and the most boring jeans, but people still looked at him when he walked by. He didn't want attention—just a normal life.
So when Kara Shah confessed to him after school, he didn't know what to say.
"I like you," she had said, leaning against the fence.
Her voice was steady, but her fingers tugged at her jacket sleeve. "Go out with me."
Aiden blinked. "...What?"
"I said go out with me," she repeated, as if it were obvious.
The idea hadn't even crossed his mind. Kara was one of his closest friends—fun, competitive, and blunt in a weirdly affectionate way. He'd never thought she liked him like that. And now that she was waiting for his answer, he felt a heavy knot in his chest.
He didn't feel the same.
"Kara... I've always thought of you as a friend," he said quietly. "A good friend you know? I don't want to ruin that—"
She cut him off with a scoff. "Relax. I don't even like you like that."
Aiden stared. "...Huh?"
"I was just messing with you." She smirked, though something in her expression looked tight. "You should've seen your face."
Before he could say anything else, she turned and walked off.
After that, things changed between them.
Living across the street from Kara made it worse. Awkward greetings. Quick nods. Aiden still saw her as a friend, but Kara acted like nothing had ever happened—as if they barely knew each other.
Then one night, something unexpected happened.
Aiden was sitting on his bed, flipping through photos on his camera—Shadowfax, his favorite—when he glanced out the window. That's when he saw her.
A girl he'd never seen before, asleep near the window of Kara's house.
She wore Spider-Man pajamas, her dark hair braided over her shoulder. The moonlight caught her face, and Aiden froze, confused.
Who was she?
Without thinking too hard about it, he quietly raised his camera and snapped a photo. He told himself it wasn't weird—just curiosity.
But the image stayed in his head for days.
Even when Brynne rambled at lunch about some new recipe she'd invented, Aiden barely heard a word. His mind kept drifting back to the mystery girl.
His questions were answered sooner than he expected.
Someone crashed into him in the hallway.
"Whoa—" Aiden steadied the person automatically.
Big brown eyes met his. The girl.
She went bright red. "I—I'm so sorry—"
"It's fine," Aiden said, distracted. Up close, she was even prettier.
They crouched to gather her books.
"What's your name?" he asked.
"Shah," she said quickly. "Aru Shah."
Shah.
Before he could ask anything else, she panicked. "I'm late—I have to go!"
She hurried off, leaving him kneeling there, stunned.
A smile crept onto his face.
"She's cute," Brynne said from behind him.
Aiden nearly jumped. "I—what? No, I don't—"
"You're blushing," she said, smirking.
"I—shut up," he muttered, but Brynne only laughed.
Aiden barely noticed. His mind was already replaying the moment.
Aru Shah.
Who was she?
And why did he suddenly want to know more about her?

Prologue:
September 12, 1952:
The wind howled through the trees surrounding Augustus Day High School.
A young girl ran across the rain-soaked courtyard, her shoes splashing through puddles. Her breath came in short, desperate gasps as she glanced over her shoulder.
Someone was following her.
The footsteps echoed through the storm.
Slow.
Steady.
Getting closer.
Lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating the towering silhouette of the school's chapel.
The girl sprinted toward it.
Please, please, please-
She threw open the chapel doors and stumbled inside.
The room was dark except for the occasional flashes of lightning filtering through the stained-glass windows.
Her hands shook as she grabbed a nearby table and dragged it in front of the entrance.
The table scraped loudly against the floor.
Then silence.
The girl pressed a hand over her mouth and listened.
Nothing.
For a moment, she thought she had lost them.
Then-
Thud.
Her eyes widened.
Thud.
A footstep outside the chapel.
Thud.
Another.
Closer.
The girl's heart pounded in her chest.
She quickly ducked beneath one of the tables and curled into herself, trying to make as little noise as possible.
The chapel doors burst open.
Wind rushed inside.
Thunder cracked overhead.
The table she'd pushed against the entrance slid aside as if it weighed nothing.
The footsteps entered the chapel.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Searching.
The girl squeezed her eyes shut.
Please don't find me.
Please don't-
A flash of lightning illuminated the room.
For the briefest moment, she saw the outline of a figure.
And the gleam of a chainsaw.
The girl's scream was swallowed by the storm.
Then everything went black.

Chapter 1: Well This is Awkward..
The families all stared at each other.
The silence stretched across the living room, thick and suffocating. The chandelier above us sparkled a little too brightly, reflecting off polished marble floors and glass tables that had never known fingerprints.
Well.
This is awkward.
Krithika Shah was the first to speak, her voice smooth but careful. Suyodhana simply offered a polite smile, the kind that didn't quite reach his eyes.
If you're just as confused as I am, let's start from the beginning.
☆☆☆
My name is Sheela Jagan Shah, and along with my twin sister, Nikita Jagan Shah, we are the youngest members of the Shah family.
Our family is rich.
Not normal rich.
But rich RICH.
The kind of rich where your house echoes when you walk through it. The kind of rich where people lower their voices when they say your last name.
But we didn't grow up like that.
Dad's business skyrocketed about two years ago. One minute we were comfortable, the next we were moving into a mansion with ceilings so high I got dizzy looking up. Since then, we've been really rich.
It's been... interesting to say the least.
Nikita and I were enrolled in Augustus Day School, the top private school in Atlanta, Georgia. The uniforms are tailored. The lockers are electronic. Even the cafeteria smells expensive.
We have an older sister, Aru Shah. She graduated from Augustus Day too, and Dad thought it was only fair we follow in her footsteps.
I think we've adjusted.
Mostly.
Though before, it was different.
Remember when I said we didn't grow up extremely rich?
Here's the context.
Our mom, Krithika Shah, is an archaeologist. She used to run the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture. The museum wasn't just her job .
It was home.
We lived in the apartment above the museum, just close enough that we could sneak into empty exhibit halls after hours. Marble floors. Ancient statues. Dim golden lighting. Nikita and I would race past display cases while Mom threatened to ban us from the restoration wing forever if we broke something priceless.
Ice cream for dinner sometimes. Movie nights in Mom's office. Aru didi chasing us down long corridors, dramatic and loud and unstoppable.
It wasn't glamorous.
But it was ours.
Now things are different.
Aru didi is in college. Mom is always traveling to acquire new artifacts, her phone constantly buzzing. Dad keeps telling her to sell the museum, that it isn't necessary anymore.
And Dad—Suyodhana Shah—is rarely home before midnight. When he is, dinner feels like a business meeting. Quiet. Measured. Careful.
But I don't complain.
After all, they say they're doing this for us.
And now?
The family is all here together.
Well.
Almost.
(Aru's not here. But I can't tell you where she is. Nikita made me promise not to say too much).
On any other day, I would've been excited to see everyone sitting in the same room, dressed nicely, pretending we're one big happy family.
Today feels different.
Right now, we have guests over.
Specifically, Dad's rival company.
They sit across from us on cream-colored couches, posture straight, smiles sharp.
They're talking about an alliance.
A "fresh start."
I feel my blood run cold as I hear the next words.
Nikita's hand tightens around mine under the table.
Arranged marriage.
With
Aru...
The word marriage seems to echo off the high ceilings.
Mom shoots us a warning look when we gape at the adults. One of the guests raises an eyebrow, perfectly composed. Mom laughs lightly and says we're only thirteen, that we wouldn't understand these matters.
But we do.
We understand enough.
The conversation wraps up with firm handshakes and polite promises. Shoes click against marble as the guests leave.
The front door shuts.
The silence afterward is worse.
Nikita speaks first, because she always does.
"Why are you making Aru marry someone she doesn't even know?"
Mom sighs, pressing her fingers to her temple. "It's for the best."
"For who?" I ask quietly. "We hated them two years ago. How are we suddenly leaving the past behind?"
Dad steps back into the living room at that exact moment.
His expression is sharp.
"Go to your rooms."
No one argues.
Mom gently guides us toward the staircase.
Despite being offered separate bedrooms when we moved in, Nikita and I refused. The house is too big to sleep alone.
I sit on my bed, staring at the pale walls. Nikita drops onto hers dramatically.
"Arranged marriage?" she mutters. "With a rival company?"
I blink at the ceiling.
"Where's Aru?" she asks suddenly.
I look at her.
"She came home at 2:30 last night," Nikita says. "Tiptoeing and everything."
I can't help smiling.
Our parents still don't know she came back.
Or that she slipped out again early this morning..
Nikita raises a suspicious eyebrow at me.
"Do you think she has a boyfriend?" I ask.
Nikita laughs. Loud and dramatic.
"Aru? Please."
I giggle.
The room quiets.
Then Nikita lowers her voice.
"I know where she went."
I grin and wink at her.
She groans, biting her lower lip. "If Mom and Dad find out, we're dead."
"Relax," I say, pulling out my phone.
"Should we let her know?" Nikita asks softly.
I'm already typing.
We send the message.
The twins share a pointed look.
And sigh.

Reblog if you have mourned the death of a fictional character.
If you do not reblog this you are in fact lying.
aru shah is so underrated!!
go ahead and read it already if you havent, because it is SUCH a good story. i was honestly suprised to find it had a small fandom and wasnt well-known like pjo.
This could be us but he's playin 💔
@ssj2hindudude
I don’t think we as a fandom realize how INSANE the achilles spot is for percabeth. He hasn’t really processed his feelings but when he gets in the river styx, Annabeth pulls him through. He imagines Tyson, his brother. He imagines Grover, his best friend. He imagines his mother, Sally fucking Jackson, and it’s not enough
But you know what is?
Annabeth Chase. She is the thing keeping him there. She is quite literally the reason he stays alive. That is his Annabeth.
I’m going fucking insane
Maybe it’s a blessing in disguise that the Aru shah fandom is so small bc who knows how much toxicity we escaped
