She giggled at the hand in her hair – Kamui always liked it when her mama played with it. She was always very gentle with her ( especially on the days that she tripped! The carefully tended to scrapes on her knees were proof enough of that ). Her mama was the best mama in the whole wide world, as far as she was concerned! No one deserved the title more than her.

“I did!” Small hands snake into the pockets of her dress, feeling around carefully. Was it still here…? Something cold, slightly wet… Ah-ha! Gently pulling out her new friend, she showed it off to her mother, smile wider than before. “I was playing by the field and I saw this – Miss Miriel says its a microhellday!”

The frog, mildly perturbed after being taken from its warm, dark place, croaked in annoyance.

She really should have expected that, if only because her little starshine was a child, and children liked things like this- just as Mikoto used to be, herself. Briefly, she remembers doing the same thing to her own mother... With a soft laugh, Mikoto shifts slightly where she crouched. 

“I see. It’s very cute, isn’t it? But I’m sure it will want to go home eventually- so in a little bit, why don’t we do just that?” Certainly she always did like amphibians and reptiles, but honestly, there was no way Mikoto was going to let Kamui keep one as a pet- not currently, at least. “It can stay a little longer, though, don’t worry- why not stay with me while I finish my work, then we can bring your little friend back to it’s home?”

And what good would war bring us? Our farms are prosperous, our people are wealthy...”

“Yes, that’s me. And if it’s not a bother, I’ve been curious what being a royal in Hoshido was like. I was told you’re very kind and approachable. I only really know what Nohrian nobility is like, and it’s from guarding Lord Leo.”

“I don’t know. ... But so many things have happened beyond anyone’s choice- it’s only natural to wonder about the ‘what ifs’, isn’t it?”

it’s been a few weeks since he joined the royal family back in castle shirasagi and he still felt extremely out of place. of course, things weren’t going to change overnight but it was difficult to accept the familiar kindness when he couldn’t return the gesture.

valeriu was standing in his the old bedroom when a soft voice cut through the silence and brought him back to the present. seeing the queen in front of him, he gave a hasty bow, “oh, your highness–” at the slip-up, the blond fumbled, ï mean, mother!”

damn, he must have sounded like a fool but he still couldn’t help it…

“i, um, did you need something…?”

Ah. The queen first, and then the mother? Usually it was the other way around. But she couldn’t hold it against him. Much had happened, even without the years of separation. It was... saddening, in a way. Many ways, really. 

In truth, she should not have been up and about yet. But few in life could ever get the results they wanted out of her. With a soft smile, pushing those thoughts out of her mind, Mikoto shook her head. 

“Not exactly... though if you are willing, I wouldn’t mind talking. Is everything alright?”
