MC’s Guidebook: Spirits

Spirits exist. Or so some believe. You may or may not believe in spirits, but they are nice to know about and have a reference to especially if your mind changes. Let’s get to it!

What are Spirits?

Google: the nonphysical part of a person regarded as a person’s true self and as capable of surviving physical death or separation ; the nonphysical part of a person manifested as an apparition after their death; a ghost.

Spirits are entities, life forms that live in a different realm known as the Astral. This is why we can’t see them. These are either beings like fairies, thoughtforms, demons and angels(there are more but not all of them have been discovered) but they are also our friends and families that have passed on as well as others who have died.

What About Heaven or Hell?

Well I think spirits can choose that to be completely honest as different religions have different areas the dead go to(heaven or hell for Christians, the underworld for the Greek pantheon. However, the astral is a place that they go to. A place they can meet the living. 

What is the Astral?

The astral plane is just that. It is right between the living and the dead and a massive open space. You can of course visit, but I won’t go over that. There are plenty of sources here on tumblr and on google. You can build there and make your own creations. You can even visit long distance friends and your gods and goddesses here. You can travel there and there are posts and resources to help you out in how to do it safely.

So the Astral is your Imagination?

No. It may seem like that, but it’s not really like that. It is kind of hard to explain especially since my first explanations are hard to determine. However if anyone wants to add you can.

Back to Spirits: Are They Bad?

Not all of them. Some are malevolent others aren’t. I also want to clear up that not all of the things you have seen will be inherently bad or good(fairies aren’t always good, demons aren’t always bad, etc). It is all determined by their own choices.

How Do We Know They’re There?

Scientifically it hasn’t been proven, unless you believe the shows out there(like me I’m a sucker I know). However, we know that something exists out there. We can feel if something new is in our presence, but we have a hard time explaining it to others. Sometimes we feel cold for no reason. Sometimes our chests tighten without us really knowing why that is. Sometimes we feel like someone is watching us even though we have thoroughly checked we are alone.

Are Human’s the Only Ones to Have A Living Spirit?

Nope. Well at least that’s my opinion. Some believe plants, animals, insects and all living things have a spirit(some even believe non-living things do too).

Do I Have to Believe in Spirits?

Nope! That is up to you. It is your craft after all.

I Believe in Spirits: Do I Have to Work With Them?

Nope. Not at all. That again is your choice on what to do with your craft. Is it helpful to know about them? Yeah. You can never be too safe ya know?

How Do I Start Using the Tools?

First let’s start with doing basic research on them. You can do that on here or on other sites on google. Once you’ve done that get comfortable with them. 

Will I Always Come In Contact With a Spirit?

No. Not always. It’s kind of like a telemarketer. Sometimes someone will answer and stay on, but chances are kinda slim unless you know what you’re doing.

How Do I Summon a Spirit?

Hell if I know. I haven’t done it and many Conjurers don’t like to tell as it can bring harm to them or to the spirits that may be in their care. 

Can Spirits Stick to You?

Yes. Sometimes witches have a spirit companion or a spirit family. Sometimes, there’s just one who hangs around but doesn’t communicate with the witch at all.

The Spirit Sticking to Me is Malevolent: What do I Do?

Banish the mother fucker dude. Or seek out a conjurer or spirit worker to see if they can help you figure out if it’s malevolent or just hurt. If in the end it is just a baddie banishing it is a good solution to it.

Spirits Can Get Hurt?

Yep! They can have physical wounds as well as emotional ones. These are either caused by abuse or a fight, so be careful with it. If you find an injured spirit please go to someone who can help them. 

Spirit Guides and Spirit Animals: What’s the Difference?

IF I am not mistaken a Spirit Animal is a Native American spirit guide meant for one person and is there to help them to their correct path after going on a spiritual journey to find them. THIS is part of a CLOSED CULTURE. So I don’t know much about it other than unless you’re not native you have a spirit guide not a spirit animal.

A Spirit Guide works the same way, but it’s not religiously followed. Spirit Animals and finding them have a special ritual and its only known to the Natives. Keep that in mind witches.

What if I Meet a Spirit from a Closed Culture?

Don’t interact. Walk away. It’s not rude and most likely they found you by accident. There’s a whole ass post on this here on tumblr. Just look for it.

How Do I Get a Spirit Companion?

Sometimes one will just show up and say “Yo I’m here to teach you some things and help you in spells or whatever in return give me specific offerings and a place to stay” others will go out to spirit shops and adopt them! However, it all depends on if they want to be life long or not.

Spirit Adoption: How does that work?

You go to a shop like @lorelei-of-the-rhein is a good example, see if any of the spirits they have available call out to you and fill out an application to that spirit! Please do make sure you have an astral home first and that you have the time to be able to spend with said spirit though! The spirit will look over the applications and choose. If you’re chosen you will be messaged, if you’re not you will also be messaged. If you are chosen the shop will contact you and explain more to you as I don’t feel comfortable enough explaining how a shop works in that kind of detail.

Spirit Vigilantes and What They Do:

These guys are the ones to look out for. These are people who will go to shops astral sanctuaries and adoption areas and steal spirits. This can hurt the workers and the spirits. Why they do this is because they believe the spirits are being adopted out against their will. To them this is freeing them. However most spirits will go to shops and ask for help.

Spirit Care:

Spirits do require care especially if you want to be a companion. So here’s some things to keep in mind that you’d have to do if you want to have a spirit companion:

A astral home

Real or Astral Offerings

A Vessel for the spirit to find you and easier communication

Time to spend with the spirit.

So Spirits are like Children and or Animals?

NO!! Spirits are fully capable of making choices and knowing what is right or wrong. Do not treat them like they are lesser than you it may just piss them off.

How Should I Treat a Spirit?

With respect of course. But it also depends. You’d have to do some research on that. If they are a companion treating them like they are family is a good place to start, but don’t demean them as I’m sure no one likes that.

You Mentioned Spirit Abuse: How does that Happen?

Just like it can with you or me. Sometimes spirits are forced to be adopted out by bad spirit shops. Sometimes their attachment to a vessel is too tight and can be hurting them. Sometimes, someone will collect spirits but not care for them and ignore their needs. Some just think it’s fun to be mean to spirits and hurt them. This abuse can lead to traumas and is one of the reasons why spirits are vetted before being adopted out

Spirit Hoarders and Collectors:

These people like to just have spirits. They don’t do anything with them and once that starts so does the Abuse. These people collect spirits and many of them. This is different from having a large spirit family as the spirits in a large family are still being cared for properly.

Past Life Spread Analysis

CARD 1 - Who you were:

For your first card, representing who you were in this past life, I pulled the card Four of Wands.  This card generally means: harmony, celebration, community, and stability.  What I am getting from this card, in regards to this question, is that in this past life you were someone who was full of light, full of life, and were a very happy person.  You were someone who was very easily able to reach your goals through hard-work, and effort, and allowed yourself to be grateful and thankful for all that you had.  You were someone very well liked within your community, and family, and looked to as someone to inspire and motivate others.  You were kind, fun, and creative, and I am getting such a good, positive energy from this card.  The best way to put it is that you were the life of the part, not in regards to heavily partying, but in regards to making everything a little bit better for those who surrounded you.  But, I am also sensing a bit of a dark side to this card.  Perhaps you weren’t as happy, or as content on the inside as you showed on the outside.  I sense that there were a lot of hidden parts of you that you never truly allowed to reach the surface.  Ultimately you were a good, thoughtful person who enjoyed life to the fullest, but ached to be who you truly were, but couldn’t, for one reason or another.

CARD 2 - Where you lived:

For your second card, representing where you lived in your past life, I pulled the card Daughter of Swords (Page of Swords).  This card typically means: energetic, intelligent, challenging, and unique.  From this, and the energy I am getting from the card, I feel as though the place where you lived in this past life was lively, academic, and strove for success among all other things.  With this in mind, I am getting a very intense sense of either ancient Greece, or ancient Egypt.  I can sense a lot of growth, economically, and spiritually, within this place, and this made your previous self feel very at home, and comfortable.  This was a place of rich, deep culture and creativity, although the class divide was very apparent, and very obvious.  The more I feel this card the more I lean more towards ancient Egypt.  There is so much focus on culture, and intelligence, and class divide, I can’t help but think about such things as the pyramids, the slavery, the library of Alexandria, the enriched culture of Egypt, and it’s spirituality.

CARD 3 - Your childhood:

For your third card, about your past life’s childhood, I received the card Father of Swords (King of Swords).  This card usually represents clear thinking, intellectual power, authority, and truth.  This card is very heavy in it’s energy.  Although I feel like your past self had a good upbringing, you were from a wealthy, and stable family, I sense that you were constantly in the shadow of your betters; perhaps an older brother, or your father.  You were an honest, and intelligent child in your past life, and you wanted to grow up to be someone with authority, and power.  I am getting a very masculine energy from all of your cards so far, so I am sensing that your past self was a man.  Which, leads me to sense that you very much wanted your father’s attention, approval, and praise.  You were obedient, smart, and understood your position very early on in life, which means you probably grew up much quicker than you should have, and never were able to truly have fun, and experience childhood.  I feel like you were so preoccupied by what your father wanted you to be that you neglected your own needs in order to gain his approval.

CARD 4 - Your adolescence:

For your fourth card, about your past life’s adolescence, I pulled the card Two of Pentacles.  This card generally represents: balance, adaptability, time management, and organization.  Again, looking back to the previous card, I am rather positive now that, in your past life, you were a young man who was born into a certain position, and from childhood was forced into being trained, and molded into someone you may not truly have been.  Although you were more than capable of handling the obstacles and responsibilities you were given, you longed for something more.  You wanted to share you kindness, and creativity with the world, not just your ability for authority, and intellectual endeavors.  You had a good, stable life, and received the best education that was offered at the time, and you truly excelled.  Although your life wasn’t exactly what you wanted it to be, you were happy with the fact that you were pleasing those around you, especially your father.  This gave you the motivation, and drive to continue on, working even harder towards your goals, or at least the goals that were set out for you.  

CARD 5 - Your adult life:

For your fifth card, about your past life’s adult life, I drew the card The Emperor.  This card, although rather self-explanatory, generally means such things as: authority, establishment, structure, and patriarchal.  As you can see, based off of your third, and fourth cards, this card not only makes sense, but seems to organically flow.  As a child you were hidden by, and inspired by, the shadow of your father.  As a teenager you were coached, and trained to become something akin to who your father was, and then, as an adult, you were able to replace your father’s position in the family, and in the community.  Your hard-work and motivation truly paid off, and by the time you had grown into an adult you were able to admire the fruits of your labor.  A very benevolent, and kind energy radiates from this card, which leads me to believe that as a ruler, you never lost your kind soul, and were able to use that as a strength within your position.

CARD 6 - Your family life:

For your sixth card, about your past life’s family, I pulled the card Ten of Pentacles.  This card typically represents: wealth, inheritance, family, establishment, and retirement.  What I am sensing from this card is you were successful in your position, whatever it may have been, and your family was also able to benefit from your triumphs.  You had a rather traditional family; a wife, and a couple of children, more likely than not they were boys.  You were a good man, a positive authoritative force, and adored your family above all else.  You had a positive relationship with your wife, and truly cherished her, but your children were the light of your life.  You wanted to give them the compassion, and tenderness, as a father, that you never received from your own.  You had a big heart, and were deeply prone to sympathy for others, but you had no time for manipulation, or lies, especially those that could potentially affect your family.  Ultimately you were successful in all of your endeavors and were truly blessed in life with what you had, and you never allowed your position or your wealth take away from that. 

CARD 7 - Your life’s purpose:

For your seventh card, about your past life’s true purpose in life, I received the card Four of Swords.  This card usually means: contemplation, recuperation, passivity, relaxation, and rest.  Now, what I am getting from this card is that, part of your life’s purpose was to put aside your personal ideals of what life could, or should be, in order to properly learn what you needed to learn.  The other part is to achieve the position in which you were truly born for.  You past life’s purpose was to be a figure of authority, to be a ruler of some kind, in order to show the world, and your community, was truly benevolence, and fairness was.  But, in getting to this point, you did have to take time to consider that your needs, and wants, sometimes needs to be put aside for the greater good of all.  Most of your life was dedicated to taking orders, and following through on responsibilities, because of this a lot of your life was lived internally.  You were very introspective and took the time to be passive, to contemplate what your life was, and who you would become.  It was in this, that you were able to truly aspire to your life’s great purpose.

CARD 8 - How your life ended:

For your eighth card, about how you died in your past life, I pulled the Strength card.  This card represents: strength, courage, patience, control, and compassion.  Based off of this card I would assume that in this past life you passed on due to old age, because it was your time.  I feel no negative energy, or malicious intent, in regards to this card, so I believe it is safe to say that your live ended in a natural, and peaceful way.  You lived a full, and prosperous life, and were able to pass on your knowledge, skills, and compassion to your children so that you would be able to put your mind at rest before your time ran out.  You died the way you lived, full of love, intelligence, compassion, and quiet strength.  Your death affected many people, because of the person you were, and you were missed by many, but you were happy in your last days as you knew you lived your best life, and were confident in those who would come after you.

CARD 9 - Lessons learned in life:

For your ninth card, about the lessons you learned in this past life, I pulled The Empress card.  This card represents: femininity, beauty, nature, nurturing, and abundance.  The main lesson, at least from the energy I am sensing with this card, you learned in this specific past life, was that, regardless of your position, or background, being a good, and compassionate person is important.  There is nothing shameful, or negative about being feminine, or having traditionally feminine qualities.  Emotions, and feelings aren’t gendered, and your past self was able to look past what traditional masculinity looked like, and was able to craft yourself in the ways that were morally right for you.  You were kind, compassionate, nurturing, and benevolent, and most men during this time were not, but you never shied away from this, and instead, garnered much love, and respect because of these qualities.  Your soul was imprinted with goodness, originality, and the love for others, above yourself, and I believe that is something that you have carried within you since this past life was complete.

CARD 10 - Effect on current life:

For your last card, about how your past life has effected your current life, I pulled the Father of Pentacles (King of Pentacles).  This card normally represents: security, control, power, discipline, and abundance.  Because of the impact of this past life, and what your soul was left with after it as finished, was not only the desire to be kind, and to do good, you were also left with the drive, and ambition to do the things you believed you needed to.  Whether or not you have come to recognize these traits within yourself or not, you are a very capable person with so much determination, and discipline.  If you allow yourself to see these sides of you, I truly believe you would be able to achieve anything, and everything, you wanted out of this life.  I definitely sense a lot of kindness, and generosity within you, but don’t allow people to take advantage of that.  You are filled with deep, and rich power, and all you need to do is acknowledge it and you will become everything you wish to be, and more.  All of that power, and strength is within you, and if you haven’t seen that side of yourself yet, please just know that it is there, even when it seems like you’re the complete opposite.  I have faith in you, sweetheart, you’re going to totally excel in life if you just believe in yourself, and your natural abilities!

Your First Love (based on your South Node)

The South Node is a very interesting placement, one from which we can learn a lot about our instincts and habits. For this reason, I think a lot of us experience our first love, whether that end up in a relationship or not, with someone who exhibits a lot of the traits of the sign on our South Node. It’s what’s most familiar to us, and it’s what calls to us naturally. It’s normal that we gravitate toward people that show these qualities, but it’s probably not very likely we will stay with them forever. This is because we are here to grow and expand, and our South Node is what we’ve already experienced. However, the South Node, even though we must learn to reach beyond its walls, can give us some of the greatest gifts we will ever receive. And, if you know how to use it right, the South Node can be an incredible asset to you. 

Aries South Node: Your first love was fiercely independent, probably to a fault sometimes. They made you feel alive when you were around them and their presence was electrifying. However, they also made you feel like you had to follow them or be left behind. They were very headstrong about what they were going to do and you may have felt that meant you didn’t have a big role in their life. You followed them for a while, going along on a wild ride that was mostly exciting but very exhausting. This person always seemed up for the next adventure, and this may have been very attractive to you at first. Eventually, you burned out with the adventures; you wanted to explore the intricacies of the mind more intently, but they didn’t share your sentiment. They were probably hesitant to commit (if they ever even did), and this put a bad taste in your mouth as well. They loved their independence to a fault, and you couldn’t deal with their flakiness and false promises anymore. However, the great, fun times you two shared together will always be in your heart; they truly did know how to make a good memory. 

Capricorn South Node: Your first love was structured and ambitious, constantly on the road to self-improvement. There was never any question about where they were going in life, which was good for them but sometimes hard for you to deal with. With this incredible mental energy came distance and indifference on their part which never sat right with you. You saw all the wonderful workings of their mind, but you also felt the sting of them frequently rejecting you in little ways. There was always some problem in the world that was more important than their investment in what you two had and other people may have taken precedence over you in their eyes. However, you’ll always look back fondly on how you could be your honest, true self around them without fear because they wholeheartedly accepted you.

Pisces South Node: Your first love was other-worldly and enigmatic; they seemed like they came straight from a page in a storybook. They were very sweet and empathetic, always miraculously understanding why people were the way they were and having compassion for them. Their tendency to escape and, therefore, not deal with reality, however, created a rift between the two of you. You didn’t like how they saw people through rose-colored glasses and sacrificed their own happiness for that of others. It hurt you to see them be so frequently and significantly influenced and manipulated by others, but you also acknowledged their part in it. So I left y’all off at being extremely pissed at my therapist for even mentioning the possibility of medications while undergoing PTSD treatment. There were a lot of hurt emotions swirling around me, horrified by the notion. I have to admit that I mused over brewing up some dark nightmares for the poor man just trying to do his job. Either because I knew Mercury is retrograding or I’m actually a better person than I believe, I refused to take any action, and quietly seethed. Also picked some summer black berries to get into the swing of the season. And disassociated, delving into the wonderful world of Steven Universe now that I’ve obtained Hulu. I did the adult thing. Instead of the Petty!Alizar thing. Hey, isn’t there a meme that says if you pay for your own Netflix, you’re partially a real adult? Well, I got both now. Hooray me.

What snapped me out of my writhing ego was a fluctuating constant. What in the ever-loving fuck is a “fluctuating constant”, you ask? It’s a theory I’ve developed in my time traveling adventures! Specifically, on how to tell if the time lines around you are shifting. It’s really simple. In fact, it’s so simple that most people would call this common sense. The “Law of Fluctuating Constants” states that if a drastic change occurs, particularly in the case of something which has remained the same for a long time, it denotes a major shift of time lines around you. And in tangent, the shift of your own personal time line as well.

Let me throw some examples at you. Let’s say that you drive by a school on your way to work. You’ve been driving by this school for six years now. There’s a crosswalk that always, always, has this zealous traffic guard who feels the need to blow their whistle every other second. Sometimes you turn the dial of your radio up, hoping to drown out the shrill noise with some of your own. This is a habitual thing. So habitual it’s become a rock in your world. The sun will always rise, the bills will always be due, and that traffic guard will always blow their annoying whistle at you. Until one morning suddenly…the crosswalk is gone. It’s moved over to another street that you don’t drive by. It feels disorientating at first but you shrug and go along your way, never the wiser, and not connecting the dots when something in your life changes drastically too. Okay, let’s hit you with another example: You and your family always go to brunch on Sunday. And without fail, your family always picks Waffle House. Your father will always go for the omelette. Your brother always orders the banana crepes. And your coffee always comes with packets of sweetener and half and half. Except one Sunday, you all go to Wafflehouse expecting the same, and it’s changed management. Wafflehouse is now a sports bar called “Burgerpulloza” and doesn’t offer anything similar to breakfast.

So basically when something “constant” in your reality abruptly changes, especially when it’s remained the same for a very long time, it implies that the time lines are rearranging themselves. And with that rearrangement, new events/algorithms in Earth’s simulation, are about to occur. The average Joe doesn’t pay attention to these things. It’s just another “weird thing” their brain can push under the rug and forget.

But for a Traveler like me who surfs on the waves of shifting time lines, a fluctuating constant is a huge deal! It means shit is going down.

Hello everyone. I’m up late tonight, drinking coffee and writing. I hope you’re all having an excellent day, and that it gets even better. Today, I’ll be talking about color magick theory, and also providing some helpful techniques for incorporating it into your practices.

What is color magick?

I’ve written profusely in the past about the relationship between symbols, magick, and reality. I strive to emphasize that I believe witchcraft (and all magick) to operate via building connections between the individual (microcosm) and greater realities (the macrocosm). The use of symbols allows us to develop more intense connections of this sort. In a way, when we speak of magick, anything and everything can be seen as a symbol for even greater things.

Naturally, to facilitate this process, symbols must resonate, ideally both with the individual and with the whole of reality. Without a doubt, symbols need to evoke strong emotions and sentiments to be used for maximum efficaciousness. Colors, of course, are symbols, but I think we all knew that. Color, though, is more than just a simple symbol-set like many others. 

Color is primordial - prior to writing, the invention of fire and civilization, even prior to the inception of language, there was color in the world, and humans experienced its richness. 

Our shared experiences of life on this planet have led to a highly universal conception of color, as I’ll discuss in a moment. The omnipresence of color in our daily experiences make shades and hues extremely accessible symbols for many of us, and this is quite easy to use in witchcraft.

Naturally, we all have internal symbol-sets. I’ve written about exercises a witch can do to learn their personal correspondences for various things, and these work for color, as well. In addition to our personal associations for colors, though, there exist many codified systems of color correspondences, originating both from the occult world and from the rich traditions of art. 

If you study these systems, you’ll find that they all vary, but there is a great degree of overlap, both between systems and between personal correspondences and cultural ones.

Relevant Historical Context

Associations for something as visceral and primal as color tend to develop organically. Early humans painted images of the animals they hunted in red ochre (one of the earliest paints). This is likely because they already associated red with the color of blood, and therefore with violence, the hunt, and bringing down the animal. 

Similarly, humans have observed the continual growth and renewal plant life that exists alongside us for millennia, and many cultures and people inherently come to associate the green color of chlorophyll-rich plants with growth and development. 

Probably associations like this have existed since before the invention of languages to talk about them. Later peoples assigned special value to colors that were rare in nature, such as the brilliant blue of the uncommon lapis lazuli gemstones. There are some popular authors who argue that humans only recently developed the ability to perceive these rare colors (like bright blue), but there’s little evidence to prove or disprove this theory. 

Regardless, humans have always had various associations for color, and these correspondences naturally flowed through human culture, spreading into more and more minds. 

While you of course can’t truly declare anything universal, you’ll find in studying color systems of various cultures that there is, in fact, a great degree of overlap, owing to our shared experiences as human beings. Traditions of color magick and fortunate colors have always existed, but alongside and overlapping them we also see the multifaceted world of artistic symbolism that has developed over the aeons.

The particular system of color theory I’d like to discuss today arises from what’s commonly called the Western Magical (or Mystery) Tradition, also known as the WMT. I am referring to the magical and mystical traditions that appeared over the centuries in the Western world, which were ultimately subject to a great degree of codification post-Enlightenment Era.

You may find separate, quite different systems of color symbolism in other magical and mystical traditions, and I do encourage you to investigate what your own path in particular says about color. Today, though, I’ll be focusing on a particular system of color magick associated with the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

In case you’ve not heard of them, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn was a quasi-Masonic secret society that operated in Victorian London. Though of spurious origins, the texts associated with the Order were incredibly influential in the magical revival of the early 20th century. Though it’s difficult to trace the origins of many of the Order’s teachings, some of them have clear precedent in prior Hermetic philosophy, and, in particular, Hermetic Qabalah.

The color magick theory taught by the Golden Dawn was quite a vast and complex system. It was believed to have been developed from earlier approaches by Moina and S. L. Macgregor Mathers. No doubt some amount of unverifiable personal gnosis or inspiration played a part in setting up the color system, but that hardly invalidates it. It has endured in various forms as a central fixture of Western magical thought for over a hundred years, and I suspect will continue to be useful for centuries to come. 

While the Mathers couple probably developed the system, it was popularized by the infamous Aleister Crowley, who incorporated it into his new system of Thelema and Thelemic Qabalah. This is most visible in his seminal work, 777 and Other Qabalistic Writings, where he lays out the color correspondences in a series of arcane tables. Crowley was known to describe this system and related concepts as a sort of metaphysical filing cabinet, allowing him to connect separate concepts for use in magick.

The tables in 777, visible here, associate a series of colors (as well as many other concepts) with the Hermetic Qabalistic system of the Tree of Life, but also with the astrological concepts that most of us are familiar with, such as the seven classical planets and twelve signs of the zodiac. More than that, though, Crowley lists (drawing from Golden Dawn material) four separate colors associated with each concept, arranged into schemas he calls “scales.” 

In the symbolic rendering of the Ten Holy Sephiroth in the Four Worlds there is another important set of factors to be considered, and these are the four colour scales classified by Crowley as the King scale, assigned to the Atziluthic World; the Queen scale, assigned to the Briatic World; the Emperor scale, assigned to the Yetziratic World; and the Empress scale, assigned to the Assiatic World.

These scales are each associated with one of the four Qabalistic worlds, which in turn correspond to the four elements most of us are familiar with. It would be fair to say that, for any astrological and/or Qabalistic concept, Crowley provides four separate, distinct colors, each with a different elemental association. Naturally, the symbolism goes quite a bit deeper than that, but for the sake of brevity, we’ll be focusing on just those concepts.

The Scales Themselves

Kabalistically, there are four sets of colors (one for each of the four Kabalistic Worlds) that are related to the Sephiroht. They are named after the court cards of the Minor Arcana of the Tarot. In the Golden Dawn, initiates were expected to know all of the color scales. However, for our purposes, the most important version of the colors for the ten Sephiroht is called the Queen Scale (hence the “Q.S.”), which are the colors given here. The Queen Scale colors are associated with the world known as B’ri-yah. Traditionally it is believed that it is more important to become familiar with the Queen Scale sephirotic colors than with the other scales of color.

The four scales called the King Scale, the Queen Scale, the Prince Scale, and the Princess scale, an obvious reference to the Tarot court cards, which in turn correspond to the four elements and many other concepts. The King Scale corresponds to Fire, the Queen Scale to Water, the Prince Scale to Air, and finally, the Princess Scale is associated with Earth. It really goes much deeper than this, but I suggest reading more about it on your own, as I can’t really explain the entire system of it here.

The King Scale, being associated with Fire, provides the essential color of the concept (such as a planet or sign). These are often described quite fancifully and are difficult to picture. That is by design - the idea is that the pure essence of a concept, such as Venus or Virgo, lies just beyond our grasp. Thus, these essences are associated with colors that often escape our eyesight.

The Queen Scale, though, is quite different. The colors listed for it tend to be easily visualized and conceptualized by us humans. It’s associated with the element of water, and the implication is that this element exists at a level easily grasped and understood. The Queen Scale represents concepts as they exist very close to our everyday reality. 

For this reason, it is by far the most popular set of color correspondences used by witches, magicians, and pagans today. Even the silliest witchy book that derides Crowley as “evil” will probably list the Queen Scale correspondences culled from his book, 777. It’s truly ubiquitous in the magical world these days, which is fitting given its place within the system.

The Prince Scale is made of colors that merge those of the King and Queen, which makes a great degree of sense, and, as noted, it corresponds to the element of Air. For more information about the other scales, I recommend perusing 777 itself, but for now, I would recommend focusing on, an choosing colors from, the Queen Scale for most applications. 

The Queen Scale is most strongly associated with the manifest universe, after all, and it makes sense to delve into it when trying to exercise your will in manifesting change in reality. You can, of course, combine the colors from the scales, or choose a particular scale based upon its associations (with, for example, an element), but the Queen Scale is usually the first scale you would learn or work with, either way.

When flipping through 777 or related sites, you’ve probably noticed, too, that they don’t resemble the “color magick” sections of modern witchcraft and occult books by any stretch of the imagination. Certainly the tables and scales have nothing in common with the long lists of purposes and associated colors found in many New Age books. Rather than sorting colors by magical intent, Crowley and his forebears assigned them to, as mentioned earlier, existing concepts in the Western Magical Tradition, such as the features of the Qabalistic Tree of Life. 

These, in turn, are associated with other concepts such as astrological entities (Mars, Mercury, Virgo, etc.) and even more concrete symbols like Tarot cards. This complex interweaving of symbols and color creates, in my opinion, a much richer and more fascinating approach to magick than merely choosing a color from a list of intentions. Oddly enough, though, the books that do have long lists of intentions and colors paired with them usually draw heavily from 777 and the Queen Scale in particular. 

For example, they will list “Green” for “Love Magick,”  an obvious reference to earlier traditions of associating the color emerald with Venus and the sphere of Netzach, both associated with love.

I’m going to be brutally honest and say that it’s very difficult (borderline impossible) to fully use the Queen Scale without at least a basic or cursory understanding of at least some of the systems surrounding it. This means that, to get the most out of this particular color theory system, you should be somewhat familiar with Hermetic Qabalah and/or astrology. 

Though I, personally, have studied Hermetic Qabalah a fair bit, prefer to look to the astrological associations of the colors when choosing to use them in ritual or spellcraft. This is probably because I’ve a bit of an obsession with the seven classical planets and celestial witchery in general. 

Using the Queen Scale

So, how do you use the Queen Scale? Well, let’s suppose you want to do a ritual or spell to get better grades in school and learn more quickly. If you’re familiar with astrology, you know that the intellect, and in particular academics, tend to be governed by Mercury. You might also know that the sign of Virgo is associated with a highly-disciplined, fastidious nature, and is ruled by Mercury.

You might decide to incorporate the powers of both Mercury and Virgo into the spell or ritual. Turning to the Queen scale, you would see that Mercury is associated with the color orange, and Virgo is associated with slate gray. Thus, you would decide to somehow use those colors in your spell to earn better grades. There are many different ways of incorporating colors into spellcraft. I’ll discuss them in detail in the second article in this series, which will focus exclusively on practical techniques.

Now, I’ve said over and over that if a symbol (of any sort) doesn’t resonate with you, choose another one. This is true even if books like 777 are telling you the symbol (in this case, a color) has a certain association. If the association isn’t present and strong in your mind, your magick will be somewhat weakened.

 The connection between the symbol and what it represents will be weak. Thus, it’s perfectly, 100% acceptable and definitely awesome if you just want to ignore things like the Queen Scale and create your own personalized scale of color, as many witches do. I’ve written up an exercise for finding your own symbolic correspondences, and it can easily work with a color as the given symbol. 

Another option, though, is to build an association in your mind where previously there was none. I personally refer to this process as charging a symbol (in this case, a color). In the above example, perhaps you don’t associate orange, personally, with the intellect, but would like to build that correspondence for practical purposes. In that case, you might begin by researching the history of orange as a color and it’s associations with the intellect, seeking to find a reason for the association. This will help you to solidify the connection between the two in your mind.

You might also engage in creative visualization or other techniques to associate the color with the concept. I’ve personally found that just immersing myself in the literature of the Western Magical Tradition has helped me to familiarize myself with the traditional associations and build strong mental connections with them. Nowadays, I use them regularly.

I want to emphasize before ending this article, though, that just because the Queen Scale and related systems are old and very complex doesn’t make them an objective standard, and there’s much to be said for innovation. You might find traditional color correspondences useful, or you might want to create your own! Either way is fine, and I hope you enjoy exploring the colorful world of magick!

cold anger: air mars (gemini/libra/aquarius) and virgo mars

This people are scaaary. They do get angry, don’t misunderstand me, but when they do it’s not about explosions and shouting, no. You can see the emotion leave their eyes and you know you’ve pissed them off. They won’t necesarilly say anything, they’ll treat you like a stranger, they will be cold and formal, so much you’ll doubt if you ever knew them at all.

When they reach their limit, they cut you with words and truths about yourself that may have not even been spoken outloud until that moment.

white hot anger: fire mars (aries/leo/sagittarius)

While air mars are patient and detached, fire mars are fireworks and loud words. This mars signs don’t take much to explode, they’re like powder, you just need a match. Attacking their ego is probably the quickest way to anger them. They are pretty childlike in that sense, actually, they shout and tell you what you did and then they go back to normal.

This may be quite surprising but I do find them as the type that “forgive and forget”.

Willing to physically fight you so be careful lol.

slow cooked anger: taurus and capricorn mars

This are some of the most patient signs, they deal quietly with your bullshit, throw you a mean look from time to time and keep going on. They may not find the point on telling you anything.

But once they have reached their peak, you don’t wanna be there. They lose their shit and tell you things as they are. This people don’t like to be angry, mostly because of their practical approach to things, so when they are, they just tell you things and move on. If you make the same mistake again, they’ll probably just cut you off.

This signs are extremely blunt, and say things as they are, which, even if they don’t want to can be pretty damaging to the other person.

hidden anger: water mars (cancer/scorpio/pisces) 

Water mars, like most things water, are quite complicated.

Given their passive nature, they hardly ever speak up when angry. They are just prone to giving the silent treatment and being slightly passive agressive from time to time.

Scorpio mars is the most conscious of their anger, though, so even if they are not passive agressive or anything, they do swallow their anger and keep it inside until they can’t anymore.

This signs are prone to holding grudges and taking revenge. Cancer and pisces may not actively seek it, but if the opportunity comes up, they will take it.

Scorpio mars on the other side, may be vengeful when they reach their limit, as well as self destructive and intense. They are the prime example of losing one’s shit.

Cancer and pisces mars are specially prone to crying when angry and love to play the victim.

A brief witch’s list: coping with depression

Anyone who has experienced depression, or is currently struggling with it, understands how much of a mental battle it is. You have stuff that you need and want to do, but you have zero motivation. Maybe you’re subconsciously feeling like you’re not worth it? Maybe you’re consciously being self destructive. Your anxiety is killing you because you’re supposed to be acting like a productive adult, or a responsible teenager, right? 

It’s ok - breathe. Over the years, I’ve come to realize that productivity, even for the smallest tasks, is key for me to help loosen the knots in my brain.
