One of the things Sam hated about exploring new territory, or at least territory that hadn’t been touched in awhile, was nature taking back what belongs to it. For the most part, he admitted it was pretty gnarly. He’d spent hours once in a rabbit hole of his own making, looking at pictures of abandoned parks and zoos. One thing the pictures didn’t show though? How it was on foot. The overgrown bushes and trails that were now covered up, the abundant wildlife, which included bugs. Sam at least had over-sprayed himself in bug repellent, but there was one thing he couldn’t avoid. Spiders. Thankfully, he’s been careful to avoid anything, or at least taken to carrying a large stick to tear any webs down before he walks head first into them.

Some are just too cool to tear down though, which is why he ducks around one full with a spider nest and keeps walking, that is until he hears footsteps following a few feet away. He turns back, head tilted and a frown pulling on his face. Sam brightens when he sees it’s just the new girl. He’s trying to recall her name when he notices the direction she’s headed. “Hey, watch-” He freezes, watching in horror as his whole body shudders with sympathy. “Out.”

                   [starts off with Sam burping, can hear slight splashing every few seconds] Oh- sorry. I think- I think I might be a little drunk? I don’t know. I only had like two beers, five max. But Sebastian says I’m a lightweight so. [a pause, Sam’s clearly shrugging] Hey, did you see how big the moon is tonight? It’s really pretty, like, so pretty. You know there’s gonna be an eclipse at the end of- [hiccup] at the end of the month? It’s a total lunar eclipse, a Blood Moon even. I better it’s gonna look so creepy. You know it’s gonna be like the LONGEST one of the 21st century? How cool is that? Of course, it’s gonna happen now while we’re here. This place is like the epitome of creepy. [beat of silence before an even bigger splash]

                   You wanna watch it together? We could use my telescope. We could set it up on the dock, I’m over here now. Have you ever gone night fishing? It’s- Shit. I think- I think I got something, something big. I’ll call you back, I think I’m almost out of t- [line disconnects]

it didn’t take a lot to phase sam, so at this point he wasn’t sure if the first week was actually better or worse when in comparison to this one. and at this point, one thing was clear to him, he needed some plain ol’ normalcy around here. so that meant an extended break from exploring and work, but since he didn’t want to be lazy and sit around reading his comics, he was currently out and tossing a football around instead. 

he’d contemplated taking out the soccer ball or even one of the hacky sacks he brought, but football had nearly always been a part of his life and so it won out. maybe later he’d convince a group to play a game of shirts and skins, for now he was grateful to see finn after awhile. yelling out, “finn! go long,” he held up the football and made a throwing motion, grinning. a few seconds later, he was shaking his head and raised his hand to shoo the other farther out. “dude, c’mon, go longer!” they’d both played qb and he wanted to see how how far they could take this.

   “Hello, Sam.”Hermione laughed at the sudden realization, shaking her head as she moved with him to look at the rest of the things in the shop, considering key chains weren’t going to cut it. “Better, now that I’ve had a taste of civilization, and yourself? Did you get everything you need? Well, minus souvenirs, of course. Considering they’re probably missing their big brother quite terribly, I might suggest stocking up on the chocolate.” Which she had considered for her parents, however given the fact they were both dentists that tried to stay away from sugar wherever possible, she decided against it.

        A snow globe? The brunette’s interested piqued at the mention of the snow globes. Hermione, being stuck in the summer mindset, obviously hadn’t so much as considered them, but considering some of the mountains still held snow, it wasn’t entirely out of the realm of possibility. “Hmm, you might be onto something, mister Evans.”  The curve of a smile remained as she swept over to the display case, still very much listening to him as he spoke, until of course he handed her one featuring the lake. 

      “Oh, I think this might be it.” Hermione grinned, expression thankful at her eyes met Sam’s just in time for  — “Sons of Anarchy?”  The look said it all, she hadn’t heard of it.  “I think this’ll do just fine, you saved the day.” And maybe a few postcards too. “I wouldn’t mind jewelery, but I’d be worried about it getting lost in the post.” The smaller boxes had a higher chance of getting lost in the system, and while a snow globe could break, she’d stuff the box full of packing peanuts in hopes of beating the odds. Laughing, she shook her head. “The only shots my parents drink are espresso, and even then, it’s a rarity.” The contemplative look on Sam’s face had her grinning, “Unless your parents are very laid back, or you’re intentionally trying to ruffle their feathers, I might hold back on considering them for your siblings.” Hermione teased. 

        His lips tugged up a little higher and Sam laughed with her before nodding “Good and I’m doing alright. I’m used to camping, maybe not in these conditions, but it is nice to be back somewhere I can reach my parents and siblings.” He grabbed a small notebook from his back pocket, flipping through it for a second before shaking his head. “Not yet, there’s still a few stuff I should get. What about you? And you’re right, definitely. I should send it out before we get back though, I don’t want to have it around camp and be tempted.” Even if he was already wondering how many push ups he’d have to do to make up for it.

        “You think?” He grinned, looking back at the snow globes now, tilting his head as he picked one up to examine it after handing another one off to Hermione. “They are really nice, plus, while it’ll be theirs, it’ll hopefully bring up good memories when you see it, you know?” Now he seemed to be contemplating getting one himself, lips pursing as he held it before putting it down a second later when he heard Hermione’s tone and saw her face. “You haven’t seen it? Haven’t heard of it? Oh my god, as soon as we’re back to civilization for good, we’re marathoning it, okay? They have the whole series on Netflix, plus I got all of the seasons on DVD.”

           There was a lot of excitement in his voice and he practically beamed at her next words. “Cool, I’m glad I could help. And yeah, that’s true. That’d suck to have it get lost, I think the snow globe is safer, just make sure to use bubble wrap and stuff the box with something.” He spoke almost with experience, but considering how many care packages he got from his family, it wasn’t really a mystery as to why. “Huh, I wonder if they make espresso shot glasses. But if it’s rare, then probably skip those and stick to the globe.” He nodded and laughed, setting the glasses down. “True, but I’d definitely settle for a tea cup or something, I know Stacey likes having tea parties.” Sam said it once again with experience and to his chagrin there was more than a few photographic pieces of evidence of him at one of the parties, dress and feather boa included floating around the Evans household.

          FUCK. The kid was making this too goddamn easy, case and point. Negan would personally make sure that made it into the front page, if not worked into the cover design somewhere. Some shit had to be immortalized forever and this, unfortunately for Sam, was without a doubt one of those things. “Too late, kid.” Negan’s laughter was unapologetic as he pushed closer and took the can from the other all in attempts to show him the right way to do things. “I mean, you got a point there, Evans.” His tongue pressed through his lips, turning to reign in the grin, but laughter spilled over all again because really, he did. This was exactly what Negan should have been expecting from not only just Sam, but the majority of kids that hadn’t lifted a finger before in their lives. 

         Wasn’t like it used to be, not back in the olden days. “Mhmmm, sure.” It sounded just as insincere and disbelieving as his expression looked, brow half cocked, nearly as high as the goddamn sun itself. “Sounds about right, Dick Fingers.” Better than Dick Sucking Lips, which could also be an applicable nickname once he had a few more beers in him. “Eh, between you and I, ya kinda look like Carrie anyways but — “ Untrue, but the lack of mirror currently only worked in Negan’s favor. “Throw on a vest, and hard hat and you look just like the guy from the Village People.” The era too. Fashion hadn’t necessarily gotten better over the eras, but girls wore a whole lot less. Than again, guys did too. Camp had harbored one too many crop tops, which is why his following statement made all the more sense. “Might as well just chop ‘em up, start a new goddamn trend. Worked for Kanye. Or go to fuckin’ town with the rubbing alcohol,” Really, it was Lucille that did the laundry prior, she worked some fucking serious magic with oil and grease, even paint, but he didn’t know the secret. Probably should have learned at some point. “That usually works, right?” With what little paint was left in the can, Negan took to pouring it out, careful to step around the pooled mess. “I mean, snow angels are out but might as well try and salvage some of it.”

            "You better sleep with one eye open, ‘cause I’m getting that phone and deleting the evidence of this,” Sam threatened, though it was probably hard to take serious when he was still half-covered in paint. He sighed and hesitated only a second before shucking off his jeans too, kicking away his shoes, and leaving him in his plaid boxers and white socks. If it was hard to take him serious before, it was probably even harder to now. “Don’t even think about taking your phone back out.” He pointed his finger, shaking it and probably looking exactly like his mother for a millisecond. “Exactly, I’m just glad I haven’t had any bigger accidents. I mean, I did almost cut off a finger yesterday, but in my defense I thought I saw a spider.” Thankfully, or unfortunately Sam hadn’t been banned from the power tools yet.

            He rolled his eyes hard, shaking his head vehemently a moment after. “Oh no, no. We’re not making that a thing, we’re not.” Because knowing the professor, he wouldn’t be surprised if he got called that at school or in class. There went his finger again, then they were all being thrown up in a huff before he ran them through his hair. “I don’t know if I should be offended or not, on one hand, she did have really cool powers, on the other hand, my mom is like, a thousand times better than hers.” Sam seemed to give it some thought and then cracked a smile, mind changing lanes instantly. “You know, I think there’s some hard hats in the main cabin.” He quickly did the arm arrangements for YMCA, musing, “I can’t remember if he’s the C or the A.” It wasn’t too hard for him to lose track of that too, face lighting up. “Oh man, Daisy Duke.” He quickly thought of her character and her trademark shorts, explaining no further. 

            He was deep in thought as he held the jeans up for inspection, Negan’s question caught him off guard and he lowered the pants enough to look at him. His head tilted much like a golden retriever’s and he squinted at the other before looking at the jeans. “Hmm, I think so? I’d have to call my mom to check, she’d know for sure.” Sam almost stuck his leg out to trip the other, but thought better of it, if there was a place he didn’t need to be, it was on the teacher’s bad side. “Snow angels, no, but paint angels? But you’re probably right, we can still use it.” He put his clothes aside and took a roller, putting it in the spilled paint, fine with continuing to work in his lack of clothes, almost like he’d already forgotten.

It was time. After a week of this place, they were nowhere near finished, but Sam felt enough progress had been made that maybe having some fun wouldn’t be so bad. Plus, maybe he was still taking a break after wasting so much paint and his expedition of the camp had turned up some worrying effects. Thankfully now, he wasn’t having any trouble filling up some water balloons. He’d lost count of how many after eight, using a few buckets to place them in the nearby area to have a full blown water fight. He also got his water gun full for back up, testing it out on a tree before finally getting in position for his first victim.

Sam was sure of who it’d be, seeing the other pass by earlier. But when he finally leaped out and threw that water balloon at the person, he paused after, stating, “You’re not Makoto.” Then again, maybe that was a blessing. He held up his water gun and pointed toward the bucket of ammunition and then Johnny. He hadn’t talked to the other boy much, other than to plead for a s’more in a very weak moment, but he hoped he was game. In his best Clint Eastwood, Sam rasped, “You've gotta ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?”

Hearing a voice and a guitar playing from inside his tent drew Cedric back out towards the fire to listen.  He wasn’t getting sleep yet anyway.  Laying in the tent with the roof zipped open looking up at the stars was a great way to relax but it just wasn’t doing it for him when it came to drifting off.  Seems like someone else was having the same issue.  He knew that voice.  Sam Evans.

What he didn’t expect was when he was within a close enough distance to feel the warmth of the fire, Sam was bolting up ready to pummel him with his beloved instrument.  Both of Cedric’s hands shot up and he bit back a laugh by chomping down on the inside of his bottom lip.  Hard.  His eyes squinted and the wrinkled brow gave him away anyway.  In a beat, he ran his tongue over his bottom lip and palmed the back of his neck with one hand while slowly lowering the other.  “Thank you for looking before swinging,” he grinned unable to not chuckle at least a little.  “Just me.”  The spot beside Sam was soon occupied as he plopped down smiling at how Sam pet his guitar like a dog.  “Requests?  How about…  Paradise?  The one by Coldplay.  You know it?  Anything mellow.  Sleep’s been a bugger.”

Sam played it cool in response to the other’s poorly hidden amusement, or at least as cool as he could. He ended up breaking only a second in, cracking a grin and glancing down as he played a chord on his guitar. He was definitely happy he didn’t have to beat anyone with it, damaging her would hurt him too. “You’re welcome, I’m just glad it’s you and not some weird mountain cannibal.” 

He shuddered, remembering Sebastian’s description and body parts in jars. Briefly, Sam wondered if he’d taste any good, but that tied into whether or not he thought he had any meat on him to actually eat. He was thankfully pulled out of his thoughts when Cedric sat down beside him and he grinned at the request, nodding. “Yeah, I think it’s hard to find anyone that doesn’t. You gonna sing with me though? It’s not counting sheep, but maybe it could help you?” He raised an eyebrow, smile settling as he started playing the first few notes of the song and looking at the other encouragingly. It didn’t take him long to start singing after, nudging Cedric a little with his elbow. When she was just a girl she expected the world.

        it’s been a day. after the paint incident of summer 2018, sam needed to take a break from anything resembling work, or at least work that was fixing up the campsite. instead, the blond decided to continue on his adventure of mapping out the area. he took a travel oack filled with first aid supplies, water, some snacks and a few comics just in case he wanted to take a break. he at least left word with scott that he’d be gone and if he didn’t come back, a general area of where he’d most likely be. he was there now, exploring and continuing to draw in his journal. he’d just passed a tree, one now sporting a small ‘s’ carved into it. he’d been marking them as he went, not wanting to get too lost in the woods.

        he’s definitely grateful for them later, when he’s rushing back to the main part of camp. he’s waving his phone around, approaching the first person he sees to show them the pictures on it. “look what i found! it was at a cabin way out there in the east side of camp, i don’t think any of us have found it yet. it looks pretty old too, so does the underwear, but like, i wonder who did it? do you think they tried to sacrifice a virgin?” sam tips the phone screen back to himself so he can squint at it and point out everything, zooming in on the pair of panties and pentagram to shove in the other’s face.

Oh Sam. It’s best you stop looking like a snack before someone gets the wrong idea and decides to see how literal they can take it. The thing is, you realize entirely that you’re not the first kids to stumble upon the grounds and given the decades untouched? Graffiti and general teenage fuckery isn’t exactly unheard of, and respect for property hadn’t ever really been enforced. Cabin Repair Extraordinaire might be your new nickname, but what happens when you venture a little too deep in the grounds and find a relatively untouched one? At least by UCCS. Stained wood isn’t nothing to sneeze at, but if you squint … It kind of, sort of, almost looks like a pentagram. But hey, free panties! Even if they’re a solid four decades old. Maybe. You’re no pantie expert. Or are you?

       “Now there is no fuckin’ way in hell that ain’t gonna make it to the yearbook.” Negan boomed, a mighty chuckle on his face as he snapped a few pics of the utter fucking disaster before him. “Face’a the goddamn Coachella rip off right there.” How hard was it to open a can of paint, pour it into the tray, and roll it over the death and decay that clung to the cabin walls? Really, they shouldn’t have been painting them to begin with given the wood used and the dampness that inherently clung within it, but what other choice did they have to try and shove off the smell? Burn it down and start building anew? He wasn’t exactly looking to turn himself into Tim The Tool Man Taylor this summer, even with what little intention he did have. 

       “You got dick fingers or somethin’?” Negan lowered his phone, brow cocked expectantly waiting for an answer that made some sort of sense. The splatter on the floor and the scrape marks, along with the fact that their front (including their clothes and hands) was colored the same white told a much different story. One of utter klutziness, or some fuckery, he wasn’t sure which. With a few afternoon beers pushing through him, and the summer sun ushering him into the cabin, away from it’s all too intense rays, he strode forward lazily, slipping his phone into his back pocket and grabbing the can, the half empty can, from their hands. “No one showed you how to pour a can before?” Monkey see, Monkey hopefully do a whole lot better next time. 

         There’s times when Sam’s reflex are almost superhuman, you can’t play that much video games and not have at least some good hand-eye coordination. He plays numerous sports to boot. But there are times when his body gets the better of him, tragically this is one of those times. For a few seconds, his brain freezes too and he just stands there while the paint soaks into his clothes, skin, the cabin floor. Negan’s voice kick starts it back up though and he makes a face at the camera and the person holding it. Only all too late he finally says, “Nooooooo. Don’t!” He groans and then his face makes such a look, first at Negan and then at his fingers. It changes slightly at the latter, like he’s picturing actual dick fingers. It’s not sure if he finds it horrifying or cool, it’s probably both.

      Either way, he shakes it off and this time he’s more resigned when he looks at his teacher. “You of all people can’t be surprised that happened.” He’s lost count of how many times he’s face planted in the other’s class, dropped textbooks or other things. Once Sam walked straight into a wall, all thanks to an image Negan had up on the wall. “Yeah, plenty, but it slipped when I was trying to get it open.” He winces, remembering and knowing he should’ve done it while it was on the ground instead of in his arms. With the formidable paint can gone, Sam once again looks at the disaster surrounding him. Lips pursed, he tries to keep the look off his face as he manages to take off his now white shirt. “Do you think there’s any saving it? This or my jeans? I guess I should be happy it wasn’t red paint... Or else I’d look like Carrie.”

WHAT DID YOUR CHARACTER BRING BACK TO CAMP WITH THEM:

Basically Sam brought back anything he forgot the first time around, plus stuff he realized he’d need after all. He’s seriously kept a thorough list too in one of his journals. (It’s the pocket-sized one he keeps in his back pocket most of the time. He writes little notes to himself in it and also jokes or impressions he likes.)

A lot more sunscreen and aloe vera gel in case the worse happens.

Travel size stuff of shampoo, soap, conditioner, floss, toothpaste, toothbrush. Razor and shaving cream.

You better believe he’s drowning in dad hats and sunglasses.

Plaid, more plaid always.

A slightly bigger tent, one with a flap to look up at the stars while he tries to sleep.

Lots of pillows, blankets, an extra sleeping bag.

Tools, tool belt, all that jazz. Most of it’s been sitting in the tool box attached to his truck, that he finally decided to bring along since he missed it.

Hunting knife, a personalized swiss army super tinker his parents bought him when they found out about the trip, it has his initials SJE. That includes a compass that has them that they got him during cub scouts.

His paintball gun and a whole lot of ammunition for it.

Balls. Lots of them. Footballs, tennis balls, soccer balls, a kickball, baseballs, volleyballs, he might’ve lifted a lot of it from the school, but they needed something to do, right? Also frisbees and some haky sacks.

Water guns and water balloons because it’s summer, hello.

So much fucking fishing gear, it’s not even funny.

LAMPS, flashlights and so so so many batteries to power them, though one of them comes with a crank.

You know that boy isn’t going without some walkie talkies, okay.

And if you didn’t believe how big of a nerd this boy is, he bought a whittling kit.

He also of course, brought a telescope. (s/o to july 2 where he literally just sat around with binoculars while it was day then his telescope at night looking for ufos for ufo day.)

Lots of water, whether in bottle form or in numerous canteens, hydration packs, Sam brought his own personal water filter.

Camp cookware, including a grill rack. FOOD. (Pasta but,,,,,,,,,,,, it came with his art supplies which he brought so.......... probably not to eat) But healthy snacks so he’s not tempted with good snacks. But seriously, a lot of camping food and he totally keeps it bear safe because you never know.

Fire starting kits, matches, lighters, that boy got it all.

Lots of rope, all kinds of it, including cords for snares.

Predictably, more comic books.

A VERY BIG AND WELL SUPPLIED FIRST AID KIT. With road flares, emergency blankets, hand sanitizer, duct tape, bobby pins and hair ties, (He be sportin that man bun sorry.)  

WHAT DID YOUR CHARACTER DO WHEN THEY GOT BACK TO CIVILIZATION:

Sam hung out with Hermione and Billy for a hot minute each. Of course he also updated each bit of social media he’s on and contacted his family. Then he was all about those supplies.

WHAT’S BEEN THE BIGGEST ADJUSTMENT OF CAMP LIFE?

Not talking to his family every day, but other than missing them, that boy is completely peachy keen. He’s loving the outdoors and doesn’t mind working or getting to hang out with his friends.

HOW ARE THEY HOLDING UP?

Balancing work and play, sometimes he does the former more and has to remind himself to chill every now and then. Sam is literally all smiles still, he’s having the time of his life. 

ANY HOT GOSS?

Sam’s been observing like crazy, he’s definitely gone exploring as much as he can. Is he drawing his own little map of everything? maybeso,gif He’s not finished though so he’s looking forward to it. He’s talked to a few people and has tried avoiding some too (HANNIBAL). If he’s spreading anything around, its sunblock or any other supplies he has overstocked that someone else needs. Also sorry Will, but Sam Evans and Scott McCall are literally plotting to steal your dog. :/
