Review: American Gods by Neil Gaiman

American Gods is about a regular guy named Shadow Moon. Ridiculous name I know. Shadow is released from prison, suffers a tragedy before he even gets home, and is swept away by a mysterious man, named Mr. Wednesday, whom he agrees to work for. Basically it’s about how gods of all different religions and cultures were brought to America and now the old gods (norse, hindu, egyptian, etc.) are fighting a war with the new gods (the internet, media, the men in black, etc.) and Shadow gets dragged into it. 

First up, I love Neil Gaiman. Stardust is one of my favorite books of all time. I enjoy his writing for the most part. But Shadow is the most boring protagonist I’ve ever had to suffer through. He doesn’t react to things like a normal human being. If a guy you happened to sit next to on an airplane somehow knew your name and everything about you - you’d be freaked. Shadow does get uncomfortable and decides to not take the plane and drive a rental car home instead. Then he runs into that SAME strange guy in a random bar on his way home. He doesn’t even react at all. Wouldn’t you like run from the place screaming? Or at least question HOW HE GOT OFF THE PLANE THAT YOU WATCHED TAKE OFF AND THEN SOMEHOW FOUND YOU!? Well Shadow doesn’t. He doesn’t even get that freaked out over a dead relative coming back to life, as basically a conscious zombie that doesn’t eat people, and shows up in his hotel room. Once again, I’d run screaming. Not sit and have a very calm conversation with them. 

Anyway, I’m a huge mythology fan in general so I knew most of the gods mentioned even if their name wasn’t specifically said. I liked the cool hints to what gods they were but if you’re not a mythology fan and know very little, a LOT of this book is going to go over your head. 

I felt like the book was very long winded. Everything going on was too vague to understand what was going on. It was basically a huge snoozefest other than the Coming to America short stories spread throughout the book.

Rating: Would Only Buy If It Was On Sale

Review: Armada by Ernest Cline

I read this right after I finished Ready Player One because I figured since I loved that book that I’d love this one. Oh boy was I sooooo wrong. 

The book is about a 17 year old boy named Zack. He’s a gamer who plays a game about fighting aliens in space with ships etc. His dad passed away in an accident when Zack was a baby which has lead to him having a severe anger issue. A crisis arises and he’s pulled into his dad’s conspiracy theories which challenges reality as he knows it.  First of all the similarities between Zack and Wade (protagonist of Ready Player One) are annoying. They’re both white males, who are about to graduate high school, who have a deceased father (in Wade’s case it’s both parents), their father’s left behind nerdy stuff for them (comics, video games, etc.), they’re both gamers who basically live in their game of choice and are both excellent at what they do, they both fall in love with the first girl they meet and she returns the feelings, and there are tons of 80′s references. The plot of this book is actually mentioned in Ready Player One as a one sentence fly-by.  The differences are slight, Zack has an anger issue where as Wade is a pretty chill dude, Zack’s mom is still alive, Zack has real life friends that he sees in-person, and there’s no virtual reality in Armada.  You’re probably thinking “if they’re that similar then this book should be good if RPO was really good.” Yeah, no. This book is so poorly written it feels like the author just published one of his first stories he wrote in high school but didn’t edit it or make it better. The plot takes place over a single day. That might be cool in some stories but for this one? It’s completely unbelievable. Zack’s main character trait is that he has this super bad temper which lead him to nearly beat another kid to death who talked crap about Zack’s dad. By chapter 9, that temper totally disappears and there are PLENTY of situations it should have come up. The main plot isn’t even introduced until the end of chapter 9. 

Basically I don’t know how the same author did this garbage fire and a great book like Ready Player One. This book just felt like a rip off of Ender’s Game with terrible writing and characters that are paper thin and a boring plot. Not to mention the ending was so sudden I literally said out loud “that’s it?”

Rating: Would Return It For Another Book

Review: Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

This book may sound over hyped but it truly is a great riddle/puzzle/detective novel. To sum it up the story is about a man named James Halliday. Halliday created The Oasis, which is a virtual reality universe with epically realistic graphics, in which nearly the entire world’s population spends time in (going to school, working, hanging out with friends, visiting worlds based on their favorite fandoms, etc.). Halliday passes away and has no heir to inherit his very large fortune and controlling share of The Oasis. He created an “easter egg” in The Oasis that can only be found by a series of complicated riddles based on his favorite era - the 80′s. The main character is a 17 year old nerdy gamer kid who is obsessed with finding the egg and you follow his story of trying to complete his quest. 

I personally didn’t know most of the 80′s nostalgia mentioned since I didn’t become a gamer until the PS2 existed and I’m a baddie who hasn’t seen a lot of popular 80′s movies or tv shows. However, I liked the references I did get (LadyHawke, fuck yeah). 

The plot was gripping and I genuinely liked the protagonist, hated the villain, and wanted to keep reading. Wade is a relatable character in the sense he’s an overweight, recluse, who spends nearly all his time in the virtual reality of The Oasis. I actually didn’t physically READ the book, I use audiobooks while I’m driving, but it was so good that I wanted to go driving just so I could find out what happens. 

I felt like the ending was a bit abrupt but since a sequel is being written I can forgive that. 

In conclusion I think the book is well written and probably one of the best books I’ve read in the last 10 years.

I honestly thought when my grandma was dying that I could confront my fear. I literally watched as she died and took her last breath. I heard her death rattle, which I didn't even know was a thing, and honestly - it just made things worse. I remember (when my depression was at its worst) a time when I was kissing this guy in his car. He started to choke me while we were kissing and got really out of hand with it. I remember thinking "this is how I go out. Being strangled by a guy cheating on his girlfriend in the back of a parking lot." It's weird having depression and being terrified of dying. They're two polar opposite things - at least you would think. But in that moment I wasn't scared and I don't know why. Between trying to sign up for cosmo school, trying to make uber work out, and dealing with my endometriosis (on top of the recent sit with the fires) I've been in a terrible mindset and I can't shake it. People don't realize that depression never really goes away. It can lie dormant for years but it's always there to greet you like an old evil friend when the chips are down. It's a war where winning only means it hasn't killed you yet.
