This is me rambling about how confused I am about the pronouns used in the french translation of the dialogue when Romeo is referring to P and/or Carlo ✨

I've been playing in French since the start, and there's always been something that bothers me about the way Romeo talks to P and/or Carlo. In French, ‘you’ can be translated in two ways: ‘vous’ or ‘tu’. 'Vous' is used in formal, polite, and professional contexts, mainly with strangers and professionals such as doctors, etc while 'tu' is used between friends, lovers and family, as opposed to 'vous'.

Basically, no one in France uses “vous” with their friends or lovers. NO ONE.

So when I think about the relationship between Romeo and Carlo, whether platonically or romantically, I immediately think that the pronoun 'you' should be used since they were really REALLY close BUT-

Romeo used 'vous'! Why?? That's so... weird. But then someone might say: he's talking to P, not Carlo, so it's normal that he's not as familiar as he is with Carlo.

But 'vous' is really a pronoun that puts a lot of distance between two people, so even when Romeo is talking to P and not Carlo, the usage seems awkward to me. Like, remember his boss introduction? He's trying to be friendly with P! Not distant and formal!

But it's NOT stopping there!!

HE'S ALSO USING 'VOUS' WHEN TALKING TO CARLO

(well it's actually 'vos' but basically, 'vos' is 'yours' but it's the same thing as 'vous' is 'you' but more formal and distant)

I SWEAR IT FEELS SO WEIRD! Even if it's been so many years since Romeo last saw Carlo, why put so much distance between them?

It's really hard to describe, but Romeo's sentences sound so awkward to me in French because I don't feel like he's talking to a childhood friend or more. Maybe that's what the translators wanted to convey? The fact that Romeo hasn't communicated with Carlo in so long that everything has become awkward? I don't know, but it's a really odd choice, and I think the pronoun 'tu' would have been more appropriate.

In fact, as far as I remember, I think Romeo uses 'tu' in his letter to Lea, and Lea also uses 'tu' in her message to Carlo, which is obvious since they were all very close and were a family. I'm not entirely sure, I'll check that tomorrow.

Anyway, sorry for the long and potentially incoherent post. I have other screenshots of moments when Romeo uses 'vous' instead of 'tu' with P and/or Carlo, which makes it sound weird, but I thought it would be too long and not interesting.

A ramble session about Romeo because I haven’t been doing well these past few days and talking about him helps me feel better. This is going to be extremely out of order from the timeline and disjointed as thoughts just come to my mind, I apologize in advance for my writing going all over.

There will be a lot of spoilers for the game and DLC in this post so read at your own caution.

I find Romeo’s story incredibly tragic because not only does his fate follow with a lot of past versions of him (Lampwick/Romeo always dying or having an ambiguous fate with the main game and Overture basically providing both). He’s an orphan at the Monad Charity House that finally gets a form of family through Carlo and Lea, he has so many items with sentimental value relating to them, the locket, the photo of the three of them together, more than likely his ring is a gift from one or both as well. But everyone gets taken from him so swiftly and brutally when he himself also meets such a brutal end for no reason. Romeo had no stakes in the bigger plans being orchestrated by the Alchemists and Geppetto, he was literally an innocent caught up in all the bloodshed just for being one boy’s friend.

The fact that he will be blamed for the Puppet Frenzy because of being forced into the role as the King of Puppets add to how unfair his situation is. He never wanted this role, fought with all his willpower to overwrite the programming of the Grand Covenant just to help P realize he’s being used because this puppet is meant to be another version of his best friend and he doesn’t want him to die a second time. He sounds like he’s sobbing in his line of asking “Who’s the puppet, you or me?!”, trying in vain to get P to remember something about him, fully believing he can get Carlo back even as his mind is being scrambled from the flames and damage to his body.

Loading screen text seems to suggest some part of him working with Geppetto was willing on his part, but not with being turned into King of Puppets based on his description, but with the introduction of his part in Overture, it throws this into more ambiguity because of Romeo’s reaction at the end of the DLC with his smile to Lea when faced with the Nameless Puppet. He wouldn’t have wanted his mentor to die, he just wanted her to heal or live as long and comfortably as possible, which was why he took the mission to Krat Zoo alone in the first place. While he was a brilliant and skilled fighter, he was no match for Arlecchino and quickly defeated and tortured just to hurt Lea when he wasn't involved in defeating the Mad Artist.

This young man has lived a lonely life as a child, lost the two most important people in his life that became his family, was horrifically tortured and then killed for his Ergo, then brought back to life to be used as a figurehead and scapegoat. He stayed so strong throughout it all, but is at the end of his mental rope by the time he is fought in the Opera House, with it heavily being implied he didn't plan to survive the fight whether he won or lost, especially since in his own view, he ended Carlo's second life by his own hand. It does feel like a mercy for him to finally be at peace, as much as it hurts that a character I adore so much may not return to the series, he at least got an end where he's reunited with his family.

Please Neowitz, don't torture my boy anymore.

And interpret anything related to Romeo and Carlo’s relationship as platonic or romantic, I lean more towards the latter.

It's warmly strange how Lies of P (and Soulsborne games in general) makes me want to be more creative about my arts. I've got dozens of drafts about headcanons I have or ideas for my future drawings, I even plan to make a plushie of Romeo like I did with Sugiura from Judgment. It's not that I never feel like drawing or being creative, it's just that my love for this game makes me more passionate about what I do. I... don't know if it makes sense..? I don't know if people think the same way or if I'm just crazy (I still have a hyperfixation on these games it's almost unheathly).
