If there was a man you knew you could always count on, it would be your dad. He was always there for you, never broke your heart and always believed you would achieve whatever it was you wanted to achieve.
When you first received the news, your heart shattered. You were having a great day with him, a father-daughter date just a few months after you found out your parents were planning on divorcing. But then he started coughing out blood, you remember how traumatized you were, the paramedics had to do a check up on you. It was horrible.
But here you were now, almost two years later, at the same fair you had been when you first found out.
âLet me win you a stuffed animal.â You wiggled your eyebrows, making your dad laugh as he took the cotton candy from your hand to let you play the game.
You were the youngest out of four, so naturally, you were your dadâs favorite. Sure, he loved all of his children equally, but he saw himself in you. The strong part and the weak part, but at the same time, he knew how much stronger you were than him.
âWeâre going to be here all day if you keep trying to win me something, hon.â
You scoffed at his comment. He was right, unfortunately. You were never good at this kind of games, maybe at Mario kart, but never at the ones that had targets
âDude, I swear Iâll win you something! Even if itâs the littlest thing ever!â You shot the gun, hitting the target. You cheered loudly, earning a few looks from other people.
You turned to your dad who also cheered, giving you thumbs up. You smiled proudly and kept playing, and after a while, you won a stuffed animal. A very small one, but it was a stuffed animal.
âWell, will you look at that? My daughter is not a failure. Iâm proud.â He held the stuffed animal to his heart. You hit his arm, making him laugh. âIâm joking. You did great, kiddo.â
âWell, duh!â You rolled your eyes playfully.
He gave you your cotton candy back and you took a big bite out of it, the candy sticking to your face. And it was at that moment where your dad realized you were just a little girl to him, his little girl.
And funnily enough, you didnât even like cotton candy like that. You just bought it because your dad thought it was your favorite, you accepted it of course, you didnât want to disappoint your dad. He was the last person you wanted to disappoint.
A few hours later, you and your dad were walking across town after leaving the fair. You stumbled across a tteokbokki stand and obviously had to buy some. So now, you were sitting on one of the few empty benches, both hungrily stuffing your mouth with the tteokbokki.
âThis reminds me of the tteokbokki I used to buy after school.â You said between bites.
Your dad scrunched his nose in disgust. âIs that why you never ate at home?â He asks.
You froze then continued eating, shaking your head. âI donât like momâs cooking.â You confessed, making him laugh out loud.
âDonât be mean.â
âItâs the truth!â You sputtered as you swallowed the food. âSeriously, went oh first left, the house smelled like it was being burnt down. Iâm being serious.â He laughed, making you laugh. âDonât laugh!â
He covered his mouth to stop himself from laughing, making you smile widely, eyes completely shut.
âOkay, so,â he poked his food. âTell me about your life lately, hon. Any drama?â You furrowed your eyebrows at his question, making him shrug. âCan a dad not want to be in the drama?â
You snorted. âYouâre so weird.â
âYou are the only one who seems to think that.â
You played with your food and shrugged. âIâve been good. No dramaâŠthat bad.â You answered.
Your dad hummed, âthat was a little susâŠâ
âYou did not just say sus, dad.â He chuckled, âfine, Iâll give you tea. Supposedly, a girl from my school bewitched Jaeyun to make him fall out of love with me or something,â you shrugged casually.
âThatâs insane.â He said, âwould you hate me if I said I believed itâs true?â You stared at him, âthat kidâs in love with you. No spell could make him feel otherwise.â
âWere youâŠwere you not there when I told you what happened before I left for New York?â You tilted your head in confusion.
He nodded. âOf course I was, sweetheart. You guys are young, you go through things all the time, itâs part of life.â
âShould I be taking advice from someone who got cheated on by the same person theyâve been with since they were seventeen?â
He gasped, held his heart and frowned. âThrow a dagger at my heart and it wouldâve hurt less, honey.âÂ
You chuckled, âSorry.â
Your dad nodded and placed his utensil on the plate. âMaybe not advice, but when your mother and I first started dating, we also had our ups and downs in university. Itâs a big change of scenery, people change. And sometimes it does damage relationships but thatâs why we communicate with each other.â You stayed silent during his talk, âNow, I don't know what you kids are up to now-a-days, but I do know rumors are a huge thing around your generationâlike to ruin relationships and everything. Jakey was dumb to believe that girlâs words over yours, bewitched or not, and let me tell you,â He gestured you to scoot closer, and you did. âHeâll regret those words forever. They will haunt them whether you forgive him or not. Because now he knows he treated you wrong, he shouldâve known from the start, but that's what we call progress. It takes time to fix your mistakes. Jakey is a good boy, heâll learn from his mistakes. But you donât have to forgive him if you think itâs whatâs best.â
You frowned, not really knowing what to say.
âI know he still loves you dearly. Just like how I love your mom.â
At that, you looked up at your dad. âYou still love her? After what she did to you?â
He shrugged, a sincere smile appearing on his lips, eyes sparkling. âItâs hard to let go of someone youâve loved for a very long time.â
You nodded, a sudden memory of Jake running through your mind. âI spoke to him on Christmas, he told me he saw youâŠdid you guys talk?â
He chuckled and nodded.
âDonât you worry, child.â You rolled your eyes, making him smile. âI had to make him open his eyes, just gave him a small piece of advice.â
âAnd youâre not going to tell me what it is, huh?â
âThatâs a conversation I hope he has with you one day.â
After hours of being outside, you and your dad finally arrived at his house. The last time you were here, he passed out and you had to go to the hospital. This time, you were hoping nothing like that would happen again.
âAh, I like this weather.â He said, taking off his coat and putting it on the armrest of the couch.
You smiled at him and nodded, taking off your shoes then made your way inside. Your eyes immediately flew to the table, where a small bouquet of flowersâ very familiar ones â stared right at you. âWho got you these flowers?â You asked, letting your fingers leave a delicate touch to them.
Your dad glanced at you, still untying the laces to his shoes. âUh, Jakey came by a few days ago.â He casually said. âCan you water them? I keep forgetting to do so.â He asked.
You nodded even though he couldn't see and let your hand fall from the flowers. You shook your head and moved to the kitchen, grabbed a small cup of water and made your way back to the table where the flowers sat. You watered the plants slowly, too focused as if they were your own. Jake had visited your dad. Why?
âWe had a good chat. Told me heâs seeing a therapist.â Your dad snapped you out of your thoughts as you nodded, turning to him. âHe came by to wish me an early birthday.â He explained.
âDid he?â
He nodded.
You nodded back.
Something that you always adored about Jake was how good he got along with you dad. You didnât think that after all this time, he still made time and the effort to see him. It only reminded you of how nervous he was to meet him for the first time even though they had already met, and how your dad was playfully planning to tease him just to see how he would react. It was bittersweet.
âTheyâre pretty.â You complimented the flowers before walking into the bedroom your dad had built for you. The same room where he kept the remaining withered flowers of the first bouquet Jake had given your dad when they officially met after he asked you out.
âYouâre being so dramatic.â
âIâm not being dramatic. Your dadâs scary.â
Jake whispered as you let him inside the house. With a small laugh, you said, âyou play basketball every Sunday with him.â
âHeâs a very scary man, Y/n. What if he kills me?â
âI doubt he will.â You whispered back, entering the kitchen where the rest of your family were. âHe likes you too much.â
âHi.â Jake awkwardly waved the flowers in his hands, a few petals falling to the floor.
âOh God.â You snorted, making Jake quickly pick up the petals and hand the flowers to your mom and dad.
âFlowers for me?â Your dad took his hand to his chest, âIâve never received flowers.â He turned to your mom and frowned. âI canât fake it anymore.â
He turned to Jake, whose eyes widened when he approached him and gave him a tight hug. âYou and I will have a conversation, young boy. But other than that, welcome to the family!â He exclaimed.
Jake laughed nervously, hugging him back as he gave you a side eye, screaming for help. You giggled, walking over to your mom. âPlease help him.â You muttered.
âHoney, leave him alone!â
Your dad quickly pulled away from the young boy. Jakeâs ears warmed up, making him shyly smile as he walked to your side, âI just thought itâd be a nice gesture. I hope it wasnât too much, sir.â He bowed.
âItâs perfect, future son-in-law.â
You covered your face in embarrassment, making the others laugh.
You fell back on the bed, looking at the white ceiling in thought. You couldnât help but to wonder; what if your mother never cheated on your dad? What if what happened with Jake never did? Would you still be a happy family today? Have dinners like the ones you used to have? The thoughts ran through your mind so much, you hadnât even realized youâd fallen asleep. You didnât even realize when your dad came into your room to wish a good night and kiss your temple like he always did, pulling the blanket on you so you would be cold.
mars yap the way I disappeared on y'all hehe sorry my only classes are harder than I expected RAH....okay next chapter...okay yeah bye...it's in Jake's pov....

It was way past midnight, and you and the girls had just barely made it back to your apartment. Compared to them, you were really drunk, stumbling on the hallway on the way to the apartment as Aeri held you. You had never gotten drunk like this. Never wanted to. Never needed to. But when you happen to live in a world where the possibility of a girl you donât know cursing your boyfriend and ruining your whole relationship could be true, made you actually want to drown in alcohol and just die. Fortunately, your friends knew when it was time to go home.
âIs she dead?â
The three girls stared silently at you. You were in factânot dead, just simply lying on your bed as your weight sunk down on it. Eyes twitching, loud snoring, Yizhuo shook her head. âSheâs just sleeping.â
âSomeone kill me.â You mumbled against the pillow under you.
âNevermind.â Yizhuo added.
âI donât want to live in a world where a witch actually cursed my boyfriend into not loving me anymore.â The girls looked at each other, trying to think of what to say. âWhy canât we all just love each other in peace like normal people?â
âLike thatâs ever going to happen.â Yizhuo hit Yunjinâs arm, making her groan. âWhat? Itâs the truth.â
âY/n,â Aeri cut them off to shake you. âBabe, what can we get you?â
You mumbled something incoherent, making the girls side-eye each other.
âI kind of didnât catch that.â Yunjin muttered under her breath, earning a glare from the other two. She gave them a side-smile and turned to you, her index finger poking your cheek. âDo you need a hug? Some water?â
âI need Jake.â
Everyone froze, moving their lips yet no words came out of their mouths. The sound of your heartbeat being the only noise there was in the bedroom. You were piss drunk, the girls knew that, but they also knew that drunk wordsâŠwere sober thoughts. And they definitely knew that what you just said was a thought that you had buried in the deep end of your brain.
âWhat about, hmmâhow about we get you someone else?â Yizhuo suggested, making you sob into the pillow.
âI just miss being with Jake.â You said quietly.
Yunjinâs lips formed into a thin line as she turned around, scratching her neck. âWell, should we get him?â She asked, shrugging as if it were a casual question.
âWhat? No. How is she supposed to heal from the shit he did if heâs here?â Yizhuo whispered.
The redhead shrugged dramatically, shoulders and hands raised. âI donât know, man. Iâm just saying, didnât she take care of him that one time he called her drunk as fuck?â
âI can hear you.â
The three girls turned to you. You were sitting on the bed with your hair all over the place and a tightened smile. âIâm drunk, not deaf.â
âSorry.â They said.
All of the sudden, three single knocks were heard from the apartment door, making the girl jump into each otherâs arms. You, on the other hand, side-eyed your friends and stood up, you stumbled over a piece of clothing before glancing at them, âDonât worry, Iâll save you.â
âDude, we're going to die.â Yunjin muttered.
You hurried to the door and opened it, the thought of someone else out there waiting for you to open the door to murder you not even crossing your mind. Fortunately for you, it was only Jay, who looked more worried for your safety than you did.Â
âY/n, a-are you guys okay?â He asked, furrowed eyebrows looking at you. He gestured behind him, âSomeone saw you struggling just a few minutes ago and we couldnât help but to worry.â He explained.
You smiled, a giggle escaping your lips before you spoke. âJuuuust peachy.â
He nodded, trying to look over your shoulder. âAre the girls alright?â
âNo.â You covered your mouth, not being able to contain your laugh as you remembered they were scared. âThey thought you were a murder or something so I had to come to the rescue.â You giggled.
âYouâre drunk.â
âBarely.â
âSince when did you drink?â He wondered.
You shrugged casually, leaning against the door frame. âSince I found out a witch cursed my boyfriend so he fell out of love with me.â
Jay opened then closed his mouth, clearly confused. He kissed his teeth, âWhat?â
âWouldnât you like to know, weather boy?â You snorted, making him scratch his eyebrow.
âYeah, I would, actuallyââ
Before he could speak any more, you frowned. âWho saw me struggling? Do I have a stalker?â You gasped, making Jay huff.
âYou donât have a stalker, don't worry. UhmâJake saw you.â He responded slowly, watching your expression soften.
âJakeâs here?â
âWas. He saw you when he was leaving, said he recognized you so he asked me to check up on you guys.â He explained.
You nodded, your fingers moving to fidget with the brown belt around your waist. âI-Is he okay?â You stuttered, catching Jay by surprise. âLikeâdoes he seem okay?â
His eyes moved around yours, wondering where all this was coming from before he gave you a small nod.Â
âOkay.â You awkwardly smiled at him as you stepped back.
âY/n!â
You flinched as you looked behind your back to see the girls: Yunjin had a baseball batâmore specifically, your baseball bat, Aerie had a lamp, and Yizhuo had a vase, making Jay open his eyes widely as he raised his arms in surrender.
âI come in peace, I swear!â
By three in the morning, the girls and you had built a fort in the living room so you could all stay together. Lights were off, and the only noise in the big room was the movement you kept doing to make yourself comfy on the hard floor.
By now, you had sobered up, just a little pain in the head but nothing that wasnât going to go away by morning. Your eyes felt light in your face and were shutting second by second, but you couldnât sleep.
âI canât sleep.â
You heard ruffling just beside you, making you turn your head to your right to see Yunjin smiling at you.
âI canât sleep either.â She whispered. You silently giggled, making her do the same. âDo you want to talk about something?â She asked.
You hummed, âlike what?â
âI donât know,â you puckered your lips as you watched her think. âOh, I know!â She scooted closer to you, âthere's a music festival on the 19th, my job gave me two tickets, wanna come with me?â She smiled cheekily.
You sighed sadly, âI canât, itâs my dadâs birthday.â You frowned then smiled as an idea popped into your head, âbutâŠI might know someone who would be happy to go with you.â
âWho?â
âJay.â Yunjin furrowed her eyebrows, making you giggle. âHe loves music just like you, Iâm sure youâd have a great time.â
âWe donât even talk much. Donât you think itâd be awkward?â She asked.
You shook your head, ânot really, you guys have so much in common.â
Yunjin lied back on her back, looking at the tall ceiling. You did the same and sighed. âokay, Iâll ask him. If he has plans already, Iâm going to blame this on you.â
You giggled softly, âIâm sure he doesnât, his birthday is the day after soâŠthereâs a fat chance heâll take the day off.â You explained, âthe guys always have like a whole itinerary for each birthday, itâs cute.â
Yunjin smiled, glancing at you. You had your eyes closed, but a small smile was painted on your lips, almost as if you were reminiscing.
âMustâve been competitive when you were with Jake, huh?â She blurted out before thinking twice.
But you didnât exactly react, instead, you let out a laugh and nodded. âWell, not really, it was fun watching him stress when we would ask him which plan was better.â
Yunjin completely turned to you, a blanket covering everything but her head, âcan I ask you something personal?â She asked.
You turned to her as well and nodded.
She readjusted her pillow, exhaling. âYou said something earlier, about Jake.â You stared at her, making her sigh. âI donât want to say I believe that Nari did something to himâI donât know if itâs different for you since this was your relationship, but in my opinionâŠJake never gave any signs that he wanted to break up with you. You were so in love, and everyone used to think soâhell, thatâs the main reason why everyone thought it was so random that he called you those things. I donât really know where Iâm going with this, I just wanted to ask if you ever saw yourself actually forgiving Jake?â She breathed.
You bit your bottom lip, shrugging. âPart of me wants to believe he didnât mean those words but,â you paused. âI donât know, I just wished this never happened, to be honest.â Your eyes began to water, making Yunjin frown.
âWe donât have to talk about it.â She reached for your hand.
A tear fell down, making you wipe it quickly. âItâs fine, sorry, I justâIâve been really emotional lately for some reason.â You explained.
Yunjin nodded, âIâm probably not the person you want a hug from butâŠwe can cuddle?â You smiled as a laugh escaped you, making her smile as she opened her arms. âCome here, baby.â
You wiped your tears and scooted closer to her, âcan I be the big spoon?â You asked quietly.
Yunjin nodded, back facing you, you wrapped your arms around her, then she looked over her shoulder.
âJake was the little spoon?â
You snorted, hitting her arm as you both tried to laugh as quietly as possible not to wake the other two.

You knocked on the door. Two times, to be exact, before you grabbed the handle and twisted it, opening the door. You frowned, the silence inside the house was clearly loud. Ever since your parents first decided to separate and your dad moved out of the house, you hadnât gone to his place. It was only one time, when you and Jake helped him move a few things out of your house. But that was less than a year ago.
âDad?â
You raised your voice, looking around at the darkened room in front of you. You frowned again, puckering your lips as you put the flowers down on the table and walked inside, shutting the door behind you.
When you stepped foot into the opened bedroom just across the room, you gasped loudly. Your dad was lying on the floor, unconscious, just beside the bed. You rushed to his side, shaking him in hope heâd just wake up.
âDad, wake up.â You shook him once more before checking his pulse. When you felt a pulse, you quickly took your phone from the back pocket of your jeans and quickly called the hospital your dad had been going to do his tests.
âHi, my name is Y/n L/n. My dad is unconscious, I think he passed out before I arrived. Heâs a patient at the hospital.â The responder asked for your dadâs name which you gave as you continued shaking your dad. âHe has a pulse but I donât know how long heâs been out. Yes, lung cancer. Can you please get here quickly, please?â Your voice trembled.
Almost an hour later, you were at the hospital. They had forced you to stay out in the waiting room while they treated your dad. It was slow, it felt like you had been there for hours. And you hadnât stopped moving your legs, biting your finger nails, you couldnât stop staring at the wall in front of you like you were insane as you waited for them to call your name.
âMiss Y/n?âÂ
You looked up, the doctor smiling at you. âYou can see your father now.â You wasted no seconds as you stepped out of the chair.
When you got to the room your dad was admitted in, a wave of relief came over you when you saw him with open eyes and a steady breathing.
âDad.â
He looked over to you, and with a smile, he received you. You wrapped your arms around him and sobbed into his chest, making him laugh. âWhy are you crying?â
âI came to visit you at home and when I got there, you were unconscious and I was so scared, dad.â You pulled away, tears forming in your eyes. âYou scared me so bad.â You choked.
Your dad patted your head, smiling up at you. âIâm okay. It was just dehydration.â He explained. âItâs Valentineâs Day, why did you come here to visit me?â He snorted, making you laugh.
âNeither of us has someone to spend Valentineâs Day with so I thought we could have a father and daughter day.â You confessed shyly, making your dad smile.Â
He patted the empty space on the hospital bed, making you sit. âIâm sorry I ruined the day then, kiddo.â He apologized.
âWe can still go get ice cream?â You suggested with an innocent smile.
Your dad laughed, âI canât. They just told me I canât have any sugars or anything.â
You scrunched your nose and nodded. âOh, thatâs okay. As long as I get to spend the day with you.â You smiled, tugging the blanket that was wrapped around your dad.
âYou can spend the day with me, in the hospital.â He raised his eyebrows, âI wonât be able to leave until they run some other tests. Will be stuck here for a few hours.â He explained.
You nodded slowly, âdoes thisâdoes this happen often? Passing out?â You asked worriedly.
Your dad shook his head. âBut thereâs nothing to worry about, kiddo.â
âYou say that but,â you paused. âUnless youâre at work and you pass out there, thereâs no one that helps you at home. Youâre alone most of the time. What if I had decided not to visit today and no one got you to the hospital in time?â You rambled.
Your dad took your hand in his, taking it close to where his heart was. âMy heart is beating. Thatâs what matters now.â
You felt his heart beating and nodded slowly.Â
âNow, do you mind grabbing me some jelly from the cafeteria?â
You snorted, âI thought you werenât supposed to eat sugar.â
âItâs hospital food, Iâll be fine.â He rolled his eyes playfully. You smiled and nodded, hopping out of the hospital bed, you blew him a kiss and stepped out of the room to head to the cafeteria.
At the moment, you had been standing in front of Jayâs apartment for the last ten minutes. After your dad was discharged, you decided to take him back to your grandparentâs place. The night ended shortly, at seven at night, your father basically forced you out of the house and sent you back to yourâJayâs apartment, because he didnât want you to pity him.
You saw his car already parked. You knew the code to the apartment. But was there a possibility there might be a woman inside? The chances were there. You didnât want to risk entering the apartment and seeing Jay and a woman having dinner together. It would look wrong. Right? Not that you thought heâd be sleeping with someone on the first date, Jay didnât seem like that type of guy. But who knows? Everyoneâs full of surprises.
So after the eleventh minute, you sent him a text.
you:Â is it safe for me to enter the apartment? if not, ignore the text and continue whatever youâre doingđđđ
You rolled your eyes at your own text message. Whatever that fucking means. You stared at it for a second, wondering how long itâd take Jay to respond.
Jay:Â very safe lol
Jay:Â thought you were staying the night? Everything okay? How long until you get here?
You:Â Iâve been standing in front of the door for about 10 minutes now lol
As soon as the text message went through, the door to the apartment opened, revealing a very worried Jay.
âYouâve been standing there for ten minutes? Why didnât you punch in the code?â He asked, stepping out of the way to let you in.
âI didnât want to interrupt anything.â You furrowed your eyebrows, a very painful excuse.
Jay raised his, shutting the door behind him. âWell, I bought pizza for myself but you can have as many slices as you want.â He handed you a plate as he walked back to the living room.
You put the plate down and smiled at him, even though his back was facing you. âYeah, thanks. I think Iâll just go to bed.â You said.
Jay looked at you and tilted his head, knowing it was more than that. He patted the empty side on the floor, âCome here."
You sighed, not even in the mood to say no to the guy. You placed your tote bag on the couch and sat next to Jay, looking at him with a tired expression. A very noticeable tired expression. Eyebags, pale skin, dried lips, puffy eyes.
He knew what to ask you.
âIs your dad okay?â
You swallowed the tears, instantly nodding. âYeah.â
He nodded, attention fully on you. âWanna talk about it?â
âNot really.â You responded quietly.
You turned to look at him, making him scoot closer to you so your arms would bump. He opened his arms and with no words exchanged, he wrapped his arms around you and held you close. Instead of pushing him away, you stayed there. You didnât cry, you didnât move, you didnât have to say anything for him to understand. You simply leaned into him for support.
Jay pressed his cheek to your head, nuzzling into it for comfort.
And when you tried to lighten the mood, Jay was there to play along.
âAre you sure I didnât ruin your date?â
He snorted, his laugh vibrating through your body. âIâm sure. But Iâd rather be here, anyways.â You stayed quiet as he paused, âpizza, wine, and a girl who easily makes me laugh? What more can a man ask?âÂ
You pulled away slightly to look up at him and laughed before completely pushing him off. Jay smiled at your reaction, leaning back on the couch as he watched you stand up.
âEnjoy your solo date, Jay.â
He nodded, looking away as he grabbed a slice of pizza and stuffed it in his mouth.
âAnd thanks for the flowers!â You said, already inside the bedroom. Jay laughed, nodding to himself as he unpaused the TV.
two years ago
âI got here as fast as I could, how is he?â
You looked up from the floor, seeing Jake out of breathâflowers in hand and your favorite drink. When he saw your face, it droppedâyour eyes and lips were puffy from the crying, and you looked exhausted.
Jake sat on the empty seat next to you and took you in his arms, pushing your head to lie it on his chest. âHey, whatâs wrong?â He whispered.
You broke into a sobâbeing vulnerable was so easy when you were with Jake. He let you be you with no judgement.
With one hand, he held your face up so you could look at him. He frowned, âHey, tell me whatâs wrong. Iâm here.â He reassured, holding you closer with the other hand.
âH-he has cancer.â You choked.
Jakeâs face dropped. He didnât even say anything as he hugged you even closer, âheâs going to get through this, heâs strong.â He said, making you sob harder on his chest. he rubbed your back and caressed head, fingers running through your hair.
Jake was always good with words, at comforting, it was something he got from you, yet he became better at it as time went by. He made you feel like everything was going to be okay, and you always believed it, because you trusted Jake.
âHere.â He pulled back his hand from your head to grab your favorite drink and hand it to you. You let go of his hold and simply grabbed the drink, saying nothing as you opened it and took a sip. âIs it good?â He asked, eyes focusing only in yours.
You gave him a tightened smile and nodded, making him smile. His hand that was in your back fell to your knee, rubbing it subconsciously.
When you went to close the drink, he took it from you and closed it for you, putting it to the side next to the flowers. Your eyes flickered to them before you turned to Jake.
âWhatâre the flowers for?â
He shrugged, giving you a shy smile. âTheyâre for your dad. I thought itâd be a nice gesture. He likes flowers, doesn't he?â
You smiled at him, a small laugh escaping you as you grabbed his hand for comfort, to which Jake smiled as well, putting your hand in between his two hands, keeping it warm. âYour dadâs going to be okay, Y/n. Heâll pull through this.âÂ
You nodded, puckering your lips as you looked away, eyes watering. His eyes followed yours as you looked around the room, making him frown.
âYou can talk to me.â
You held your breath as a tear fell from your eye. Jake moved one of his hands to hold your face, wiping the tear away.
âH-he was coughing up blood.â You stuttered, âand heâhe couldnât breathe and I didnât know what to do.â You explained, looking at Jake as you shook your head. He kept his hand on your cheek, stopping you from moving too much. âHe couldâve died.â
âDonât say that.â He cut you off, âheâs better now, right? Heâs here now, the doctors will do everything to help him. You donât have to worry.â He reassured you. âYou know your dad, heâll get through this. Okay?â
You nodded, letting your head fall to his shoulder. He moved his hand back to your upper back and moved it up and down as he held you close.
âThanks for being here, Jake.â You sobbed on his shoulder, wrapping your arms around his waist for comfort.
Jake smiled, even though you couldnât see it.
âOf course, baby. I will always be here for you. Always.â

You sang as you shut the door behind you, taking your shoes off on the entry. The scent of spices and whatever Jay was doing entered your nostrils right away, making you gasp and run to the kitchen. âYou started?!â
Jay glanced over his shoulder and chuckled. âMaybeâŠâ You groaned, âHey, you get in a hangry mood all the time. I was not risking it.â
You couldnât help but smile, hitting his shoulder. âFair. It looks really nice.â
You commented, looking over his shoulder. He tensed upâand without you noticing, he snuck a glance at you, eyes flickering down to your lips. He shook his head, a small laugh leaving his lips as he raised the spoon he was mixing the sauce with.
âWanna try?â
âLet me wash my hands first, chef.âÂ
He smiled at the nickname, watching you rinse your hands before standing next to him. Jay let a spoon of the sauce fall on the back of your hand, then grabbing it to guide it to your mouth. When you tasted it, your eyes widened. âI-Is it good?â He asked, suddenly feeling anxious when your eyebrows expressed the exact opposite of what he wanted to see.
âThis might be the best pasta sauce Iâve ever tried.â
Jay sighed in big relief, holding his heart as he continued mixing the sauce.
âIâm going to go change, yeah?â He nodded, âYouâre the best!â
He smiled subconsciously, covering the pan before grabbing the two glasses, taking them to the table with the wine in his other hand.
Ten minutes later, you two were sitting across from each other, an empty plate of creamy spicy pesto pasta alla vodka and a glass of wine staring right back at you. Jay had yet to show you his cooking skills, even though you already knew he was good in the kitchen. It was hilarious watching him do his own stuff, it was as if you were watching master chef and he was running out of time, only in Jayâs mind, there was no rush at allâin fact, with you there, it was as if time had stopped moving and he had all the time in the world.
âSeriously, easily the best pasta in the world.â
âReally? I mightâve gone overboard with the spice.â He scrunched his nose, taking a small sip from the wine.
With no reaction at all, you shrugged. âItâs perfect for me.â
âThatâs because you love spice.â He said as he cleaned his tongue, trying to get the spice to go away.
âOr maybe you just canât handle it.â You wiggled your eyebrows, âYouâre the type of person that thinks ketchup is spicy.â
âSome of them are!â He laughed out loud.
You followed along, laughing at the way he was reacting. You took a sip of your wine, it wasnât a strong one, but the taste lingered on your tongue and down your throat.Â
âYouâre so dramatic.â You teased, watching him stand up to go grab a glass of milk. You carefully gathered the finished platesâexcept for the bottle of wine and glasses, and took them to the dishwasher whilst he chugged on the glass of milk.
âI am not dramatic.â
You quietly walked out of the bedroom, even though Riki was dead asleep. The moment you stepped out of the bedroom, you bumped into Jay, causing him to grab your arms to balance you and not let you fall.
You breathed out a laugh as he let go of you, âThanks.â
He smiled, walking down the hallway with you. âI really thought you both would be asleep by now.â
You looked at him as you entered the kitchen, âWine might make me a little bit dizzy, but itâs always so hard for me to sleep. Especially with Rikiâs loud snores. Seriously, why does he snore so loud?â Jay laughs quietly, putting the kettle on the stove.
âShouldâve left him asleep on the couch.â He kissed his teeth.
You shook your head, âItâs fine, he talks in his sleep so I really want to know what he says tonight.â
He snorted, âHow many sleepovers have you had that you know he sleep-talks?â
âToo many. I used to baby sit him and his sisters back in high school, one time he and his little sister fell asleep on the couch when we were watching a movie and Konon, his older sister, and I watched them have a conversation while being asleep.â Jayâs attention was fully on you, a smile on his face as you spoke. âIt was hilarious.â You shrugged.
He laughed, pouring some of the hot water on two cups. He grabbed two bags, placed them inside the cup as well then passed one to you. âSugar cube?â He asked, making you nod with a small smile.
âThank you.â
He smiled, âItâs nothing.â
He stood behind the counter whilst you sat on the kitchen stool, and with a smile. âCan you believe Iâm moving into my own apartment in less than two weeks?â You couldnât help but smile.
âI canât, actually.â You bit your bottom lip as you watched Jay place the sugar cube inside his tea. âItâs been so much fun having you here.â He looked at you, making you give him a nervous smile.
âAnd here I thought youâd be happy you could finally get rid of me.â You joked.
He shook his head, âNo, never.â He said firmly.
You blew on your tea before sipping it, careful not to burn yourself. Jay watched you, feeling a little bit anxious all the sudden.
âNext weekâs Valentineâs day.â He blurted out, making you put down your cup and nod. âYou have any plans?â
You snorted and shook your head, âNope. Not at all, I think Iâll just go home and hang out with my dad.â You tapped your finger on the cup.
âOhâŠâ Jay said, licking his lips. âUh, Iâve been meaning to ask, howâs your dad doing?â
Jay had found out about your dadâs cancer a few months ago, the day he and Riki went to your dorm after you spoke to Jake and had the argument with your parents. It was a slip up, but it made Jay want to be there for you ever since then. You hadnât even realized you had told them about it, Riki knew already so it didnât even cross your mind that Jay didnât. So him now asking you about your dad didnât make you feel awkward. It made you feel comfortable.
âHeâs been going to the hospital a lot.â You answered with a little hesitation.Â
Jay nodded slowly, trying not to push any more buttons you didnât want to push yourself. âWe donât have to talk about it.â
You smiled at him sadly, âThanks.â
âSo,â He changed the subject, making you look at him, a playful smile appearing on his face. âHuh Yunjin as your roommateâŠâ
You snorted, the smile re-appearing on your face. âI think itâs going to be fun. I canât wait for her to give me snippets of her songs.â
âYouâll probably schedule a gossip hour too, huh?â He joked.
Your eyes widened as you nodded. âWe literally did!â
Jay couldnât help but to feel that smile of yours all the way to his heart. He couldnât help it, seeing you happy made him so. damn. happy.Â

Christmas at your house was quieter this year, with more tension. Your siblings had left the house just before dinner, leaving you to sit alone at the table with your parentsâthe same parents that had been in the process of getting divorced for the past year.
It was already awkward. You had been poking your food for the past ten minutes, trying to ignore the way your parents were arguing over where you were supposed to spend Christmas this year. Your dad said you were supposed to be at his parentâs house. Your mom said the opposite. Of course, your dad was right, but you didnât want your mom to explode in front of you for disagreeing.
It would be different with Jake here.
He would be sitting next to you, his hand touching your thigh in a supportive way, to let you know he was there for you. He would be starting the conversation to end the awkward tension between your parents. He knew exactly what to say to bring the mood up. You didnât even have to open your mouth at the time, you could just eat and let Jake help you through dinner.
But that was last year. This year was different.
This year there was more tension. Your father's lung cancer had worsened this summer, making it even worse than last year. He had done tests while you were still in New York, your mother kept it from you, but your siblings didn't. And of course, the day after you were back in Seoul, at the hospital where your father was brokenly lying on. Last year, the news broke you. Jake stayed with you, let you be vulnerable.
This year, there was no shoulder you could cry on.
âCan you guys stop arguing for a minute?â You gave them a tightened smile when they both turned to you. âItâs Christmas. The least you can do for me is not argue.â You asked, voice cracking.
What bothered you the most about them was the fact that the one in the wrong was your mother, not your dad. Itâs usually the other way around, the husband cheating on the wife with the assistant, the most common way to end a marriage. But with your parents, your mother had the nerve to have an affair with a married man, she cheated on your sick father who has done nothing but be a supportive partner, a father.
Before thinking twice about it, you placed your fork down and looked at the seat across you, where your mother sat. âActually, Iâll just take this to my bedroom.â You said quietly but in a harsh tone that was never meant to be used with her.
Your mother snapped her head at you as you grabbed your plate and started standing up. âThereâs no eating inside your bedrooms.â She demanded.
âAnd thereâs no arguing when weâre eating. We all break rules, donât we?â You shrugged as you walked past your dad, placing a small box in front of him, âmerry Christmas, dad. Love you.â
Without another word, you took off. You made your way to the kitchen, grabbed a full plate of food that was on the kitchen island, some sour jellies, chocolate, a bunch of other stuff to fill in the sadness inside you, then made your way upstairs.
When you locked yourself inside your bedroom, you heard footsteps coming from downstairs, signaling that your dad was leaving already. You understood. He was only here because of you, so why would he stay if you werenât present? You placed the plates of food on your nightstand, making your way to where the window was to peek just a little bit. There was your dadâs car driving off from the house. It didnât make sense, your dad built this house for him and your mother, yet, he let her keep it. Because he was the kindest person ever.
You changed into your pajamas, black sweatpants and over-sized shirt with a hoodie on top, grabbed the âHome Aloneâ DVD and inserted it on the disc below your TV before hopping on your bed, drowning yourself in the warm blankets before playing it.
Home Alone. That was the movie you and Jake used to watch every Christmas, one of the many traditions you had. Another thing that changed this year.
Four Christmas' ago
âHoney! Jaeyun is here!â
Your eyes widened with excitement as you got out of bed and rushed downstairs. You were wearing your grinch pajamas, hair all over the place and some chocolate on the corner of your mouth. You didnât even bother changing, because Jake was someone you trusted to see that messy part of you.
You grabbed the small bag from under the Christmas tree that said âJakeâ on it, and ran to the door. There was Jake, standing with a huge smile on his face. Without a word, the two of you wrapped your arms around each other, making your mother roll your eyes with a lingering smile on her face as she walked back to the living room where the rest of your family sat.
âYou smell like Christmas.â Jake nuzzled his nose on your hair, making you push him off with a giggle.
âAnd you smell like expensive cologne.â
He sniffed his own clothes and smiled awkwardly. âMy uncle gave me a cologne for Christmas.â He shook his head, opening his jacket to reveal a small wrapped box. âDo you think we could walk for a little bit?â
You nodded, looking back at your parents who gave you thumbs up. You grabbed your hung coat from the entry and stepped outside, slipping your shoes on.
You and Jake walked for a minute, before he stopped in front of you and handed you the box.
âThis is for you. Itâs not much but it reminded me of you. Merry Christmas.â He said your name in a way you never heard.
You smiled shyly, grabbing the box. âCan I open it now?â He nodded, looking nervous.
A small gasp escaped your lips as you opened the box, revealing a beautiful necklace with a shiny sun on it. You looked at Jake and immediately hugged him to which he froze on the spot, not reacting fast. You pulled away from the hug, a small shy chuckle coming out of your lips as you looked down at the gift.
âI-I know itâs not muchââ
ââitâs perfect. Thank you, Jake.âÂ
He nodded, a sigh of relief escaping him. âThe reason I-I chose this necklace was because you light up every room you walk into. You being present is enough to make me smileâI guess itâs not that significant for you but I just thought because it reminded me of you, Iâd get it.â He rambled through his words, making you smile.
âItâs the best gift someone has ever given me.â You confessed, âNow I feel embarrassed about my gift.â
You looked down, kicking your feet. Jakeâs eyes widened in surprise, âyou got me something?â He asked.
You nodded, handing him the bag with a side smile. He quickly opened it with a smile, a gasp escaping him when he saw the several sour jellies, a bracelet you made, and a Lego box inside it.
âY/n, youâre amazing! This gift is everything!â
He threw himself on you, placing delicate touches with his lips all over your head before lifting your head up, his lips reaching for your cheeks. You froze and looked at him, making him freeze as well.
âI-Iâm so sorry.â He mumbled.
You stared at him, your eyes then flickering down to his mouth for a quick second. When he noticed that, he did the same. âI wanted to do this more formally but, c-can I be your boyfriend?â He asked.
Your lips parted open, a breath of relief escaping them. âThatâs so random.â
Jake tilted his head to the side, âIâm not sure how to take that.â His lips moved, an inch close to your lips.
âItâs a yes. You can also kiss me, Jake.â
âThank God.â
Jake closed the space between your lips, slowly and with no intent of leaving, moving his lips in synchronization with yours. He smiled into the kiss, making you pull away, giggling when you saw Jakeâs reddened ears.
âAre you blushing?â
He shook his head. âMaybe. Canât a boy blush because of his girlfriend?â
You chuckled, eyes squinted as your smile took over your face.
âLet me put the necklace on you, you silly goose.â
âYou did not just call me that!â
You wore that necklace for the next three years. Hell, you even had it on your neck when you left for New York. Not an exact way of healing, but it helped you. That necklace was now buried in the nightstand beside you, you couldnât throw it away, you didnât want to.
You hadnât even realized you werenât paying attention to the movie anymore. The clock had struck twelve, it was midnight. It was Christmas. And you were alone. Just you and Kevin McCallister against the world.
But of course, someone had other plans.
The sound of a rock hitting your window made you snap out of your thoughts, pause the movie, and jump out of bed. You opened the curtains of the window, then quietly opened the window itself to see the same boy you had been thinking about just a second ago.
âJake?â
The boy froze, a small rock on his right hand, already in the air to throw right where the girl stood. He quickly put it down, wiped his hand on his pants and waved awkwardly.
You looked behind you, even with the door locked, you couldnât help but to worry your mother would spawn out of nowhere.
When you looked back down to Jake, you noticed his shaky breath all the way from up your room, showing how nervous he was.
âC-can we walk,â he paused. âFor a little bit?â
You didnât know what you were doing, but whatever this was, was way better than having to lock yourself in the bedroom so your mother wouldnât bother you. So you closed your window with no response, grabbed some jellies, unlocked the door and made your way downstairs.
âHoneyââ
ââIâm going to go on a walk.â
You grabbed your coat and shut the door behind you.
From the porch, you could see Jake walking away which made you frown as you made your way to him. âYouâre leaving already?â
He gasped and held his heart, making you let out a small laugh. âShit. Sorry, I thought you shutting the window meant ânoâ so I just saw myself out. I didnât think youâd actually come.â He explained.
âAnythingâs better than being inside that house right now.â You shrugged, starting to walk by yourself.
Jake followed your footsteps, hands in his pockets as he exhaled into the cold air. Instead of saying something, he walked quietly, the only noise being your footsteps on the snow beneath you.
âI bumped into your dad earlier, actually.â He spoke after a few minutes of walking in silence.
You glanced at him. âYou did?â
He nodded.
âBut he left like an hour ago.â You tilted your head in confusion, âdid you plan on being here earlier?â
He chuckled and nodded, fidgeting with his own fingers inside his pockets. âYeah. I-uhm, I thought you wouldnât want to see me so, I walked back to my house and thatâs when I saw him. Is he...okay?â He asked.
You gave him a tight eyed smile. âBetter than last year." A lie. "Has been doing a lot of tests.â A truth. You nodded to yourself, making Jake copy you.
At least a part of what you said was true.
You kicked your feet on the snow as you continued walking, Jake kept his footsteps steady yet too strict. He gulped, kissed his teeth a few times, gaining the courage to speak up.
âCan weâcan we sit here?âÂ
He gestured to the bench just a few feet away from you, then scratched the back of his neck when you nodded. When you sat on the bench, you looked ahead at the frozen river.
The both of you watched the frozen river for a few minutes. It took everything in you not to speak up, and it was taking everything in Jake to speak up. But he wanted to do things right, he didnât want to mess up and saw the wrong things when he knew what he wanted to say. So you patiently waited, something you learned about Jake is that it took him time to find the words to speak, it was a cute thing you found out about him, it was something you helped him with during your relationship.
âHere.â
He placed a box and a letter in the empty space between you. Your eyes flickered from the objects beside you to Jake, âwhatâs this?â You asked.
âYou donât have to keep it, I just want you to see it.â When you went to reach for it, he stopped you, letting his hand linger on top of yours. âOpen it when youâre home.â
You nodded slowly, taking your hand back.
Jake gulped nervously, ât-this is just a small something. This isnât how I want to apologize.â He added, his voice trembling.
âOkay.â
The tone in which you said it, was the way used to tell him to make him know you were being patient, no rush.
âI was a complete asshole. The things I said to you, how I treated you that day.â He paused, watching as you looked away from him. âI know that I donât deserve you. Forgiving me wouldnât fix things. I put myself in your place andâfuck, I wouldnât forgive myself either. But Iâm not you, and I really want to make things right so one dayâif not today, you can forgive me. I want to become a better version of myself, for me, and most importantly,â he paused when you turned to him. âI want to become a better person for you.â
Your lips trembled just a little, showing emotion to his words. But you kept your head high, still not looking at him. But Jake saw right through you, and you hated that.
âI canât change what I did back then. I wish on every star I could go back and treat you the way you should have been treated but I canât. I know those words I said to you will scare you for life, and I will blame myself for that for the rest of my life.â He stopped talking to take a breather, and you couldn't help but to look at him for a second.
He looked miserable, destroyed, vulnerable. And worst of all, he was this way on your anniversaryâor at least the day it wouldâve been your fourth anniversary.
âI-I donât even know why I called you those names. Why I even believed her in the first place. I canât remember any of it, it was like a blur. One day you and I were happy and then the next day, we broke up.â His voice cracked.
You let out a small chuckle, definitely not the right time for it. âMaybe Nari did voodoo shit on you.â You joked.
Jake smiled at your joke, shaking his head in disappointment. âIf that were the case, this wouldnât be so difficult.â He admitted.
You watched him okay with the letter he had given you, making you sigh. âForgiveness takes time, Jake. It doesnât mean Iâll hate you forever.â You said in a whisper. âNot that I hate you now.â
He looked up at you and gave you a tightened smile, âyou should.â
You shrugged. âYouâre trying, thatâs what matters.â
His mouth twitched into a pout as he nodded.
âI heard you and Jay are friends again. Thatâs a start.â You spoke after a second, âand I heard youâre trying to be a better person, fix your mistakes. Thatâs another step.â You gave him a saddened but supportive smile.
He chuckled, a tear falling on your letter. âIâm so sorry I hurt you, Y/n. I really am. I hurt you and youâre still here.â
âItâs tradition.â
He smiled down at your letter and nodded. âThereâs some stuff in this letter that I canât say out loud for some reason.â He gestured to it, making you look down at it. âWhen I try to speak about it, itâs like my words get swallowed. So I just thoughtâmaybe writing it down would be easier.â He handed you the letter, making you nod as you hid it inside your coat. âAlso figured youâd probably prefer being alone when you read it, instead of here. Just donât read it now. You'll know when.â He fumbled his words.
âAre you sick?â
Jake looked up, shaking his head almost too quickly, letting a small cough, âW-what? No, just keep it close until then. Please. Itâs all I ask from you.â
You nodded, confused, but not pushing any more buttons. He copied your movements, nodding his head.
âThanks.â
You grabbed the sour jellies from the other side of your inside coat and handed them to Jake, making him look up with a surprised look.
âI brought a little something too. Couldnât break the tradition.â You smiled.
He stared at you for a second before nodding, a sad chuckle leaving his lips as he inhaled and exhaled out loud. He grabbed the jellies from your hand, your hand brushing his for a small second, to which he reacted.
âThanks. For being here.â He paused and gave you a smile that did something to your heart, âIt means a lot.â
For some reason, you leaned closer to him, placed a touching and lingering kiss on the boyâs cheek before pulling away.
âMerry Christmas, Jake.âÂ
You whispered as you stood up with the box in your hands, walking away and not looking back.
The second you shut the door to your room, you stared at the letter in your hand, he wanted you to keep it closedâfor some reason, and you listened to him, but that made you think what was written in there, was much more than just an apology. It made your heart ache, but put the letter in the bottom drawer to your desk and sighed, making your way to your bed with the box. Youâll know when.
Whatever that means.
You looked at the box for a second, as if you were waiting for it to magically open itself. When it didnât, you sat down and carefully opened the box. It was a beautiful teal-blue box with a pink ribbon on it, two of your favorite colors. When you took the top off, a thick letter stared right at you, a written letter, with the same awful handwriting you always had trouble reading. You chuckled at it, putting it to the side with a soft smile on your face as your eyes found themselves flickering to said letter. You grabbed the smaller box inside the box, opened it, revealing a bracelet. A handmade bracelet. You realized quickly that it was an attempt of recreating the bracelet you had given him just four years ago, it made you laugh. A poor attempt, but an attempt nonetheless.
How did he even remember about the bracelet? Did he still wear it? Did he have it on him all the time and you just didnât know?
You raised your wrist up, just enough so you could put the bracelet on then smiled. âHeâs so bad at making these things.â
But you still kept it on your wrist as you grabbed the letter that was inside the box and opened it.
Dear Y/n,
Donât laugh!! I know the bracelet is ugly. Can I get points for trying, though? Sorry, I know itâs not the time to make jokes. I canât help it, you always used to laugh when you tried teaching me how to make friendship bracelets and I ended up messing everything up. I remember a little bit though.
Anyway, I just wanted to give you that bracelet as a Christmas gift. When you open this, itâll be Christmas already so, and also something else, consider it a Christmas gift and a happy-what couldâve been our fourth year together-anniversary gift. Iâm deeply sorry for everything, for ruining us.
You're probably tired of me apologizing and for that I appreciate you so much, because even after all what happened, youâre still you. Me, on the other hand, would be questionable. Iâve been trying to think of what to say for the past weeks and I canât think of anything, I really hurt you, and now I realize thereâs no way to take what I said back. Nothing. Whatâs done is done and thatâs it. What I can do is do better in the futureâactually, starting today would be better.
I have been writing this letter for about two weeks now, I knowâŠIâm a man of many words (sarcasm). After writing the last part, I decided to go to a therapist. Iâve been seeing her for about a week now? Hopefully I can get the help that I need, because it turns out itâs not just you who thinks Iâve changed. My parents and my brother basically begged me to see someone, which is understandable. I was acting like a prick to them like I was with you.
I donât want to take much of your time so Iâll stop right here. I just wanted to tell you that I am really trying here, for you, and for myself. I hope one day you can see this effort, you donât have to forgive me just yet, Iâll do everything to make me deserve forgiveness. Because to me, what matters is you.
I love you,
Your Silly Goose.
You snorted at the nickname at the end, putting the letter to the side and burying your face on the pillow.
There was only one person that could ever make you cry, out of happiness, frustration, sadness, anger. Unfortunately, that person was now your ex-boyfriend, who had now made you cry out of every emotion there was on planet earth.
Because he was the only person that ever made you feel.

Halloween was probably your boyfriendâs favorite time of the year. He took costumes very seriously.
âOh gosh, who are you two supposed to be?â
You and your boyfriend glanced at each other; you were dressed as little red riding hood whilst Jake was dressed as a grandma-disguised wolf.Â
âIs it..not obvious?â You chuckled awkwardly, looking at Jake who had growled at Jay.
âAh, I get it now. You look terrible.â He told Jake.
âYouâre just jealous because Iâm the hottest in here.â He flipped his non-existent long hair, making you giggle. Jake glanced at you with a wide smile, giving you a quick peck on your left cheek. âWeâre so winning best costume.âÂ
âIf we donâtââ you started.
ââitâs rigged.â You and Jake said simultaneously.
Jay blinked at the both of you, nodding along. âYeah, youâre so going to win the best sexy costume.â He snorted a laugh.
âSeriously, man.â Jake slid his hands all over his covered body, letting a small âkachowâ sound as he slapped his own butt. âThis is so sexy.â
âIt so is.â You played along, earning a smile from the boy. When he looked away, you turned to Jay and shook your head, mouthing âitâs notâ, earning a laugh from him.
âYou look good.â He complimented you.
You smiled at him, âyou too. Robin Hood?â
He nodded.
âI heard Heeseung was dressing up as Captain Hook.â You told the guys, making them nod. Jake snuck an arm around your waist and under your cape, smiling down at you.
âWe should get something to drink.â He whispered down to your ear, making you nod but turn to Jay.
âAre you here with anyone else?â
He shook his head. âYou and the other guys.â
âLetâs go for a drink then.â You smiled kindly. He nodded, tagging along behind you and Jake.
You rarely went to parties. It wasnât your scene, never was. When you became friends with Donghyuck and Shotaro, that changed in the smallest bit. You and Yizhou had become part of the frat in a way, always involved in planning parties, forming opinions on stuff like, âdo you guys think this theme will workâ and others, so you were always invited to said frat events. Jake was never jealous or suspicious of anything, in fact, he was very excited to see that his girlfriend was getting invited to events like this, so he could attend as well.
So to say he was excited, was an understatement.
âHow many cups did you drink, dude?âÂ
Asked Yizhou when she saw your boyfriend bump into the wall. You grabbed him with a groan as his heavy weight shifted on you.
âToo many.â You mumbled as you signaled her to help you.
âDid you even drink?â You shook your head, âso heâs a party pooper.â
âHeâs not a party pooper, Yi. He simply had too much fun. I think Hyuck gave him his deathly drink or something.â You muttered.
âExcuse me? Itâs Hyuck's drink, not deathly drink, get it right.â Donghyuck said, stepping outside with you and Yizhou, Jay by his side. âMeet Jay, by the way. Heâs cool as fuck.â He grinned drunkenly.
âWe already know Jay.â You and Yizhou said at the same time.
Donghyuck frowned, glancing at Jay who quickly stepped into the scene to help you two. âHere, I can take him.â
âThanks.â You both said.
As Jay wrapped Jakeâs arm around his shoulder and placed his own on his waist, he turned to you. âIâll take him to our apartment. Do you girls need a ride?â
âYes, please.â Three voices said.
You all turned to Donghyuck who suddenly fell onto you, causing you to stumble into Jay. âOkay, letâs go, you.â You grabbed him by the arm.
âOuch!â
The ride back to the dorms wasnât awkward at all. Yizhou, Jake, and Donghyuck had fallen asleep or at least thatâs what it seemed like whilst you were in the front seat chatting with Jay.
âMy moneyâs on Verstappen.â
âThatâs so unfair!â You scoffed with a laugh, making the guy smile. âHe always wins.â
âI know my guys, Y/nnie.â You frowned, âAnd Iâm playing it safe, last time I lost like a hundred bucks for betting on Perez.â
âWow, out of all drivers?â
He glared at you, making you giggle.
âYou guys are so loud.â Jake mumbled from the seat behind you.
âShh, sweetie, go to sleep.â You whispered, glancing back at him. The Australian boy mumbled something incoherent under his breath, making you and Jay chuckle.
After a few minutes, Jay pulled over to his and Jakeâs shared apartment, taking Yizhou in his arms respectfully while basically dragging Donghyuck by the shirt. You, on the other hand, had Jake with one arm around his waist whilst he was hugging you tightly, basically making you incapable of moving.
âDude, you need to move.â You shifted into laughter as he mumbled incoherent things into your neck.
âNeed any help?â Asked Jay, already inside the building.
You shook your head, poking Jake on the side of his waist to wake him up, making him giggle drunkenly. You smiled at his state, he was a lot more shy when he was drunk, more touchy and more in love.
âYouâre so cute.â Jake complimented you quietly as he hugged his pillow whilst watching you take his shoes to his closet.
After a very complicated ten minutes, you and Jay had managed to get everyone into the apartment. Jay had suggested for you to stay over, you could sleep in Jakeâs bed since you two were together, Yizhou could take Jayâs bed, and Donghyuck and him could sleep in the living room. You had of course accepted, you had slept over countless times at their apartment. Hell, you even had a pair of pajamas in Jakeâs drawers just in case. But today, you lend them to Yizhou whilst you wore one of Jakeâs very oversized t-shirts (which is technically yours) so your best friend could sleep comfortably.
âIâm going for some Advil. Donât fall asleep yet.â You pointed at him.
He nodded, giving you that sweet smile of his that made you want to crawl on him and squeeze his cheeks like a little baby.
âOh, hey.â Jay smiled awkwardly when you entered the kitchen.
You waved at him, already too tired. âDo you have Advil?â He nodded, opening a drawer to hand you the whole container. âThanks. Did Yizhou fall asleep?â He nodded again, stirring the bag of tea in a cup.
âYeah, her and Donghyuck are dead asleep in my bed.â You snorted a laugh.
âI am so sorry about that.â You covered your face in embarrassment.
Jay shook his head with a soft chuckle, âItâs fine. As long as theyâre comfortable, Iâm okay. The couchâs comfortable anyways.â
You chuckled, looking down for a second before pointing at the container in your hand. âIâm going to goâŠyou know,â
He smiled with a nod.
âOkay.â You nodded, walking back to your boyfriendâs bedroom.
When you heard his snoring, you smiled to yourself, planting your hand on his shoulder to shake him. âJake. Jakeyyy.â He hummed at the nickname, making you giggle. âTake this and then you can sleep.â
Jake threw his hand back almost instantly, squeezing his own hand. You grabbed the back of his hand and placed the Advil in his hand, guiding it to his mouth. He opened his mouth and threw the pill inside, making you smile. âWater.â
He nodded with a pout.
With closed eyes, he took the water from you with a small âthank youâ escaping his lips. When he swallowed the pill, he hugged his pillow.
âYouâre the best, Y/nnie. I love you.â He said under his breath.
Your heart ached at his words, making you lean closer to kiss the corner of his mouth. You smiled at it, âI love you, Jaeyun.â
He smiled subconsciously at your words, completely missing out how you walked out of the bedroom.
On the way out, you quickly stepped into Jayâs room where your friends were basically spread out, lying all over the bed. You snorted, taking your phone out to snap a picture before putting one Advil for each on each side of the bed before stepping out of the bedroom to head back to the kitchen.
âTired yet?â Jay asked when he saw your shadow come into first.
You chuckled, shaking your head a tad bit.
âHere.âÂ
He slid a cup of tea your way. You smiled at him, âThanks. Exactly what I needed.â
âI guess I just know you well.â You chuckled. âJake okay?â
You nodded. âSleeping like a baby.â
Both of you sipped your tea, a smile creeping on your lips as a thought appeared in your brain. Jay noticed you almost immediately, your smile infecting him. âWhat?â
âNothing.â You giggled, shaking your head. âI feel like an old lady drinking tea this late.â
He put his cup down, crossing his arms around his upper waist. âGuess weâre already mentally old.â
He joked, making you laugh. âHey! Weâre twenty, thatâs likeânot old at all.â
With your free hand, you playfully slapped his arm, making him dramatically fall back on to the counter.
âYou have wounded me, L/n Y/n.â He grunted, holding his heart, eyes shut.
You fell back, laughter filling the room. âYouâre so dramatic, oh my God.â
Jay opened one eye, looking at you with offense. âI am everything but, lady.â He scoffed dramatically.
You smiled at him, covering your mouth to stop yourself from laughing at the sudden accent he had done. At your reaction, Jay couldnât help but laugh as well, taking his tea and turning around to not look at you.
For a few minutes, you and Jay shared a few laughs, jokes, and talked about basically everything. To the point you had fallen asleep on the couch beside him, but of course, like the good friend he wasâto you, he carried you back to Jakeâs bed, knowing youâd want to wake up next to him, and probably be more comfortable in a bed rather than in a couch.
For a secondâa second he considered more than enough, Jay looked at you. You lied next to Jake, wrapped in his sheets, looking peaceful as ever. And Jay could never be this happier.
âI told you, I didnât need a gift.â
Jake said, still, his smile said exactly the opposite. You knew him too well, obviously he didnât need a gift, but he was always good at receiving.
Your favorite time of the year was Jakeâs birthday. November fifteenth. At least since you two started going out. Where he was good at receiving, you were good at giving. You loved making gifts, for your friends, family, boyfriend. He was one of your favorite people in the world, so of course you went all out with his gift.
âYou are enough.â Jake teased, putting the box to the side to grab your waist and pull you closer, placing soft and short kisses all over your face.
You giggled, trying to push him away. âMove, I have makeup on, you idiot.â He shushed you by placing his lips on yours, swallowing your giggles.
He hummed in your lips, making you smile at the kiss before you pulled away, your arms now wrapped around his shoulders, caressing the back of his neck softly. âSo you donât want to see your gift?â You tilted your head playfully, already knowing the answer.
âWell, of course I do!â He smiled widely, his hands unwrapping themselves from your waist to grab the gift sitting beside you. âIs it a puppy? You know I canât betray Layla like that.â He said, unwrapping the box as he sat down on the couch.
âYeah, because I would put a puppy in a box, Jake.â
He shrugged casually, handing you the wrapping paper as he struggled to open the box. âIâve seen videos about it.â He mumbled under his breath, making you laugh.
âDonât get your expectations too high.â You said, a little shy now that he was opening the box. âBe careful with the box.â
Jake glanced at you and chuckled at your expression. âYouâre so cute when youâre nervous, baby.â He pinched your right cheek, making you scrunch your nose.
âJust open it.â
Jake giggled, finally opening the box and peeking inside like a bird. His eyes widened, turning to you with a big smile. âYouâre amazing!â He tackled you in a hug, making you groan as you both laid back on the couch. âYou know I love jellies!â He started planting little kisses all over your face, making you laugh.
âYouâre this excited for jellies? Jake, thatâs not even the actual gift.â You giggled, your cheeks heating up from his touch. Jake pulled away and frowned.
âItâs not?â
âA part of it, yeah. But the actual gift is something else.â He glanced back down at your lips, then to your eyes, and smiled.
He pulled away from you as quickly as possible, grabbing the wrapped box inside the box with a huge smile. He slightly shook it, making your smile drop. âIs it a Lego?â He giggled.
âYou always ruin it!â You groaned, hitting his shoulder.
Jake laughed, taking off the wrapping paper. He gasped, turning to you with widened eyes. âNo way! Jack Sparrowâs ship!?â He exclaimed, raising the Lego box so you could also see it.
At his reaction, your smile reappeared. Jake turned the Lego box around and smiled at you. âI really wanted this one. Youâre like a genie, how did you know?â He smiled, mixing his words up. âSeriously, youâre the best girlfriend ever!â He threw the box on the couch and tackled you again.
âItâs just a Lego, but Iâm glad you like it.â
You giggled as he pressed his lips on your lips, then your chin, trailing his lips softly around your face. âLike it? Itâs my favorite movie, I love it. But I love you more.â He pressed his lips on yours. You held the back of his neck, holding him close to you as you smiled into the kiss. Jake couldnât help but do the same. âThank you, beautiful.â
âThereâs a few other things in the box, but theyâre small.â You mumbled against his lips.
Jake dramatically fell on top of you, making you gasp for air as a laugh escaped you.Â
âYouâre heavy.â
He let his lips touch your collarbone, pressing little kisses. âAm not.â He mumbled, sneaking his arms around your waist to switch positions. Now, you were lying on him, legs on each side of his waist. With a smile, Jake tucked a piece of your hair behind your ear. âYouâre beautiful.â
âYou are.â You complimented back, poking his beautiful nose, that action and that shy smile of yours winning Jake over as he closed his eyes and laughed. âWhat?â You laughed at his random reaction.
He moved his hands down to your waist, holding you close to him. âYouâre the best gift Iâve ever received.â You chuckled, making him tilt his head upwards to chase your lips. âReally. Youâre my greatest gift.â He mumbled against your lips.
âShut up.â You smiled, pulling away to grab the box. âYou can open the rest later.â
He frowned, âwhy not now?â
âBecause I wrote some letters and Iâm going to be embarrassed if you read them out loud.â You played with the hem of his shirt.
âYou wrote me letters? Plural?â You nodded, making him take his hand off you to touch his heart. âMy heart. Stop being so perfect or I might die.â He cried.
You laughed, getting off of him and taking the box with you. âNever mind. Youâre not getting these letters ever.â
Jake gasped, quickly sitting up to grab you and pull you on his lap. âI need to read them or Iâll die.â His lips brushed the skin under the shell of your ear.
You shift your head to the side with a smile. âToo bad.â
He scoffed, his fingers starting to tickle you, making you gasp and fall back on the couch.
âThatâs cheating!â
âLet me read them! Let me read them!â He teased as he continued to tickle you, tears forming in your ears from laughing and trying to push him off. âLet me read them! Let meââ
ââokay!â You managed to say in between gasps.
Jake stopped, his hands still in your waist with a teasing smile. âFor real?â
âOnly if you give me a kiss.â You teased back, pouting your lips.
âMy goddess.â He smiled cheekily as he leaned down for a sweet, tasting, and passionate kiss on your lips. You giggled as his soft hands squeezed your waist.
âYouâre so cringey.â You said as his lips moved down to your neck.
He gently bit you, making you gasp and hit the back of his head. He chuckled, planting a long-lasting kiss in the same spot.
âOnly for you, baby.â
You rolled your eyes at his words. Yet you smiled. Because you were so in love with this man.
âIs this why you have a bump in the head?â
Jakeâs family bursted into laughter at your question, making you frown at your boyfriend.
âThat is so mean!â Jake gasped, dramatically rolling his eyes. He crossed his arms around his waist and lied back on the chair.
âDude, that is exactly why you have a bump in the head.â His older brother snorted. âActually, I need to touch it. Come here.â He teased. Jake pushed him off, making you giggle.
âI feel slightly offended you never showed me this video.â You said as you handed the phone back to the older woman.
âOh, we wanted to. But Jaeyun basically blackmailed us. Didnât want his girlfriend to see how bad of a skater he was.â She commented, giving a cheeky smile to his youngest son.
âMom!â
Everyone at the table continued laughing, making Jake completely lose it. Your hand subconsciously moved to the guyâs thigh, making him sigh.
âIs this hate on jake day?â He complained.
âThatâs everyday, bro.â His brother answered, making you snort.
Your boyfriend turned to you with betrayal in his eyes. âNot you switching sides. Traitor.â
He looked away, making you laugh, your cheeks heating up and starting to hurt from how hard you were laughing.
âDonât talk to Y/nnie like that, Jaeyun!â His father spoke up, making you both look at him. âYou should be thanking her for even being here with a lazy boy like you.â
You and his brother covered your own mouths to stop yourselves from laughing at how Jakeâs jaw dropped. âIâIâm not lazy.â He stuttered.
âHeâs actually very productive, sir.â You decided to speak up.
âOh is he?â His father asked, making you nod.
Without you really noticing, Jake stared at you, that little smile reappearing when he heard you speak up. He knew his family was just joking around, he knew you knew that as well, but he always loved how you were there to defend him, even if it was something little like calling him lazy.
âYou remember how I got a bad test grade in physics?â They all nodded, âJaeyun helped me study and I ended up getting a ninety-five in all of the tests he helped me study with.â
âReally?â Mr. Sim turned to his son, a small proud look on his face.
Jake looked down, a little more shy now.
âI ended up being top three in the class. Your sonâs really smart. Really good tutor.â You commented with a casual demeanor, stuffing your mouth with food.
âIâm glad to hear that, Y/n.â The man smiled.
Jakeâs ears warmed up, his hand grabbing yours under the table for support. You glanced at him and smiled shyly.
âYo, I have another video of Jake falling!â His brother clapped with a laugh.
You let go of your boyfriendâs hand and giggled, âLet me see!â
You said as you scooted closer to his mother and brother. Jake stared at you, a smile appearing on his lips as he watched you completely lose it over the video his brother had shown you.
âDid you really just do a backflip just because you didnât want to say âI love youâ back?â
Jake stared at you in complete shock, watching you casually stand back up in his bed.
âThat I just did.â You answered.
He scoffed, âwhere did you even learn how to do a backflip?â
âI was in gymnastics?â
âNo, you werenât.â
âI couldâve been.â
He tilted his head to the side, knowing you too well. âDid you learn from a tiktok?â You stared at him then smiled innocently, âY/n, youâre seriously going to get hurt one of these days.â He said worriedly, jumping on the bed and pulling you down with him.
âYouâre so cute when you get worried.â You smiled playfully as he wrapped an arm around your waist, lying his head on your chest.
âSorry for not wanting my girlfriend to die for doing a backflip.â He mumbled, the vibration of his voice sending shivers down your spine.
âYouâre literally a silly goose.â You joked.
He raised his head to look at you in utter shock. âYou did not just call me a silly goose.â
âThatâs what you are.â
âThatâs so cringey!â He snorted.
You pushed his face back where it was, making him giggle. You placed your fingers on his head and ran them through his hair, making him hum.
âThanks for today. It was a great day.â You said, feeling Jake smile on your chest. You smiled too, caressing his head. âIâm so happy youâre my boyfriend.â You mumbled, eyes closing.
Jake opened his, raising his head just a bit to look at you. âReally?â
You nodded, opening an eye to smile at him. He shyly smiled, scooting closer so his lips could touch yours. He was positioned between your legs, very comfortably as his arms were on each side of your waist.
âAnd Iâmââ He paused to leave a soft kiss. ââIâm the luckiest man on the planet for having you.â
You giggled, your hands leaving his hair to grab his cheeks instead. âYeah, you are.â
He stuck his tongue out for a second before pressing his lips on yours again, melting with your touch as you smiled into the kiss.
âIf we ever break up, just know someone did voodoo shit on me.â Jake said after pulling away from you.
âWhat if I was the one that did voodoo stuff on you?â You asked, raising your eyebrows.
Jake pretended to think, biting his bottom slip with a grin. âThatâs hot.â
You pushed him off with a laugh, making him rest on his arm with a smile on his face as he watched you.
âYouâre such a weirdo!â
âBut Iâm your weirdo.â He winked playfully, already knowing youâd be on the floor laughing at him.
âMy baby!â
You had exclaimed as Jake appeared out of the trees with his puppy on a leash. With a smile, he approached you, âhi, baby!â He said back.
You glanced at him and scoffed. âI was talking to Layla, you dummy.â
âYou always know how to break my heart.â He touched his heart dramatically, making you laugh as you kneeled down for Layla.
âOh you cute little puppy.â You said in a baby voice, making Jake smile down at both of you as you kept caressing Layla. âI missed you too, cutie.â You pouted as you kissed the puppy.
Jake simply stood there, staring at both of his favorite humans with a sour look in his eyes that screamed âIâm third-wheelingâ. When you kept playing with Layla and ignoring your boyfriend, he let out a huge sigh, getting both of you and Laylaâs attention.
âSomething wrong?â You asked him, completely clueless as you kept babying Layla.
âUh, yeah? You havenât said anything to me? Your boyfriend?â He crossed his arms around his waist, the leash still being held by him.
You chuckled, giving Layla one last kiss before standing up to look at Jake, blowing a kiss in the air to which he tried to grab with his hand like the joker he was. âI just gave a bunch of kisses to Layla, dude.â
âI donât care. I want to kiss my beautiful girl.â He tilted his head to the side, pouting and blinking dramatically, looking exactly like Layla.
You giggled, placing a quick kiss on his lips. Jake instantly melted at your touch, whining when you pulled away and took the leash from him to walk Layla. âItâs been a while since I saw my daughter.â You spoke to the air, Jake basically chased after you. âYou missed me, Layla?â You pouted as you walked in synchronization.
âYes, but I love daddy more!â Jake said in a baby voice, making you gasp.
âShe doesnât even sound like that.â
He shrugged, walking all stiff, stomping on the way. âThatâs what she told me.â
You hummed, glancing his way before you smiled. âYouâre so cute like this.â
âLike what?â
You turned to him, nudging his shoulder with yours. âYou want me to kiss you the same way orââ
ââyes.â
You froze, stared at him, blinked. âYou want to be my puppy?âÂ
You pursed your lips to keep yourself from laughing.
âNot like that! Hey, donâtâdonât laugh like that.â He pointed at you with widened eyes. âYou gave her a bunch of kisses whereas I didnât get any.â He frowned, looking away.
You smiled at your boyfriend, signaling Layla to sit. When she did, you placed a hand on Jakeâs head, patting it. âWhoâs my good boy?â You said in the same tone you use for Layla, making Jake scoff, throwing his head back causing your hand to fall on his chest.
âYouâre so annoying.â He mumbled under his breath but still, his eyes glistened when your eyes locked with his.
âAm I? So you donât want me to kiss you anymore?â You pouted playfully, the hand on his chest moving upwards to his cheek, your thumb lingering on his bottom lip.
His lips twitched into a small grin, âIâm so annoyingly in love with you. Of course I do.âÂ
His hand moved to your waist, pulling you close to him to let his lips move an inch closer to yours.
âNoââ
ââNo PDA, I know.â He finished your sentence with a chuckle, making you look down awkwardly to Layla. Jake grabbed your chin and tilted it upward just so he could look directly into your eyes with that smile of his. âJust a kiss.â He pouted his lips, mimicking a kiss.
You rolled your eyes, leaning close enough that your lips touched before completely locking them together. Jake, like always, melted in your touch, letting you take control before you quickly pulled away, making him whine right when Layla barked.
âLook, like owner, like puppy.â You joked, kneeling down to pet Layla before walking away.
Jake mimicked you before hugging you tightly from behind, keeping you from walking freely.
âGet off me!â
âNever!â
As you two continued to bicker, Layla kept barking and jumping around, making you both laugh.
âEw, whoâs Kim Nari and why is she commenting on Jakeâs posts and tweets. Obsessed much?â Yizhou commented.
âLet me see!â She passed her phone to Yunjin.
You looked up from your Ipad, oblivious to the conversation.
âYou know her?â Yunjin asked as she passed the phone to you. You shrugged as you scrolled down her profile on Instagram, then shook your head, handing back the phone to your best friend.â
âNo idea. Probably a girl from his class or something.â
âIs that not weirder?â Yizhou asked.
You chuckled at her comment and expression. Yizhou was the jealous type, same with Yunjin, maybe even possessive. You, on the other hand, werenât jealous at all.
Jake and you had a healthy relationship, a few misunderstandings there and then but nothing that wasnât fixable with a simple conversation. Jealousy from your end didnât exist. You trusted Jake, he had never given you a reason to make you jealous. He was friendly, sure, your friends always made comments about it, âtoo friendlyâ âsheâll misunderstandâ âif a boy did that to meâŠâ, but you knew Jake, he would never do such a thing.
After the small conversation where the girls discussed how they were the jealous type, you said your goodbyes and parted ways out of the cafeteria. You were supposed to meet up with Jake because of a stupid physics exam you needed to study for.Â
You had forgotten your glasses and were too lazy for contacts today, so you were basically walking blind through campus, trying to find your boyfriend.Â
You would think that when you find your boyfriend with a girl holding his arm for dear life, would make you jealous. And it didâjust a little bit, but you pushed the thought away and smiled when you approached your partner.
âHi!â You smiled politely at the girl.
She ignored you, in a way. She did give you a complete sour look, making your smile fade away. You turned to your boyfriend, who had a similar expression to the girl next to him.
âHey.â He smiled. Though you noticed quickly how his smile didnât reach his eyes, making you tilt your head.
âYou okay?â He nodded, leaning down for a small kiss. You smiled and turned to the girl next to him, âIâm Y/n. Jakeâs girlfriend.â
You didnât try to sound rude, it hadnât even crossed your mind to act that way. You just wanted to say hi to Jakeâs friends, that was all.
âObviously I know that?â She scoffed before turning to Jake, brushing her hand on his arm. âSee you later?â Jake nodded before waving hehe goodbye.
You looked between the two, a small frown finding itself crawling up your lips.
âYouâre going out?â You furrowed your eyes in confusion.
âWhat? I mean, yeah, but itâs a group thing.â He explained.
âOh..okay.â You smiled.
Jake grabbed your chin, âYou okay?â
You nodded, âYeah, I just thought you were helping me study later today but itâs fine. I can study by myself today.â
He smiled, giving you a kiss on the cheek. âYouâre the best. Itâs a last-minute thing. Nariâs birthday.â He mentioned, making you nod.
âNari.â You repeated, he nodded. You nodded back and smiled. âRight, yeah, cool, cool. Cool.â
Just friendly. Thatâs what he was. He would never do something like that to you. He loved you.
âHey, can I ask you something?â
Jake didnât bother looking up from his laptop. He was pretending to be busy just so he wouldnât have to look at you. He couldnât. Not now. Not for a while.
âUh, is it important?â He asked you, sounding uninterested from the start.
You sat up, your back glued to the frame of the bed. You were wearing nothing but your underwear and an oversized t-shirt you had stolen from Jakeâs closet just a second ago.
âUh, I was just going to ask if you were okay. You were acting strange earlier.â You said, the way you stood and the way Jake wasnât paying attention to you at all, made you feel smaller. You hugged your knees, covering yourself.
âYeah, Iâm okay.â He answered, his voice sounding shallow, no emotions.
You nodded, forgetting he wasnât paying attention to you.
âOkay.â You said after a second.
It wasnât normally like this. After being intimate, Jake would still be cuddled up with you, legs and arms all wrapped around you. It made you feel safe. Wanted. He had been your first time, he had been the only person youâve ever been with and was even the one you wanted to be with for the rest of your life. This time? It was awkward. It was almost forced. You had always been communicative about everything, but it was different today. He had been less intimate, more quiet. And that made you feel unsafe. You loved him, you really do, but it almost felt like you had had sex with a stranger, not your boyfriend.
Instead of bringing you water without you having to ask, instead of holding you. He left you. He kissed you, said nothing, grabbed himself a water, and started doing whatever he was doing now.
You felt used and thrown away like a rag doll.
âIâll see you later.â You said, your voice coming out shakier than intended.
Jake took his AirPod out, watching as you moved around to grab your stuff as quickly as possible. âYouâre not sleeping over?â He asked.
You wiped the tears that were beginning to form around the corner of your eyes, before looking at him, a smile appearing in your lips. âUh, I have homework to do.â You lied.
He nodded, going back to his laptop.
You bit your bottom lip to keep yourself from crying and nodded. The usual routine was him trying to convince you to drive you back to your dorm and you complaining that youâd just take an uber, bickering back and forth. It was different. Distant. You walked to him and gave him a quick kiss on the head.
âI love you.â You mumbled against it.
When you heard no response, you nodded and walked away, completely heartbroken.
You never had problems like this before. Relationship fights? Never. You and Jake were the textbook high school sweethearts. The role models to a lot of people. The couple that everyone looked up because of how healthy and communicative you guys were. Communication was never a problem. Seeing him now, being closed off, was breaking you.
You understood needing time alone, that was never a problem for you. You were the type of girl that needed her own time. He understood that. But you always communicated that
So for once, you left it alone. If he needed some time alone, you were okay with that. You could always talk about it the next day.
Right?
Today was a good day. It had been a few days since you spoke to Jake about the intimacy situation. He agreed with you, saying he was just busy and tired. You understood that easily, you even told him to tell you when you needed time alone.
He became busier these days, but still made time for you to see each other for a little bit. You guys were okay.
The reason why itâs such a good day was because your English professor had made an announcement where he called up two of his best students and gave them a letter of recommendation for the internships they had spoken about earlier in the semester. You were one of them, next to Park Jongseongâalso known as Jayâ a high school friend of yours who you had grown distant with, and one of Jakeâs best friends. You started the day with the right foot.
And you were excited to tell Jake. Invite him to eat something. Your treat.
When you started walking around campus, you found him near a bench next to a few of his friends and Kim Nari. The same girl that had spawned out of nowhere and made your friendsâhell, even youâoverthink about everything.
âHey, Nari.â You waved as politely as you could.
She looked you up and down, making you do the sameâat yourself, and smiled awkwardly.
âYikes.â She chuckled dryly, tapping Jake on the shoulder, who was busy speaking to Heeseung and Sunghoon.
âOh, hey.â He spoke dryly.
You frowned at how Jake received you, a small chuckle escaping your lips. âYou okay?â
âWhy wouldnât I be?â He asked.
Your mouth opened to speak, but no words came out. You scratched the back of your neck awkwardly, âWell, you know the internship I was planning on doing this summer? Mr. Suh gave me and Jay a letter of recommendation and Iâm pretty sure Iâll be having a permanent job at the company!â You squealed, clearly excited.
âNo way, congratulations, Y/nnie!â Sunghoon smiled, throwing a high-five in the air for you to catch.
You laughed and thanked him, turning to your boyfriend. Confused at his reaction, you waved your hand in front of him, âEarth to Sim Jaeyun?â You joked.
He stared down at you, a look in his eyes that you didnât recognize.Â
âI was thinking maybe we could go eat something? My treat, of course.â You smiled proudly. âSeeing as Iâll be employed.â
âHave I ever told you how annoying you are?â
He spoke after a few seconds.
You chuckled, thinking it was a joke. âPlenty of times, actually.â
You smiled, not understanding. From Jakeâs side, Nari snickered, making you frown.
âDid calling you annoying make you want to sleep with other people?â
You pursed your lips then caught yourself laughing. âWhat now?â
âYou think I wouldnât find out?â He scoffed a laugh.
âFind out what?â You asked.
âThat youâre being passed around, sleeping around.â He spat. You stared at Jake in utter shock, stepping back at his sudden and very brutal words. âYou said all about trust and communication and youâre over there cheating on me? Calling me names and shit?â He raised his voice, gaining attention from the crowd walking.
Your eyes started to move around, âI-Iâm so confused right now.â You looked back at his friend before looking at your boyfriend. âYouâre the only person Iâve ever been with?â You said in a smaller voice. It wasnât a question, it was a fact.
âYouâre a liar.â He laughed.
âJake, where is this all coming from?â You shook your head, starting to feel light-headed. âIâve never done anything to make you feel this way, have I?â
âWell, how the hell would I know? Youâve been keeping it a secret from me.â
You tilted your head, your lips trembling as you tried to keep yourself composed and not cry in public. âCan you please be specific? Who told you all this? I donât even hang out with anyone other than your friends and my friends. Why would I be doing sexual stuff with anyone other than you?â You asked.
Sunghoon kissed his teeth, making a noise that distracted you. He apologized and looked away.
âIt doesnât matter who told me. What matters is that youâre a fucking slut.â
A single tear shed from your eyes, making you wipe it quickly. âIt does matter who told you all of this because itâs a complete lie. Why would you believe someone else over me?â You asked, scrunching your nose. âWas it Sunghoon? Heeseung?â He stared at you blankly. âWas it Nari?â
âDonât involve me in this.â The girl scoffed.
Still, she stood behind Jake. And it made your heart ache because that was usually you in that spot.
You turned to Jake and smiled sadly, still trying not to cry. âLetâs talk about this later. I-I canât do this right now.â You said softly. âNot in public, please.â
âY/n, I donât want to fucking talk later. Just admit it.â
âIâm not admitting something that Iâm not.â You responded back with that same voice you always used on him, not being used to being harsh on Jake. âYou really think Iâd do something like that to you?â Your vision blurred as you spoke.
âI donât know anymore.â
âWell thatâs insane, Jake. Weâve been whatâalmost four years together and you chose to believe her words over mine?â You cried, not letting him speak. âDo you know how stupid that is? Is this why you were acting off? Because ever since you started hanging out with her, youâve been off.â
âRight, now you want to talk about it.â He scoffed.
âI always want to talk about it, Jake! Youâre the one that always brushes off the topic. Weâre adults, for Godâs sake, if you want to be with someone else, you can just break up with me.â You cried in front of him. âYou donât need to call me by names that you know donât even make sense to use!â
âI didnât cheat on you.â
âNeither did I.â You bit your lip.
âWhy does it cost you so much to admit it? Youâre a fucking whore, Y/n. Youâre a gold-digger, and a fucking slut. Admit it.â You furrowed your eyebrows in complete heartbreak.
âA gâa gold digger?â You repeated, taking a fist of your hair to keep yourself from falling apart. âJake, I never ask you to buy me stuff. What the actual fuck is wrong with you? The only thing we spend money on is freaking ramyeon. I come here with the news that Iâm being fucking employed in a few months and this is what you say to me?â You laughed, running your fingers through your hair in frustration. "That I'm a gold digger?"
With nothing else, instead of listening to him again, you quickly took off your necklaceâthe one that Jake gave you on your first anniversaryâgrabbed his hand and placed it. âHere. Give it to her since you want her so badly you accuse me of things you know Iâd neverâin my lifeâdo to you.â You gave him a saddened smile.
You glanced at Nari for a second, almost losing it over how her face completely turned upside downâa smile, eyes shining brightâyou almost lost it.
You wiped your tears and ignored Jake, walking away from the scene, ignoring the people around you.
Behind you, had been standing Jay, watching the scene unfold with a pain in his heart. He watched as you walked away, his legs moving almost on his own as he ran to catch up to you.
âY/n.â He called after you.
You continued to wipe your tears, ignoring whoever was calling. For a second, you almost collapsed on the floor as soon as you realized you were nowhere to be seen by the others. But you didnât, because the moment you opened your eyes, he was there.
âShh, youâre okay.â Jay held you, backpack thrown just next to you as one arm held you close to him, covering you so you could let it all out, whilst the other was running through your hair. âItâs okay. Youâre going to be okay. Just let it all out.â
You cried even harder at his words.
It was stupid how much an accusation from the person you trusted the most could do to you.
Jay kissed the top of your head, lifting your face enough so he could see you. âI can take you to Yizhuo or someone. You want me to do that?â You nodded, âokay, let me call them, yeah? Stay here.â You nodded again as you watched him stand up and take his phone out.
You wiped your face, but the tears kept coming. You managed to stand up, Jay quickly turning his attention to you. He put his phone down and gently took you in his arms again.
âIâm so sorry about Jakeââ
ââdonât apologize for him, Jay.â You managed to laugh between the sobs. âItâs not your fault.â You hiccuped.
âNeither is yours.â He whispered gently.
That made you break. Completely. Jay had felt it all. And he hated Jake for it. He hated himself for letting his best friend treat the way he just did.

The moment you pulled over in front of the bar, you regretted it. There stood a very drunken Sim Jaeyun, stumbling on his own feet as he held onto the pole whilst he kept mumbling nonsense words to the security guard, you already knew this was going to be a long ride.
It was a little bit selfish on your part, you would be lying to yourself if you said you didnât want to hear what came out of a drunken Jake, especially after the messages he had sent you. It wasnât that you were going to forgive him, or go back to him after this, you were just curious.
âThere she is!â Jake excitedly pointed right at you, making you realize you were actually there, for him. You donât even say anything as Jake made his way to you, again, stumbling on his feet. All you could do was look away, tapping your fingers on the wheel anxiously.
Without saying anything, you unlocked the door so he could get in, mentally preparing yourself for a very quiet and awkward silence, or a non-stop blabbering from the guy. Both ended in a very unfinished discussion.
âI didnât think youâd come get me. I thought I was hallucinating.â Jake said in a pout, fumbling with the seatbelt. You said nothing and instead stared down to where the seatbelt was. âI hate seatbelts, they never work.â He mumbled.
You pushed his hands away softly, taking the seatbelt from him and connecting it to the buckle for him before leaning back to your seat.
âThanks.âÂ
He gave you that sweet smile. The one that used to make you smile so hard. When he noticed your blank expression, he sighed, anxiously starting to tap his fingers on the arm rest between you. For a moment, you closed your eyes, trying to calm yourself before you could throw him out the car. When he didnât stop, you pushed his legs to the side, opening the small compact in front of his seat to take out the small star squishy, handing it to his left hand. âOh.., thanks, Y/n.â
He mumbled, a little more quiet but comfortable now.
Instead of responding, you started the car, turning the radioâs volume up in hope there was a good song playing to interrupt whatever was happening.
As you started driving away from the bar, you couldnât help but to glance at Jake a few times, hoping heâd be asleep from how quiet he was. But instead, you found him leaning back on the seat, staring right at you. The look in his eyes, it was different but scarily similar from the one he used to look at you with when you were together, almost as if he were reminiscing what used to be.
âWhat?â You asked when you caught him.
He chuckled softly, looking at the window with a small ânothingâ leaving his lips.
For a second there, you almost smiled when you heard his laugh, and you hated yourself for it.
âWhere are you taking me?â He mumbled, licking his lips as he sat up straight, watching as your hands moved smoothly around the wheel. âAre you kidnapping me?â He snorted a small laugh.
You furrowed your eyebrows, looking at him from the rear view mirror. âSure, Jake.â You muttered.
He nodded, fidgeting the small toy you had given him between his fingers. âI thought you were joking about picking me up.â He confessed.
âYou sound pretty sober for someone who kept messing up his text messages just a few minutes ago.â You showed a bland smile, not to him, just ahead.
He giggled, the sound of it echoing on your ears. He pinched his fingers together, raising it right in front of him, holding it close to his face as he smiled. âStill a liiiittle bit drunk. The security guard took my drink away because I told him you were picking me up.â He frowned.
âHe knows me?â You asked, glancing at him for a quick second.
He shrugged, laughing continuously. âI told him that my ex was picking me up because I messed up and because I wanted to apologize,â you froze for a second. âthen he was like âmaybe you should be sober when you do itâ and Iâm like âsir, no offenseââ well, actually, Iâm not sure what else I said, if Iâm being honest.â He said in between laughs.
When he quieted down after hearing no response from him, he sighed, loudly this time. âYouâre pretty quiet.â
âIâm driving.â
âRemember that night when we went for a late night drive and you started saying I drove like a grandma?â He chuckled, âyou looked so pretty that night. I mean, you always do but that day was just very special. We had our first kiss that night and it was raining, I remember you said it was so magical.â He lied back on the seat, looking at you with a soft smile. âI remember that night well.â He mumbled quietly.
You slowed down the car as the light turned orange, putting your foot on the brake. âWhy were you out here alone, Jake?â You asked, completely turning your attention to him once the light went red. âWere you just...drinking for no reason?â You looked at him up and down, with sympathy.
Jake pouted then gave you a flat smile, âI guess.â
âYou guess?â You scoffed.
âYeah, canât I just drink to drink? Is that so bad?â He furrowed his eyebrows, looking for answers in your eyes before you opened your mouth, watching as you blinked away. âDoâdo you not like that I drink?â He mumbled the question. âI can stop if thatâs what you want, you know? Iâm not an alcoholic, Iâm just in my feelings. I swear, if you tell me to stop drinking, I will.â He sat up straight.
Before you could say anything, you heard a honk coming from behind you, causing you to snap out from the conversation to drive, making Jake sigh very out loud.
âItâs none of my business if you drink or not, Jake.â
You said after a few seconds of silence, putting your hands back on the wheel.
âOkay.â He whispered.
âOkay.â You whispered back.
He nodded, looking out the window to distract himself. âAre you and Jay dating?â
You stopped at the red light, instantly turning to him with a confused expression on your face. âWhat?â
âYou and Jay. I donât know, you guys act like you like each other or something.â He shrugged his shoulders, âAlways hanging out with each other. Seriously, ever since you came back, itâs like youâve been inseparable.â
âWe arenât dating. But even if we were, itâs none of your business, Jake.â He rolled his eyes, signaling you to drive. You did as he said, looking ahead, âWhy do you even care, anyway?â You asked with a sour look.
âI donât.â
âIf you didnât, you wouldnât be asking.â
He scoffed, âI donât like the idea of my best friend and my ex-girlfriend dating, sue me.â
You blinked multiple times, trying to understand the words that came out of his mouth. âHow is that bad compared to you dating the girl that spread rumors about me?â You scoffed back.
âIâm not dating her anymore.â
âStill did. Jake, is this why you got drunk? Because you donât want me dating Jay?â You asked carefully, your hands gripping on the steering wheel tighter than before. âBecause if thatâs the reason, then thatâs insanely immature.â You shook your head in disbelief.
âSo what if that is the reason? Yeah, maybe I got mad that my best friend fucking ditched me to hang out with my ex-girfrliend.â You froze at his sudden raise of voice, making you flinch. âOr maybe itâs the fact that after I tried to speak to you to apologize, you decided to ignore me to hang out with my best friend!â
âIâm actually going to crash us into a tree if you keep talking, Jaeyun.âÂ
You threatened, making him freeze on the spot and slip back on the seat. âY-you brought it up.â He muttered.
âBecause I didnât think youâd actually tell me the reason.â You responded back bluntly.
Jake bit his bottom lip, playing with the star squishy. âWell,â He paused, calming his voice. âDo you like him? Jay?â
You glanced at him for a quick second. âWeâre just friends.â
âWe were also friends.â
You sighed, not knowing what to say. âThatâsâŠdifferent. Why are you asking me this? All of a sudden you care?â You shook your head.
âIâve always cared about you, Y/n.â
You scoffed, pulling over to his apartment complex, âYou have a funny way of showing it, Jake.â
He sighed, reclining his seat back to its original position as you parked before turning to your side. âI know. And I plan on fixing that. Fixing myself. I know I messed up but I promise Iâll change, Y/n.â He tried to reach for your hand which you gently took away, making him frown.
âWhat made you change your mind all of a sudden?â You ask in a hesitant tone. âWas it Jay?â He slowly nodded, âSo it wasnât even me?â You scoffed.
âWhat do you mean?â He tilted his head in confusion. âOf course itâs because of you.â
You grabbed your face in your hands in frustration before looking back at him, âDid you just realize youâre wrong because of Jay? Because you donât like that weâre friends?â You looked him up and down.
âOne of the many reasons, yes, butââ
âYouâre unbelievable!â You raised your voice at him yet it stood with disappointment, making his whole expression turn into a sad puppy-ed one, âSo after all this time, you still canât listen to me and not someone else?â Jake stayed quiet, his mouth moving but no words coming out, making you sigh. âJust save it, please. Youâre drunk, you should rest.â You unlocked the doors, not looking at him.
âIâm not leaving until we talk, Y/n.â He reached to lock the door, his cologne hitting you harder than it ever did before. âPlease.âÂ
His breath hit you, the scent of alcohol making you realize how dumb this was. âWeâre doing this when youâre sober. Now go.â You unbuckled his seatbelt, causing him to fall back on his seat.
âOkay.â He stepped out of the car in a second. âCan you walk me to my apartment? I donât know where my keys are.â He mumbled as he started fumbling through his pockets.
With no hesitation, you got out of the car and quickly turned it off, rushing to his side. Jake, as if it were routine, snuck his arm around your shoulder, holding on to you. His hand gently fell on your arm, making you stiffened for a second before you started walking into the apartment complex. You said nothing on the way, only listened to Jakeâs little rant about the series he recently started watchingâthe same series you had said was your favorite because it reminded you of Jake. But you looked past it, not wanting to draw attention to yourself, to remind the drunken man you were carrying, that it was you who was carrying him back to his place.
âCan you give me your key?â You asked in a quiet and gentle voice as you both stepped out of the elevator.
Jake fumbled his pockets, looking at you with a drunken smile as he handed you his keys.
âThanks.â You mumbled as you stopped in front of the apartment. Smoothly, you opened the door and pushed both of you inside, closing the door behind you as you made your way straight to the guyâs bedroom.
Jake started saying words, words you somehow chose not to hear as you pushed the door to his bedroom open and basically threw him on the bed. Unfortunately for you, his grip on you hadnât loosened up and you fell right beside him on the bed, making you roll your eyes as you sat up.
âTake your shoes off.â You ordered, completely ignoring how he was still holding onto you.
âCan you help me, please?â He pouted, reaching for his feet but failing to grab them.
You sighed, taking his shoes off and going to stand up to put them in his closet. Before you could stand up, Jake grabbed your arm, stopping you from doing so.Â
âWhat?â
âDonât leave.â
You stared at him, another sigh escaping your lips as you gave him a flat smile. âIâm just putting your shoes in your closet, Jake.â At your answer, Jake nodded, letting go of your arm.
You quickly stepped into his closet, placing his shoes where the others were. As you were about to walk out, your foot bumped into a hardened box, making you glance at its way to move it away. A pastel-yellow colored box stood out from his hung jackets, making you stare at it, frozen in place.
That same box looked exactly like the one you had given him for his birthday last year, one that he had said heâd keep forever. And it hadnât crossed your mind that maybe he did mean it when he said that.
You glanced at Jake, whose eyes had been fluttering open, trying to stay awake, before you looked back down to the box. You couldnât. You couldn't meddle into his things. It took everything in you to push the box back in the dark to pretend it wasnât there and not open it for a quick peek.
âIâm going to get you some water and Advil, donât fall asleep yet.â You mumbled quietly as you stepped out of the closet and walked past Jake.
âOkay, Y/nnie.â
You smiled at yourself at the nickname, quickly making your way to the kitchen to find Advil and a glass of water, then walked back into the room. You put the stuff down on the nightstand and patted Jakeâs arm to wake him up.
âJake.â
He hummed.
âTake the Advil first and then you can sleep.â
He hummed again.
You sighed, already running out of patience. You pushed him further into the bed, taking a seat next to him, the bed shifting its weight under you. You took the Advil and with the other hand grabbed Jakeâs chin to softly open it. âTongue.â You simply said. Jake stuck his tongue out just a tiny bit for you to be able to place the Advil on it, âswallow.â He closed his mouth, wincing as the Advil went down his throat, making him sit up.
âWater?â He nodded. You passed him the water and he took with a flat smile and shut eyes, then he sipped all of it, the only sound in the room being the gulps of water.
When he finished, he opened his eyes and stared at you. âThank you.â
You gave him a small smile, âof course.â
He bit his lip, putting the glass back on the night stand before falling back on the bed, making you smile a little bit. He looked exactly like a little kid. Face buried in his pillow, shirt lifted slightly up to reveal the small belly skin. You almost felt like you were back to six months ago, a very familiar place.Â
You began to stand up, but the softness of his voice stopped you.
âIâm sorry for hurting you, Y/n.â
You froze in place, not wanting to make a sound.
âIâm so sorry.â He cried into his pillow, making you shut your eyes. âI-I shouldâve known. I shouldâve believed you before anyone else. I shouldâve asked you. I shouldâve listened to you.â He stumbled with his words. âI wish we could go back. I know we canât. But I wish.â
His voice sounded shakier, sadder, and it made your heart hurt. Because you had never seen Jake like this before, this vulnerable. It made you believe he had finally changed.
âI want to change, trust me, I do. I want to be better for you. B-but you hate me, you deserve someone better. You deserve to be with someone who sees you.â He choked on his words.
You didnât know what to say. Itâs as if the cat had cut your tongue.
âI donât hate you.â
You donât. You could never hate Jake.
âYou should. I hurt you.â
He said, still with his face buried in the pillow, making his voice sound muffled.
âYou did. But that doesnât mean I hate you.â You said in a soft tone, turning around to take a look at Jake.
He unburied his face, taking the pillow in his hands as he looked at you with reddened eyes. âD-do you think one day, youâll forgive me?â He asked in between breaths.
âThatâs if you have a good apology, Jake.â You smiled at him.
He chuckled, looking down at his hands as a tear fell down. âIâm sorry I let you down, Y/n. I promise Iâll make it up to you.â He said, his voice trembling. âI donât care how long it takes for you to forgive me, but Iâll make it up. Iâll do anything.â He nodded repeatedly.
You stared at him for a moment before you smiled sadly, âJakeâŠIâm happy that youâre trying and everything, I really am. But usââ you paused, making Jake frown. ââitâs over between us.â
At his reactionâhis puffed, and teared up eyes and frownâyou looked away, your own eyes betraying you by tearing up.
âB-but couples fight all the time. Thatâs how their relationships get stronger, no? They communicate andââ
ââNot our relationship, Jake.â You cut him off, making him sigh. âThatâs why we broke up in the first place. I canât deal with that again.â
Jake shook his head, standing up and grabbing your hand. âIâll work on it.â
âJake.â
âPlease.â He begged.
You looked down at his hand holding yours, âJake, you canât just expect us to go back together because you apologize. It doesnât work like that.â You stated, very firmly. "at least not now." You added with sincerity.
He looked at you, tears spilling down his cheek. âOkay.â He whispered.
You smiled. âOkay?â
He nodded.
âOkay.â You stated softly.
You pulled away from his hand, guiding him back to his bed. He went along, not doing anything but looking at you on the way. As he lay back on the bed, he looked up at you.
You smiled and leaned closer, making him shut his eyes. You let your lips touch his forehead just for a second, before you walked away to turn the light off and walk away.
âY/n?â
You looked back just as you were about to shut the door. âYeah?â
âI love you.â
You stared at him, even in the dark, you could tell his eyes were drifting to sleep.
âGood night, Jake.â

When you stepped out of your building, with your glasses and with your hair all over your face, you realized that maybe you shouldâve cleaned yourself a little bit before walking out. Jay was wearing a jacket with a dark blue hoodie under, clearly freezing his ass off but acting like he wasnât. His lips trembling said otherwise.
âThe weatherâs so nice.â You started the conversation as you hit his arm with the rest of your long sleeve, making him chuckle.
âYouâre insane.â
You gave him a playful smile, standing beside him. âSoâŠwhat are you doing here? Not that Iâm complaining. When I said you genuinely saved me, you genuinely saved me.â You laughed.
Jay smiled, looking around as he took out his hand from his pocket to scratch his eyebrow. âIâm glad. Your roommate is a bitâŠno offense, but really unkind. Iâm surprised they paired you with her.â He commented, âyouâre like, the opposite.â
âIt is what it is, isnât it?â You asked.
He nodded, stepping off on the stairs to start walking. You followed slightly behind, seeing as you had shorter legs than him, and stepped into the actual campus.
âIs it weird living on campus?â Jay asked.
You frowned for a second in thought, then shook your head. âNot really, I only come here to sleep. Most of my time I spent it at work or the library. Or with you, at least recently.â You let out a giggle, making him shyly smile.
âSo you hate living on campus?"
âNot necessarily. Just who Iâm rooming with, I guess. Which is why Iâm definitely taking on that offer about looking at apartments with you as soon as possible.â
Jay hummed in understatement, looking down at how your feet walked in synchronization. âHey, what ifâwhat if you move into my apartment?â You side-eyed him, making him chuckle shyly. âNot permanently. Justâyou know, I have a spare room that my mom uses whenever she comes to visit or when someone needs it, you know? You wouldnât have to worry about rent or anything.â He suggested, his hands waving in the air nervously.
You smiled at him. âActually?â
âYeah, why not? Unless youâre not comfortable. I understand that completely.â He nodded with a flat smile. âJust a suggestion.â He said, giving you a playful shoulder nudge.
âI canât. Youâre already helping me apartment huntingâŠâ
âWell, thatâs what good friends are for.â He shrugged casually. âYouâre just more special than the others, I guess.â He added with a laugh.
âSpecial, huh?â You raised an eyebrow teasingly, making him roll his eyes.
âOf course you are.â He said in a much serious tone, making you bite your bottom lip and nod, looking away as the air blew on your face softly. âAnyway, itâs just so you donât have to deal with your roommate. You can say ânoâ. I can accept rejection.â You snorted a laugh, making him smile. âDamn, didnât think youâd laugh in my face, though.â
You covered your mouth with your left hand, playfully pushing him away with the right one, making him laugh along as the two of you walked around the corner right outside campus.
Before Jay could speak, his phone buzzed, making him quickly take out his phone from his pocket to glance at it.
âImportant?â You asked, sneaking a glance as well but barely seeing anything.
He shook his head, putting the phone back in his back pocket. âNah.âÂ
You nodded, looking ahead as Jay pointed at the convenience store on the corner street, âLetâs go eat something. My treat.âÂ
âYouâre giving me lots of treats lately.â He snorted a laugh, âby next week, I might owe you a total of one million dollars.â You joked.
Jay shook his head as he started walking, looking ahead. âNonsense. You donât owe me anything.â
âI beg to differ.â
âAll Iâm doing is helping you out a little. Donât think about repaying me or anything, please.â You stared at him, a sigh escaping your lips but no words coming out, making Jay glance at you. âIs something wrong?â
You shook your head, waving your hand in the air as if to say âIâm coolâ. âIâm just wondering how come you donât have a girlfriend. Not that itâs a bad thing, I justâyouâre a gentleman, you know?â You said, tilting your head to the side in confusion.
He nodded, looking away with a shy smile on his lips. âIâtrust me, I donât know either. I guess I just havenât been looking for anyone.â He shrugged. Jay was lying through his teeth.Â
You pouted, then smiled as a question popped in your head. âNot even a crush?â
You.
He chuckled, shaking his head after you appeared in his mind.
Of course he wouldnât say that to you. He didnât even consider you a crush, per se. You were more than that, you were something to him, but not just a crush. A crush was someone you admired from afar because of the idea you planted of said person. But Jay knew you, the type of person you are, what you like, what you dislike, your favorite movies, the way you reacted to stuff and what you would say after it. Thatâs not something just a âcrushâ does to you.
So, he didnât have a crush. He wasnât technically lying to you. Was he?
A beautiful gasp echoed in his ears, causing him to startle himself. He smiled when he saw you pointing your index finger in his face.
âWhat?â
âYou thought of someone, didnât you?â You asked with excitement, thinking she cracked the code.
âNo, I didnât.â
You giggled, âYeah, you did!â
Jay stared at you with squinted eyes then looked away, making you smile proudly. âYou donât have to tell me who it is. Whoever it is thoughâŠthey are really lucky.â
âYou think so?â You nodded. He looked down at you and gave you a flat smile, giving you a pat in the head to which you pushed him off, making him laugh. âSheâs a much better person than me. If anything, Iâm the lucky one.â He added.
You dramatically covered your mouth. âIf that is true, then thatâs amazing. Do you plan on talking to her? Make a move?â You asked with a smile. That precious smile that first made Jay lie eyes on you back in high school.
âUh, we talkânormal, like friends.â He stumbled across his words, making you look at him attentively, as if to say ârelax, take your timeâ, an expression he always admired. âItâs complicated. Sheâs going through a lot of things and I donât want to be a burden.â He shook his head.
You stopped in front of the convenience store, turning to Jay, you placed your hand on his shoulder. âYouâre everything but a burden, Jay. I hate that you say you are. If this person is as kind as you say they areâŠtheyâd think the same. And Iâm sure theyâd be more than happy to have you as company.â
Jay stared down at you for a second, his eyes leaving yours to look at where your hand was. âThanks, Y/n. Tâthat means a lot coming from you.â
Letting your hand fall back on your body, you smiled. âAnyone would be lucky to be close to you, Jongseong.â
âAaaand you ruined the moment.â
You snorted a laugh, quickly patting his head before stepping into the store.
For a second there, Jay stood in the same place, wondering what the hell he saved in his past life to have someone like you, to have you say something that made him believe there was no one else that could ever make him feel the way he did with you.
And fuck, he hated the fact that he knew he would never make a move on you, even if you said he should give it a try.
He couldnât do that to Jake, or to you, for that matter.
Jakey boy:Â yo
Jakey boy:Â can i talk to you?
Jay sighed as the messages came through, quickly glancing at you. You were at the register, talking to the lady behind it with a smile. He scratched his eyebrow and opened his friendâs messages.
Jay:Â I'm out right now, is it important?
Jakey boy:Â u getting laid? đ
Jay:Â just eating with a friend, iâll call u when im back home
Jakey boy:Â itâs ok
Jakey boy:Â i just wanted an opinion
Jay:Â on?
Jakey boy:Â y/n
Jakey boy:Â Iâm going to apologize to her
Jay swallowed nervously, sending a forced reaction emoji to his last message before he turned his phone off. He turned to look at you once again, your smile infecting the register lady as you paid for a sweet treat. He ran his fingers through his hair, looking away before it could infect you.
He waited patiently, although his foot tapping on the end of the chair said otherwise.
âI canât believe I never forced you to try these.â You said, handing one of the popsicles to Jay as you sat back down. âTheyâre the best popsicles ever.â
Jay smiled subconsciously as he tore the package off with you, "you've always been obsessed with banana flavored treats.â He chuckled.
You smiled widely, taking a delicious bite, making a sound that made Jayâs stomach flutter. He shook his head before taking a bite, the same size as you. He wasnât the biggest fan of banana flavored treats, but for you? The man would try anything.
At his unfamiliar expression, you furrowed your eyebrows. âYou hate it, don't you?â Before he could respond, you sighed. âItâs okay, I can eat another one by myself.â You added as you reached for his popsicle.
Jay threw his head back, shaking it as he ate the popsicle peacefully before opening his mouth to speak. âItâs surprisingly very good.â
You sat back and cheered, making the guy chuckle. âActually?â
He nodded.
As you opened your mouth to speak with excitement, a buzz came through your phone, making you mumble a small sorry before taking it.
A single text from Jake.
Jaeyun:Â can we talk?
You stared at it blankly, making Jay frown slightly at your reaction.
âDid something happen?â He asked after a second.
You put your phone down, shaking your head with a small laugh. âItâs nothing,â You took your popsicle back in your mouth to stop talking.
âAre you sure?â
You glanced at him and nodded, gathering the garbage in a pile to put it inside the plastic back. âYeah, sorry. Itâs just Jake.â
âOh.â
You chuckled. âYeah, oh.â
Jay let out a sigh, âWanna talk about it?â
He did not want to talk about it.Â
âThanks, but no. I feel like such a burden bringing the same topic over and over ever since I came back.â You chuckled awkwardly.
Jay reached for your hand, the hand that was moving from plastic to plastic just to do something. âYou could never be a burden, Y/n.â He looked into your eyes with an expression you hadn't noticed before, making you blow air into your cheeks, making him smile a little bit. âSure. Iâm tired of hearing about Jake being an asshole, but coming from you? Nothing is a burden.â
You nodded slowly, giving him a saddened smile. âJake is an asshole.â
He snorted a laugh, rolling his eyes playfully. âSuch an asshole.â
You both smiled at each other, a real smileâinnocent, even. And Jay wished you two could stay here forever, but he also knew that wasnât possible. So again, like the coward he thought he was, he let go of your hand and instead patted your head. âNow letâs finish this thing so I can walk you back to your dorm and rest that pretty head of yours.â He teased.
You scoffed, hitting his shoulder playfully. âJust give me the damn popsicle back. What do you mean by this thing, you hater?â
All Jay could do was smile at you, going unnoticed by the way both of your expressions turned light again by the smallest teasing joke.
mars yap actually kill me bc I hate writing how I want my future husband to be GET ME A JAY NOW.

âWhat if she casts a spell on me?â You whispered, slightly leaning over to the boy beside you.
Right beside you, Jay snorted. He knew it was a joke, but deep down, he also knew it was something else. And he really didnât like seeing you this way, hell, he always wished he could do more than just be there for you, he always wished he could hold you when you spoke about your problems and opened up to him. But he couldnât do that, he couldnât betray that trust between him and his best friend, and he definitely didnât want to ruin the friendship you and him have. So of course, he decided that as long as he was able to be there for you, he was okay.
âIâd probably keep my distance from you.â He teased back.
You quietly gasped with an offended smile, hitting his arm which made him chuckle, smile even. This way is how he liked seeing you.
Once you both quieted down and turned your attention back to Mr. Suh, Jay couldnât help to sneak a glance at youâmore specifically, your side profile. He always admired you from afar, seeing as he couldnât really do much but stare. But even just that, made him feel guilty.
âOkay, you guys seriously need to take Y/n and Jay as an example for this project.â That caught his attention quickly, âwanna get a 100? Brainstorm, talk and talk! Donât use ChatGPT to get ideas, hell, donât use it at all, thatâs lame as fuââ he covered his mouth, ââalmost got myself fired there. Anyways, have a great day!â Everyone laughed and stood up, leaving the class room. âY/n, can I speak to you really quick?â
You stopped midway, looked back at Jay who simply smiled at you. âIâll wait outside.â You nodded, walking back to Mr. Suh.
âHow are you? Is everything okay?â Mr. Suh asked.
âEverything is as okay as it can be, sir.â You gave him a tight smile.Â
âY/n, are you sure? Mr. Park told me you didnât feel okay last class. You know you can talk to me, right?â He leaned on his desk.
âI know. Jay didnât really know what happened by the way, he was just worried so he said that.â You explained casually.
âThen what happened? Something personal?â
You shrugged. âKind of. Family stuff. Money, the usual.â You nodded, more to yourself.
âDoes this also have to do with Jaââ You glared at him, making him literally zip his mouth with his finger. ââdonât say his name, sorry.â
âI just havenât had a really good time, to be honest. But I wonât miss class, sir, I promise.â You sighed.
Mr. Suh squinted his eyes then nodded towards the door, âgo ahead, kiddo. If you ever want to talk, though, my doorâs open.â You nodded, waving on the way as you walked out.
And there he was, Jay, waiting right by the door with his fingers wrapped around his backpack. You smiled sincerely at him as you two walked to the library.
âYou okay?â
You nodded. He went silent.
Because he knew you didnât want to talk about it.
The two of you headed to the library in a painful silence, one that Jay wanted to replace with affection to demonstrate he was there for you, but again, he chose to just stand there. As soon as you entered the quiet space, Jay quickly moved a chair for you to sit on, you mumbling a âthank youâ after with a smile.
He sat next to you, the side of his leg brushing against yours on the way.
âI canât believe we're doing a formula one skit for our english class.â You giggled as you turned your ipad on, sliding it further to your left so it would be between you and Jay. âMr. Suh is absolutely going to lose it.â
âItâs the foreigners in us.â He smiled cheekily, his smile fading away for a quick second when he checked his phone before turning it off and smiling again. âAnd everyone knows Formula one so..â
âYou actually have me hooked with the races now.â You said as you began to click on the page you left off.
âWait, actually? I didnât think youâd care about it.â He lowered his voice.
You smiled at him, nudging your shoulder with his. âJay, you were absolutely crashing out about how the season was going, it sounded entertaining. I didnât know you were such a fan of it so I thought Iâd give it a try. Itâs fun, and I find George Russell interesting.â
From one moment to another, Jayâs shy and embarrassed expression turned into a sour one, âOut of all drivers thatâs who you like? Seriously?â
âWhat? You canât judge me for who I like!â He pursed his lips in thought, making you laugh. âI like Verstappen though, that kid Kimi too.â
Jayâs eyes lightened up, making you roll your eyes. âDid you know I met Max Verstappen once?â
âYes, itâs all over your social media.â He snuggled his hand inside his backpack, pulling a self-made photocard of him and Max Verstappen, a picture that Jake, Jungwon, and Sunghoon were also in but were cut off, making you burst into laughter. âWhat?â
âOh, youâre obsessed obsessed,â You smiled as you grabbed the photocard from him.
âMy most prized possession that is, Miss Y/n.â
When you accidentally laughed a little too loud, the sound of the librarian shushing you echoed in the grand room, making both you and Jay lie back awkwardly on your seats as you now quietly giggle.
âYou guys dating now?â
That voice you could recognize anywhere, and you hated yourself for it, snapped you out of the moment of rare happiness you had had in days. For a milli-second, you ignored whatever was going onâJake standing just in front of you two with an expression that not even himself could explain, and Jay, looking straight at you in hope that maybe you didnât hear what Jake saidâbut when you looked up, you gave him a smile, an honest one, but definitely not a kind one.
âIâm not doing this in a library, Jaeyun.â
Jay could only stay quiet, because he knew if he spoke, heâd lose one of you in a quick second, or both, that was if he said the wrong thing.
âWell, youâre lucky, because Iâm not here for you. I'm here for Jay,â he threw a sarcastic smile right at you, making you roll your eyes as you started closing your iPad and notebook. âI didnât think you would be here. Wouldnât say Iâm surprised though, seeing as youâve been hanging out awfully a lot together.â He mumbled, tapping his fingernails on the table.
Instead of responding or giving him any reaction, you turned to Jay as you put all your stuff inside your bag. âWe can finish this tomorrowââ
ââso you can spend more time with him?â Jake coughed âcasuallyâ.
âDude.â Jay managed to mutter to his direction.
You scoffed, turning to him. âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âYou come back, we have a fight, and now youâre hanging out with my best friend.â He looked around, silently laughing as if he were insane. âYouâre looking for a rebound or something?â He looked you up and down, completely ignoring his friend, who he had just basically offended.
You grabbed your bag and disgustingly glared at him. âFirst of all, it wasnât a fight, it was barely a conversation where I was the only one making points. Second, why the hell would I be looking for a rebound? Iâm not you. And I would never do something like that to Jay.â You stood up, glanced at Jay with a tight smile then glared once again at Jake. âNow if youâll excuse me, Iâm going to be leaving before you make another dumb comment that makes no sense at all and wastes my time. See you.â
Jay quickly stood up when you started walking away, grabbing Jake by the arm to stop him. âYou seriously need to stop bothering her, dude.â He commented softly.
âYouâre seriously falling for her dumb act?â He scoffed.
âWhat act? Sheâs just existing and youâre making it a problem.â Jake took back his arm, slightly pushing Jay away.
âI cannot believe youâre taking her side.â
Jay wiped his hand on his face, âitâs not that, Jake. You guys have problems that you need to fix, Iâm friends with both of you. I may be your best friend, but that doesnât necessarily mean Iâll always agree with everything you say.â
The Australian boy rolled his eyes, âwhatever, man. Iâll see you later.â
As Jake walked away, Jay sighed out of frustration. Quickly grabbing his stuff, and your forgotten water bottle on the end of the table, he made his way to the direction you had run off to, in hope he could catch up to you. When he realized it was too late, he silently cursed at himself for not being quick enough.
Jake's POV
Jake knew that if Jay disagreed with him, it meant he was in the wrong. Every-damn-time. It didnât matter what the point was, he was always right. And that bothered him to another level. How come his best friend knows his ex-girlfriend more than himself? What does he say to make it all sound right?
That was the one thing Jake was always jealous about, and the worst thing was that you never noticed. He always knew you were kind, acceptable, understandable, basically every good thing in the world. It made sense you and Jay got along once before, but now? Sure, the three of you had met around the same time, it was always the three of you until Jake confessed to you, that was when Jay grew a little bit distant from you, out of respect to both of you, of course. But Jake always kept him close, he was like that little angel on his shoulder that always wandered around with him and told him what was right or wrong, the honest one.
Seeing him walk away from him and instead go to you definitely did something to him, made him realize maybe there was something he did, that was wrong in every way.
As he stepped into the campus with a sour expression on his face, Jake was hoping he didnât bump into any familiar faces, something about what had just happened had bothered him more than it shouldâve.
âJakey?â
Of course, the familiar face Jake was begging not to bump into at the moment, had spawned out of nowhere.
Mentally, he had cursed himself. Physically, shivers dropped down his spine, making his lips slightly twitch.
âOh my gosh, Jakey!â Nari jumped into his arms, basically crawling on him as if he were to run away. Which in this case, thatâs what he wanted to do. âHow are you, baby?â She pouted, leaning over for a kiss to which he rejected.
âIâm not in the mood.â He groaned.
Nari stopped her tracks, pulling Jake with him. âWell, maybe this will cheer you up.â She giggled. That damn giggle that made Jake want to cut his ear off. âYou wonât believe who I just sawâŠâ she paused for suspense, making him stare at her blankly. âY/n! Oh gosh, she was crying and her face was all puffy, you shouldâve seen herââ
ââcan you stop?â
Nari immediately obeyed, zipping her lips but giving him a sour look as she dropped her hands that were mimicking how you looked.
âSeriously. I get you donât like her but all youâve talked about since she came back is ây/n this,â ây/n that,â why are you so interested in her life? She didnât even do anything to you.â He snapped.
The girl scoffed a laugh. âYouâre such a hypocrite, you know that, right? I was just telling you she was crying, no need to be dramatic.â She smirked, thinking heâd crack a laugh.
âYeah, and how is that even funny? Why would you make fun of someone whoâs crying in a public space when you donât even know if somethingâs happening in their life?â He stared at her disgustingly.
âjeez, Jake. I was just joking.â She looked around, hoping no one would be looking at them. âYou used to play along with this stuff.â
âAnd I regret it.â He rolled his eyes. âY/n is someone I care about. I donât like how youâre treating her. And by the way, why did you lie about her threatening you on twitter? To get my attention or something?â
âShe was threatening me. Still is, actually.â She shook her head.
âThen show me.â He held his palm up, âgive me your phone and show me where sheâs threatening you.â
Nari glared down at his hand, scoffing, clearly offended. âIâm not giving you my phone, Jake. What the fuck?â
âNari, Y/n would never do something like that. I know her.â He stated.
âSheâs your ex-girlfriend.â
âExactly. And I know the type of person she is. Also, why would you even go through my phone and steal pictures of a memory you werenât even there to begin with?â He asked, now completely serious.
The shorter girl gulped, then scoffed a laugh. âWhat, your bat shit crazy ex got offended by that? It was just a silly joke, get over it.â She rolled her eyes.
âDonât call her that. That was a memory of her and I, not you and I, or someone else.â His eyes suddenly started teared up, to which he quickly wiped away in frustration. âLook, whatever you and I have, I donât want it anymore. I want no contact. If you try to contact me or Y/n, or any of my friends, I swear Iâll sue you, got it?â He pointed his index finger at her.
âJake, you canât just say thatââ She tried to talk.
âI just did. And I mean it.â
And with that, Jake walked away, leaving a very furious Kim Nari.
Jake didnât know what suddenly changed, it just clicked. He still didnât know fully why you and him ended in bad terms, but now, what he wanted to find out was what he did to hurt you, and how to fix it. Because now, Jake was willing to accept what he did, even if he still didnât know what it was, but he knew heâd do anything to open that window.
