An Analysis on the themes of Sailor Moon
[And how it could have been better implemented]
As I see it there are four overarching themes that comprises sailor moon's narrative,
The primary theme Growing Into Womanhood and the secondary themes of the Confict between Duty and Desire,Motherhood and Forgiveness
Each arc focuses on one core theme that Usagi and the Sailor Guardians struggle with.[I wont be adressing Usagi much in this as she is one of the most developt charecters]
Growing Into Womanhood, This is the core theme of all of the Sailor Moon Adaptations. But is mainly prevalent into the first arc and last two arcs of majority of the manga/90s anime/Crystal/musicals, and takes centre stage in the live action PGSM
Takauchi mainly pushes this devlopment into Usagi and Chibiusa but some times other guardians get to take centre stage.
In the first arc of the story [most of] the guardians are fledglings awakening to their powers and are developing and maturing as people together.
Actually this arc is the one have the least qualms about as PGSM solved [most of] the problems i had with this arc and i will be using PGSM in general point to most of the best charecter work done in the franchise, however it still have my grips with its conclusions, for the inner senshi.
1.Ami Mizuno:The Guardian in Retrograde
Out of all of the inner senshi Ami is the most fleshed out and with good reason she is the first Senshi who Usagi meets and awakens, naturally she is the closest senshi to both the audience's and Usagi's heart. She's the one that is always there for Usagi and wants what's best for her and is the least cruel to her in the 90s adaptation, PGSM and the 90s anime uses Ami to her full potential shes the one that gets the most fleshed out plots and stories and is also the one that struggles the most between Duty and Desire and in the event that she must choose she puts Desire first, in the 90s anime, this inadvertently created a sort of dark horse complex which PGSM utalized to its potential by pulling the trigger and making her an antagonist force in the form of Dark Mercury, Ami is selfishly selfless and I wish that part of her moral delima was taken advantage by the villians more often.
MAKE HER THE DARK HORSE MAKE HER STRUGGLE WITH THIS MAKE HER THE SENSHI THAT CHOSSES TO REBEL AGAINST THE NOTION THAT THE GUARDIANS HAVE TO SERVE USAGI AS THEIR GOD QUEEN FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES AND LET HER SUCCEED.
11.Minako Aino: The Star outshone by Moonlight
Oh Mina, poor tragic Mina, it was simply her fate to sit and be outshone by someone livier, someone brighter. And out of the Senshi her charecter was utterly wrecked watered down to Usagi II if she didn't have her signature bow who could really tell the difference. PGSM improves her character as well by sorta recycling the confict between the inner and outer senshi to Minako and it makes sense after shes the one thats been doing this way way longer than them shes the leader and I for one think that she shouldn't accept Usagi's word for things her decisions even if they are wise. Mina is the leader not Usagi so the Princess should just sit back and relax nothings gonna happen not when Minako's no Venus is on the job. If Ami is the Senshi with the most resistance to fate Minako is resigned to it. She will never be happy as an idol, she will never be happy and in love she will never be a teenage girl. She will always be Venus.
If Ami is the dark horse Minako's the white knight. If Ami is passive Minako's aggressive. If Ami is the shrouded dark, Minako's the blinding light
