I've been seeing that quote go around and while making this I think I managed to track it back to "An Oresteia" by Anne Carson

Soulmate AU where a character chooses someone who isn’t their soulmate again and again and again and again.

There’s no inherent sign that they are “perfect/fated to be together”, but they love each other. They’ll work to keep it going. Even if they have to bind that red string themself, match their own marks. Even if there’s no indicator or chime that this is it.

It might be easier to be with their soulmate but they are committed to this person. I just like the idea of “I choose you over the person I’m destined to be with” / “We make our own fate”.
