Unfortunately, his debts with the mafia finally caught up to him…He woke up later in an abandoned warehouse unaware of his newly deceased state.

You can imagine Natsumi’s surprise upon seeing him attending Hope’s Peak.

To answer the first part, I made him a banshee because 1.) Banshee are known for predicting things (death, usually), and our boy is a clairvoyant, and 2.) the idea of a ghost who doesn’t know their a ghost is funny to me and he’s the only one dumb enough to be a candidate

this is so self-indulgent, but i just! i think! they’d be friends! i have so many headcanons revolving around these two doofuses, ranging from fluffy to angsty.

i hinted at it yesterday so now i'm making the post. i want to talk about prevalent "past and future" motifs used in mondo's character writing. GOD LETS HOPE I CAN WORD THIS WELL

i'm going to go into it, but long story short: mondo is a character who holds a lot of fear and grief in his past, but also comfort, because he is even more terrified of his future, if he even sees one for himself.

we know mondo's relationship with his past, i covered it in my post yesterday. he's haunted by it. there's very clear ptsd-coding involved in his writing (how well that ptsd is represented is a whole other can of worms), which means his past (namely, the accident involving daiya) is so integral to his character and what he does throughout the course of his time in the game. the only things we ever know about his past are directly related to daiya and the gang. he don't know shit about his life before that, other than his parents weren't in the picture and daiya was the only family he had. (fun fact: that line about mondo's mom was added in the localization of the game for no reason other than to make a joke. his mother was never mentioned in the original japanese, meaning we know NOTHING about mondo's parents). as far as mondo lets on, his life truly began once daiya started the gang. that's all his past is. it's all it revolves around. daiya started the gang, mondo joins the gang, mondo climbs the ranks, mondo becomes leader, daiya dies during his retirement party, mondo expands the gang to be bigger and better than it ever was under daiya.

(we have two minor exceptions. chuck, which still has that sense of grief that can be related to daiya. and mondo's ((lack of)) experience with girls, which can still be related to the machismo demanded of him by the gang and daiya).

the big thing is the accident and daiya's death. that, reasonably, had such an impact on mondo's life after that daiya is haunting mondo's narrative. the way mondo holds himself, the way he speaks, the way he gets dressed in the morning, the way he lashes out. its all because he's either trying to replicate daiya or he's responding out of fear that his secret involving daiya will be exposed. there's that theory that mondo changed the crazy diamond uniform from white to black to better hide blood stains after the crash and, while just a theory, i find that so compelling and it adds another layer of mondo making decisions influenced by his past. even his secret directly relates to his past, contrasting both chihiro and toko's secrets, which were currently taking place in the present. his constant focus on his past is what causes him to kill chihiro. it's what ruins his chances at a future.

a future that he was so fucking scared of that he chose to constantly focus on the past.

did you know that mondo's ultimate, what DEFINES him, has a time limit? yeah sure, so do others'. you can't exactly be a pro baseball player or a jpop idol for very long. but mondo maybe had like. a year, if even that. to still be a bosozoku after graduation before he had to move on. bosozoku culture is, by nature, only meant for youths. you can't be one when you're an adult. in fact, if you're still in a bosozoku gang at like, 19 or 20, you will lose a lot of the respect of your peers and subordinates. even if you're super well-regarded, like daiya or mondo. and mondo, being the ultimate bosozoku, knew this. he knew he only had a few more years in the crazy diamonds before he had to pass down his leadership and "join the real world." and he's so scared of what the real world holds for him. because, if you remember, his time in the gang is what he defines his entire being by. his life began when he joined that gang, so does that mean it'll end when he leaves it?

that's why his final fte focuses on how scared he is of growing up. adults aren't in gangs. they work real jobs, pay taxes,

are held accountable for their past actions...

plus, he feels so beholden to that promise he made to daiya, that doing anything outside of that feels like a waste to him, like he's failing his older brother.

and it's so sad to see how much he feels weighed down by his past because he does have a secret dream career. despite his fear of the future, he finds a single spark of hope in it. that spark being his silent wish of being a carpenter. something quiet and and meticulous, but still rewarding. so different from his past. because mondo WANTS to change, he WANTS to grow, he WANTS to succeed. but he doesn't let himself. because the fear of letting daiya down, of being found out, overpower those wants for himself. he already took daiya's future, why should he even consider one for himself?

but hope's peak changes him. being outside of the gang changes him. talking to other people changes him. they give him the hope needed to see a future for himself. one that doesn't involve failure or guilt or isolation.

but still, it wasn't enough to save him. because, at the end of the day, he couldn't let go of the past and move on. his overwhelming desire to emulate daiya, to honor daiya more than he does himself, because he sees nothing good himself, ultimately causes his life to end like daiya's: tragically young and on the back of a motorcycle.

getting away from the sad stuff: i truly do think that this is the reason why dr:s did not fumble his writing like it does other characters. because dr:s feel like it's supposed to be a game about the future and planning on what to do after high school. mondo has already left the gang by the time dr:s starts, so he has nothing to do but reminisce on his time at hope's peak while also focusing on his future for once. and it's so lovely, the direction it goes in. from him over enthusiastically promising to build everyone houses because he is so giddy that he finally sees a future for himself, to his interactions with the woh focusing on his desire to be seen as a safe and reliable adult to children since he's fully accepted that he himself is growing up, to addressing his fear of potentially losing all the progress he's made on himself in the future but trusting that his friends (like kiyotaka, the one he was talking to in this specific interaction) will always be there to help him, fully breaking himself out of that need to deal with things on his own. like yeah, that's mondo if the tragedy never happened, and he was allowed his chance at a happy life. (i also love that his plans for his future are so much more domestic and peaceful, compared to his past and other characters' ambitions. bro just wants to be normal and comfortable, at the end of the day.)

but yeah. those are really my main thoughts on the matter. mondo owada analysis is like candy to me. he deserves all of the video essays ever. i hate him. blegh.

yasuhiro and kiyotaka step-brothers headcanon infected my brain so bad that it has now affected the way i view canon material. mainly how chapter 3 (and the way kiyotaka is handled in it) could've been so much better had the writers treated yasuhiro with the respect needed to go through a proper character arc.

like. when you think about it, chapter 3 gave the writers the PERFECT opportunity to explore and develop hiro's character in a way that cements his place in the surviving cast, the same way chapter 4 did with aoi. so it's extremely frustrating that they didn't take that opportunity in favor of their extremely pathetic journey to flanderize yasuhiro as much as possible in the span of 3 chapters. i bring kiyotaka into this because you can also give kiyotaka a much better send-off through yasuhiro.

here's how it plays out in my head (god let's hope i explain this well):

the popular fanon that yasuhiro was looking out for taka in his catatonic state does play out here. seeing the normally energetic and smiling kiyotaka all the sudden silent, blank and defeated stirs something within yasuhiro. something compels him to look after kiyotaka (could have something to do with those suppressed memories of their 2 years spent together). he hovers around him a lot, making sure he eats and isn't by himself in such a vulnerable state. he tries to get him to talk, but kiyotaka never says anything. yasuhiro has no trouble filling the silence with one-sided conversations, but that concern never goes away. a silent kiyotaka is a broken kiyotaka.

what really gets on his nerves is how little the others seem to be helping him. this is where yasuhiro's tendency to be more emotionally driven than logically driven really stands out here. some of the others see kiyotaka as a lost cause, a murder victim waiting to happen. it's better to just detach themselves now and focus on how to save the rest of them. the discovery of alter ego makes that an easy task.

what i think would be really fun is if it's revealed that yasuhiro was the one that told kiyotaka about alter ego. because, if you can recall, kiyotaka was left out of the original encounter everyone had with alter ego at the beginning of the chapter, but he somehow found out about it and went to makoto to ask more. what if yasuhiro, who had already been trying and failing to get kiyotaka to engage with him for the past few days, tells him about alter ego to get some sort of reaction out of him. maybe he brings up that they look just like chihiro, and that talking to the program can bring kiyotaka some sort of closure for the events of the last chapter.

it's what finally gets kiyotaka to speak to him. he asks to go, to please speak to chihiro (not calling them alter ego, which yasuhiro decides to ignore). yasuhiro tells him they can, but it's night time already. they can't go breaking the rules they established, so they'll go after breakfast the next day.

his first mistake was bringing up alter ego to taka in the first place. his second mistake was leaving kiyotaka to sleep by himself in his own room that night. while yasuhiro is asleep, kiyotaka is restless. he can't let another moment go by knowing chihiro is there and that he can apologize for everything that happened. so, he goes to the one person he knows will cave and take him to chihiro: makoto. that scene plays out exactly how it does in the game, ending with ishida and everything.

when yasuhiro sees kiyotaka as ishida, he feels torn. on one hand, kiyotaka is not okay. he's acting unlike himself, and is clearly erratic and still struggling. on the other, he's talking and emoting and eating. maybe they can make better progress this way. he still hovers around, but this time, kiyotaka can call him out on it and actively avoid him, which makes trying to keep him safe all the more difficult.

there are moments, though, where the real kiyotaka comes out. where he stops pretending to be ishida and just faces the reality he's in for a few minutes before snapping back. yasuhiro, being the only one to actively spend time with him, is the only one to witness these moments. he sees that kiyotaka is not a lost cause, that there's still hope for him.

then celeste's plan gets carried out.

what if, instead of a random anonymous note, yasuhiro gets a note that night that was forged to look like kiyotaka wrote it? it feels vulnerable, and yasuhiro gets the sense that kiyotaka needs someone to be there for him before he does something stupid, so he lets all suspicions go and goes to the meeting place. what's waiting for him there isn't a kiyotaka who's ready to open up, ready to talk, but celeste and hifumi with the robo justice suit and a rag with chloroform.

when yasuhiro is broken out of the locker and taken out of the suit, kiyotaka is dead. not only does he have to deal with the reality of the boy he's been looking out for so much having died, but he has to deal with the fact that he's been blamed for it. he's wearing the same suit that the suspected perpetrator was wearing, he was no where to be found during the discovery of both taka and hifumi's deaths, and it's even brought up that yasuhiro spending more time with kiyotaka could've been in favor of finding a good time to kill him. the motive checks out too. yasuhiro is very open about much debt he's in, so of course he would kill someone for a boatload of cash.

what if hiro doesn’t get a moment to properly grieve taka because everyone is so suspicious of him that they keep him from interacting with the corpses?? and when the get back from the trial, taka is gone??

the consequences of taka's death and how yasuhiro deals with it is something i feel carries over into chapter 4. it might play into his reaction to sakura being the traitor and working with the mastermind, instead of his actions being fueled solely by cowardice.

his big "arc" that he goes through in the canon game (if you can even call it that because it's just a line he says at the end to sort of give off the impression that he learned something) is that he learned to trust his gut more and try to be more rational instead of solely relying on his future-telling abilities. what if that's something he learns from kiyotaka?? a character who moves head first into things and fights until the bitter end if it means he gets closer to a goal he believes is worth fighting for. a man who's emotions empowered him to move forward instead of kept him back out of a fear of the unknown. a man who wanted to help others instead of only looking for his own self-interest. idk i think someone like that could help a character who was established as lazy and selfish at the beginning of the story go through some major changes. do you think yasuhiro (and the other survivors) could help rebuild the world into the society kiyotaka thought was possible? one that rewarded hard work instead of natural talent and status?

idk this is just me putting out some ideas i had. this is very kiyotaka-focused, but there's still more that can go into a better-written yasuhiro when it comes to chapter three. i didn't even touch all of the potential parallels between him and celeste (which would of course come in to play). i just like kiyotaka and yasuhiro a lot so i focused it mostly on that aspect of it.

guh. yasuhiro might've passed kiyotaka as "most wasted thh character" in my head. if mostly because of the AMOUNT OF TIME they had to flesh him out only to do nothing. when i feel he had so much potential to be so much more than what was done.

Would he be more resistant to the narrative that ‘they all need to look out for one another and have hope!’ now? Would he be bitter? Less trusting?

that’s kinda what i was hinting at when it came to the fallout of chapter 3 carrying on to chapter 4. yasuhiro is essentially going through what taka went through in chapter 3, but instead of shock and silence, it’s malice and bitterness. he’s fucking angry. angry that no one else looked after taka with him. angry that someone would kill such a vulnerable person. angry that someone framed him for it. angry that everyone else accepted that framing so easily.

yasuhiro is a character who’s strong emotions are very much used for comedic moments (something he shares with taka, actually), but let’s use it for something beyond that! let’s use it for drama, to build tension. you’ve explored his fear and his joy. so explore his anger. it’s another way you can illustrate just how much this killing game is breaking people. what if the comedic relief character just wasn’t up to it anymore? because, for just a brief moment, he despises you?

the only reason why i don’t delve too deep into that aspect of it is because. how do we get him from that to joining the group and voting hope in chapter 6? chapter 4 can do a lot of the heavy lifting seeing that aoi goes through a lot of the same turmoil. but other than that, how do we get the yasuhiro we know and love back?

i guess you can lean into the fact that makoto and kyoko fight for hiro’s innocence in chapter 3. just don’t have it be because yasuhiro’s too stupid to carry it out and instead have it be a mixture of the evidence not adding up and knowing deep down that yasuhiro would never do something like that. especially to kiyotaka. have it be a real connection moment between yasuhiro and makoto. especially because, hey, makoto was framed for the murder of someone he was trying to protect as well back in chapter 1. maybe the can bond over that. and have hiro’s anger more directed at the rest of the cast, like byakuya, toko and aoi. it’s an easier point to start from.

especially because. i do want part of his arc to be helping out the group more and putting himself out their as someone to rely on instead of only looking out for himself. but it feels like everyone needs to earn that sort of respect from him for that to happen.
